Dewey Hodgesās Research in Structural Dynamics, Aeroelasticity, and Composites: A Personal Perspective
The contributions of Dewey Hodges within the specialized areas of structural dynamics, aeroelasticity, and composites are highlighted in this paper. Dewey Hodges has published 215 journal papers and 170 conference papers covering a wide range of topics in aerospace structures. His research and academic career span nearly five decades and it is difficult, if not impossible, to give a detailed commentary on his colossal achievement in the confines of a single paper. It is widely acknowledged that Dewey Hodgesās research record is no less than incredible. He has not only given an exceptional account of himself but has also demonstrated his extraordinary versatility in research. The author of this paper has known him both personally and professionally for nearly three decades and, with great humility, he acknowledges the enormous benefit he has received from his association with him. Given the huge volume of work Dewey Hodges has produced and the enormity of the task of commenting on it, the author has understandably been highly selective in choosing which contributions to discuss
Inflight proton activation and damage on a CdTe detection plane
Future high-energy space telescope missions require further analysis of orbital environment induced activation and radiation damage on main instruments. A scientific satellite is exposed to the charged particles harsh environment, mainly geomagnetically trapped protons (up to ā¼300 MeV) that interact with the payload materials, generating nuclear activation background noise within instruments' operational energy range and causing radiation damage in detector material. As a consequence, instruments' performances deteriorate during the mission time-frame. In order to optimize inflight operational performances of future CdTe high-energy telescope detection planes under orbital radiation environment, we measured and analyzed the effects generated by protons on CdTe ACRORAD detectors with 2.56 cm2 sensitive area and 2 mm thickness. To carry-out this study, several sets of measurements were performed under a ā¼14 MeV cyclotron proton beam. Nuclear activation radionuclides' identification was performed. Estimation of activation background generated by short-lived radioisotopes during one day was less than ā¼1.3 Ć10-5 counts cm-2 s-1 keV-1 up to 800 keV. A noticeable gamma-rays energy resolution degradation was registered (ā¼60% @ 122 keV, ā¼14% @ 511 and ā¼2.2% @ 1275 keV) after an accumulated proton fluence of 4.5 Ć1010 protons cm-2, equivalent to ā¼22 years in-orbit fluence. One year later, the energy resolution of the irradiated prototype showed a good level of performancerecovery

The Pandora multi-algorithm approach to automated pattern recognition of cosmic-ray muon and neutrino events in the MicroBooNE detector.
The development and operation of liquid-argon time-projection chambers for neutrino physics has created a need for new approaches to pattern recognition in order to fully exploit the imaging capabilities offered by this technology. Whereas the human brain can excel at identifying features in the recorded events, it is a significant challenge to develop an automated, algorithmic solution. The Pandora Software Development Kit provides functionality to aid the design and implementation of pattern-recognition algorithms. It promotes the use of a multi-algorithm approach to pattern recognition, in which individual algorithms each address a specific task in a particular topology. Many tens of algorithms then carefully build up a picture of the event and, together, provide a robust automated pattern-recognition solution. This paper describes details of the chain of over one hundred Pandora algorithms and tools used to reconstruct cosmic-ray muon and neutrino events in the MicroBooNE detector. Metrics that assess the current pattern-recognition performance are presented for simulated MicroBooNE events, using a selection of final-state event topologies
The MrCYP52 Cytochrome P450 Monoxygenase Gene of Metarhizium robertsii Is Important for Utilizing Insect Epicuticular Hydrocarbons
Fungal pathogens of plants and insects infect their hosts by direct penetration of the cuticle. Plant and insect cuticles are covered by a hydrocarbon-rich waxy outer layer that represents the first barrier against infection. However, the fungal genes that underlie insect waxy layer degradation have received little attention. Here we characterize the single cytochrome P450 monoxygenase family 52 (MrCYP52) gene of the insect pathogen Metarhizium robertsii, and demonstrate that it encodes an enzyme required for efficient utilization of host hydrocarbons. Expressing a green florescent protein gene under control of the MrCYP52 promoter confirmed that MrCYP52 is up regulated on insect cuticle as well as by artificial media containing decane (C10), extracted cuticle hydrocarbons, and to a lesser extent long chain alkanes. Disrupting MrCYP52 resulted in reduced growth on epicuticular hydrocarbons and delayed developmental processes on insect cuticle, including germination and production of appressoria (infection structures). Extraction of alkanes from cuticle prevented induction of MrCYP52 and reduced growth. Insect bioassays against caterpillars (Galleria mellonella) confirmed that disruption of MrCYP52 significantly reduces virulence. However, MrCYP52 was dispensable for normal germination and appressorial formation in vitro when the fungus was supplied with nitrogenous nutrients. We conclude therefore that MrCYP52 mediates degradation of epicuticular hydrocarbons and these are an important nutrient source, but not a source of chemical signals that trigger infection processes
