A comparative study of time-marching schemes for fluid-structure interactions

    Get PDF
Four types of partitioned time-marching schemes, namely the iterative staggered serial (ISS) scheme, the conventional serial staggered serial (CSS) scheme, the generalized serial staggered scheme (GSS), and the serial staggered scheme with fluid loads predictions (FPSS), are presented for accuracy comparisons of nonlinear fluid-structure interactions (FSI). A 2-DOF aeroelastic model for an airfoil is used as an example to illustrate the effects of different control parameters of the schemes. Some modifications are made to the schemes to improve the FSI simulation accuracy. The numerical results show that the GSS and FPSS are accurate and robust if the default parameters are adopted. Moreover, the accuracy of FPSS can be further improved by simply tuning the control parameters

A latent profile analysis of sleep disturbance in relation to mental health among college students in China

AimsThis study aimed to examine the subtype classification characteristics of sleep disturbance (SD) in college students and their associations with sample characteristic factors and mental health outcomes.MethodsThe sample comprised 4,302 college students (Mean age = 19.92 ± 1.42 years, 58.6% females). The Youth Self-Rating Insomnia Scale, Beck Depression Inventory, 8-item Positive Subscale of the Community Assessment of Psychic Experiences, and 10-item Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale were used to assess adolescents’ sleep disturbance, depressive symptoms, psychotic-like experiences (PLEs), and resilience. Latent profile analysis, logistic regression, and liner regression analysis were used to analyze the data.ResultsThree subtypes of SD in college students were identified: the high SD profile (10.6%), the mild SD profile (37.5%), and the no SD profile (51.9%). Compared with college students in the “no SD” profile, risk factors for “high SD” include being male and poor parental marital status. Sophomores were found to predict the “high SD” profile or “mild SD” profile relative to the “no SD” profile. College students in the “mild SD” profile or “high SD” profile were more likely to have a higher level of depressive symptoms and PLEs, while a lower level of resilience.ConclusionThe findings highlighted that target intervention is urgently needed for male college students, sophomores, and those with poor parental marital status in the “mild SD” profile or “high SD” profile

Fluorescein-guided surgery for high-grade glioma resection: a five-year-long retrospective study at our institute

ObjectiveThis study investigates the extent of resection, duration of surgery, intraoperative blood loss, and postoperative complications in patients with high-grade glioma who received surgery with or without sodium fluorescein guidance.MethodsA single-center retrospective cohort study was conducted on 112 patients who visited our department and underwent surgery between July 2017 and June 2022, with 61 in the fluorescein group and 51 in the non-fluorescein group. Baseline characteristics, intraoperative blood loss, surgery duration, resection extent, and postoperative complications were documented.ResultsThe duration of surgery was significantly shorter in the fluorescein group than in the non-fluorescein group (P = 0.022), especially in patients with tumors in the occipital lobes (P = 0.013). More critically, the gross total resection (GTR) rate was significantly higher in the fluorescein group than in the non-fluorescein group (45.9% vs. 19.6%, P = 0.003). The postoperative residual tumor volume (PRTV) was also significantly lower in the fluorescein group than in the non-fluorescein group (0.40 [0.12-7.11] cm3 vs. 4.76 [0.44-11.00] cm3, P = 0.020). Particularly in patients with tumors located in the temporal and occipital lobes (temporal, GTR 47.1% vs. 8.3%, P = 0.026; PRTV 0.23 [0.12-8.97] cm3 vs. 8.35 [4.05-20.59] cm3, P = 0.027; occipital, GTR 75.0% vs. 0.0%, P = 0.005; PRTV 0.15 [0.13-1.50] cm3 vs. 6.58 [3.70-18.79] cm3, P = 0.005). However, the two groups had no significant difference in intraoperative blood loss (P = 0.407) or postoperative complications (P = 0.481).ConclusionsFluorescein-guided resection of high-grade gliomas using a special operating microscope is a feasible, safe, and convenient technique that significantly improves GTR rates and reduces postoperative residual tumor volume when compared to conventional white light surgery without fluorescein guidance. This technique is particularly advantageous for patients with tumors located in non-verbal, sensory, motor, and cognitive areas such as the temporal and occipital lobes, and does not increase the incidence of postoperative complications

Microbial community structure characteristics among different karst aquifer systems, and its potential role in modifying hydraulic properties of karst aquifers

    Get PDF
Little is known about how microbial activity affects the hydraulic properties of karst aquifers. To explore the potential impacts of microbial activity on the hydraulic properties of karst aquifers, microbiological analysis, heat tracer, isotope (dissolved inorganic carbon isotope, δ13CDIC) and aqueous geochemical analyses were conducted at six monitoring wells in Northern Guangdong Province, China. Greater hydraulic conductivity corresponded to a low temperature gradient to an extent; the temperature gradient in karst groundwater aquifers can reflect the degree of dissolution. Higher HCO3− concentrations coupled with lower d-excess and pH values at B2 and B6 reflect potential microbial activity (e.g., Sulfuricurvum kujiense) causing carbonate dissolution. Microbial activity or the input of anthropogenic acids, as evidenced by significantly more positive δ13CDIC values, potentially affect carbonate dissolution in deep karst aquifers, which eventually alters hydraulic properties of karst aquifer. However, more direct evidence is needed to quantify the effects of microbial activity on carbonate dissolution in karst aquifers
