Received Smith's letter of 29 August [1804]; will wait for payment for his translation [of Linnaeus' Lapland travel journal, for Smith's "Lachesis Lapponica"] until after Smith has heard from the booksellers. Sorry Smith has so much Latin left to translate. Defends his non-correction of the geographical words, having followed the same spelling as in the original, but offers to look over them before printing. [Smith has briefly annotated his repsonse on second folio:] White [publisher] will pay Troilius his translation fees but requests a little indulgence with the money

English translation of Linnaeus's autobiography

C. Troilius's translation for W. G. Maton's edition of Linnaeus's "Biography" in R. Pulteney's "A General View of the Writings of Linnaeus", 2nd edition, 1805, pp. 519-578. Maton completely restyled the English before printing. cf Soulsby 2640: 'The Swedish MSS. (...) was sent in 1770 by Linnaeus to Dr. C. F. Mennander, Archbishop of Uppsala, who commenced a translation into Latin. In 1779 Mr Fredenheim, son of the Archbishop, conveyed the Diary and other MSS. to Robert Gordon, of Cadiz, to be printed in England. Mr Gordon died soon after, and the MSS. were sold by his executors to J. Mawman, the publisher of the second edition of Pulteney's "The General View etc." Paper watermarked 'E Hayes 1798' throughout
