    A story environment for learning object annotation and collection : a thesis presented in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Science in Computer Science at Massey University, Palmerston North, New Zealand

    With the increase in computer power, network bandwidth and availability, e-learning is used more and more widely. In practice e-learning can be applied in a variety of ways, such as providing electronic resources to support teaching and learning, developing computer based tutoring programs or building computer supported collaborative learning environments. Nowadays e-learning becomes significantly important because it can improve the quality of learning through using interactive computers, online communications and information systems in ways that other teaching methods cannot achieve. The important advantage of e-learning is that it offers learners a large amount of sharable and reusable learning resources. The current approaches such as Internet search and learning object repository does not effectively help users to search for appropriate learning objects. The original story concept introduces a new semantic layer between collections of learning objects and learning material. The basic idea of the story concept is to add an interpretative, semantically rich layer, informally called 'Story' between learning objects and learning material that links learning objects according to specific themes and subjects (Heinrich & Andres, 2003a). One motivation behind this approach is to put a more focused, semantic layer on top of untargeted metadata that are commonly used to describe a single learning object. Speaking from an e-learning context the stories build on learning objects and become information resources for learning material. The overall aim of this project was to design and build a story environment to realize the above story concept. The development of the story environment includes story metadata, story environment components, the story browsing and authoring processes, and tools involved in story browsing and authoring. The story concept suggests different types of metadata should be used in a story. This project developed those different metadata specifications to support story environment. Two prototypes of tools have been designed and implemented in this project to allow users to evaluate the story concept and story environment. The story browser helps story readers to read the story narrative and look at a story from different perspectives. The story authoring tool is used by the story authors to author a story. The future work of this project has been identified in the area of adding features of current tools, user testing and further implementation of the story environment

    Knowledge sharing is common place online nowadays. Drawing from trust literature, we find trust mechanism behind knowledge sharing behavior may lead to useful implications. However, there exists a gap between theoretical and managerial perspective on the role of trust especially in online knowledge transfer. This study will try to study how technological and community factors influence trust formation and lead to knowledge sharing behaviors in online virtual communities. By exploring how extrinsic drivers affect trust elements, we combine practical technology and community design issues with theoretical trust foundations.     Recent progress in understanding the interaction between ENSO and the East Asian winter monsoon: A review

    This paper reviews recent advances in understanding the interaction between the East Asian winter monsoon (EAWM) and El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO). The achievements are summarized into two aspects: 1) the impacts of ENSO on the EAWM, and 2) effects of the EAWM on ENSO. For the first aspect, the results show that: the current climate model simulations of ENSO impacts on the EAWM have a common weaker bias than in the observations; The influence of central Pacific type ENSO on the EAWM is generally weaker than that of the eastern Pacific type ENSO; The precipitation anomalies in the tropical Indian Ocean tend to contribute to the intra-seasonal transition of ENSO teleconnection over East Asia; The ENSO-EAWM relationship is unstable and subject to non-linear modulation by the state of oceans and extratropical atmospheric phenomena, which include the Pacific Decadal Oscillation and the Arctic Oscillation. Regarding the second aspect, studies have shown that the “pure” EAWM (denoted as EAWMres), which is independent of the ENSO signal, can lead to significant variations in the tropical convection over the western Pacific, the local Hadley circulation over East Asia, and the Walker circulation over the equatorial latitudes; The CMIP6 models can preproduce the above EAWMres effects well, although with some weaker bias. The changes in tropical convection and extratropical zonal flow associated with the EAWMres tend to have a significant modulating effect on the ENSO atmospheric teleconnection over North America. A strong EAWM and a strong Australian summer monsoon coherently provide favorable conditions for the onset of El Niño

    Supply Chain Finance and Financing Constraints on SMEs—An Empirical Analysis of Software Company

    With the perspective of small and medium-sized enterprises in China, it has trouble getting financing. Based on cash - cash flow sensitivity model, this paper figures out the existence of financial constraints on SMEs in software industry and supply chain finance’s effect on it. The cash flow sensitivity of cash and supply chain finance’s effectiveness are evaluated using a large sample of listed companies on the SME boardfrom2008 to 2018. Through empirical analysis and robustness checks, it is concluded that SMEs in software industry have financing difficulties and supply chain finance can alleviate this financial dilemma to some extent. Furthermore, the essay analyzes risk points of three different forms of supply chain finance and puts forward some suggestions about risk management for small and medium-sized enterprises, bank and third-party logistics

    Research on Image Retrieval Optimization Based on Eye Movement Experiment Data

    Satisfying a user's actual underlying needs in the image retrieval process is a difficult challenge facing image retrieval technology. The aim of this study is to improve the performance of a retrieval system and provide users with optimized search results using the feedback of eye movement. We analyzed the eye movement signals of the user’s image retrieval process from cognitive and mathematical perspectives. Data collected for 25 designers in eye tracking experiments were used to train and evaluate the model. In statistical analysis, eight eye movement features were statistically significantly different between selected and unselected groups of images (p < 0.05). An optimal selection of input features resulted in overall accuracy of the support vector machine prediction model of 87.16%. Judging the user’s requirements in the image retrieval process through eye movement behaviors was shown to be effective

    A Meta-Study on E-Collaboration

    Collaborative activities across organizations are common when conducting business online. There have been numerous research results on different aspects of inter-organization collaborations through electronic means or in an electronic environment. However, the term ‘collaboration’ in Information Systems research literature often has different meanings. Also, a wide spectrum of technologies has been labeled as collaborative technology. In order to make the knowledge of the new research field cohesive and accumulative, the paradigm of electronic collaboration (e-Collaboration) has yet to be established. Thus this paper aims to provide a framework for e-Collaboration from the perspective different levels of involvements of inter-organization interactions. The framework differentiates the types of the ‘collaboration’ in a cohesive manner, and underlines the core characteristics of e-Collaboration - joint intellectual efforts. Moreover, a content analysis on the existing related literatures is conducted, using the framework proposed. Future research directions in the field are also discussed

    Design of a rotary reactor for chemical-looping combustion. Part 1: Fundamentals and design methodology

    Chemical-looping combustion (CLC) is a novel and promising option for several applications including carbon capture (CC), fuel reforming, H2 generation, etc. Previous studies demonstrated the feasibility of performing CLC in a novel rotary design with micro-channel structures. In the reactor, a solid wheel rotates between the fuel and air streams at the reactor inlet, and depleted air and product streams at exit. The rotary wheel consists of a large number of micro-channels with oxygen carriers (OC) coated on the inner surface of the channel walls. In the CC application, the OC oxidizes the fuel while the channel is in the fuel zone to generate undiluted CO2, and is regenerated while the channel is in the air zone. In this two-part series, the effect of the reactor design parameters is evaluated and its performance with different OCs is compared. In Part 1, the design objectives and criteria are specified and the key parameters controlling the reactor performance are identified. The fundamental effects of the OC characteristics, the design parameters, and the operating conditions are studied. The design procedures are presented on the basis of the relative importance of each parameter, enabling a systematic methodology of selecting the design parameters and the operating conditions with different OCs. Part 2 presents the application of the methodology to the designs with the three commonly used OCs, i.e., nickel, copper, and iron, and compares the simulated performances of the designs
