A Convex Model for Edge-Histogram Specification with Applications to Edge-preserving Smoothing
The goal of edge-histogram specification is to find an image whose edge image
has a histogram that matches a given edge-histogram as much as possible.
Mignotte has proposed a non-convex model for the problem [M. Mignotte. An
energy-based model for the image edge-histogram specification problem. IEEE
Transactions on Image Processing, 21(1):379--386, 2012]. In his work, edge
magnitudes of an input image are first modified by histogram specification to
match the given edge-histogram. Then, a non-convex model is minimized to find
an output image whose edge-histogram matches the modified edge-histogram. The
non-convexity of the model hinders the computations and the inclusion of useful
constraints such as the dynamic range constraint. In this paper, instead of
considering edge magnitudes, we directly consider the image gradients and
propose a convex model based on them. Furthermore, we include additional
constraints in our model based on different applications. The convexity of our
model allows us to compute the output image efficiently using either
Alternating Direction Method of Multipliers or Fast Iterative
Shrinkage-Thresholding Algorithm. We consider several applications in
edge-preserving smoothing including image abstraction, edge extraction, details
exaggeration, and documents scan-through removal. Numerical results are given
to illustrate that our method successfully produces decent results efficiently
Fluctuations and universality in a catalysis model with long-range reactivity
The critical properties of the Ziff-Gulari-Barshad (ZGB) model with the
addition of long-range reactivity [C.H. Chan and P.A. Rikvold, Phys. Rev. E 91,
012103 (2015)] are further investigated. The scaling behaviors of the order
parameter, susceptibility, and correlation length provide addi- tional evidence
that the universality class of the ZGB system changes from the two-dimensional
Ising class to the mean-field class with the addition of even a weak long-range
reactivity mechanism
The motion of a deformable drop in a second-order fluid
The cross-stream migration of a deformable drop in a unidirectional shear flow of a second-order fluid is considered. Expressions for the particle velocity due to the separate effects of deformation and viscoelastic rheology are obtained. The direction and magnitude of migration are calculated for the particular cases of Poiseuille flow and simple shear flow and compared with experimental data
Arc-Length Continuation and Multigrid Techniques for Nonlinear Elliptic Eigenvalue Problems
We investigate multi-grid methods for solving linear systems arising from arc-length continuation techniques applied to nonlinear elliptic eigenvalue problems. We find that the usual multi-grid methods diverge in the neighborhood of singular points of the solution branches. As a result, the continuation method is unable to continue past a limit point in the Bratu problem. This divergence is analyzed and a modified multi-grid algorithm has been devised based on this analysis. In principle, this new multi-grid algorithm converges for elliptic systems, arbitrarily close to singularity and has been used successfully in conjunction with arc-length continuation procedures on the model problem. In the worst situation, both the storage and the computational work are only about a factor of two more than the unmodified multi-grid methods
