Testing the General Validity of the Heckscher-Ohlin Theorem: The Natural Experiment of Japan
We exploit Japan's 19th century opening up to trade to test a general formulation of the Heckscher-Ohlin theorem. This formulation is based on Ohlin's measure of factor scarcity where autarky factor prices impose a refutable prediction on the economy's factor content of trade. Our test combines factor price data in Japan's autarky period with commodity trade data and a technology matrix in Japan's early free trade period. Our technology matrix is derived from a major Japanese survey of agricultural techniques during the early Meiji period, accounts by European visitors and numerous studies by Japanese and western scholars that draw on village records, business accounts and other historical sources. Evaluating Japan's factor content of trade during 1868-1875 at the corresponding autarky factor prices, we fail to reject the Heckscher-Ohlin prediction in each sample year.

Renewable power for lean desktops in media applications
An integration of solar microgeneration to supply a low-power IT desktop, using the Power over Ethernet standards IEEE 802.3af/at as a low power distribution network avoiding transformer losses from DC generation to mains power AC and back to low-voltage DC and hence maximising efficiency. The resulting design points to applications in media technology where reducing grid power consumption is critical for improving sustainability, or where there are supply constraints, and indicates new directions in how we manage and consume power for IT devices
Testing the General Validity of the Heckscher-Ohlin Theorem: The Natural Experiment of Japan
We exploit Japan’s 19th century move from autarky to free trade to provide the first test of the general validity of the price formulation of the Heckscher-Ohlin theorem. In this formulation a country’s autarky factor price vector imposes a single refutable prediction on the economy’s factor content of trade. Our test combines factor price data from Japan’s late autarky period with Japan’s factor content of trade calculated with the technologies of the country of origin of traded goods. The direct and indirect input requirements are constructed from many historical sources, including a major Japanese survey of agricultural techniques and a rich set of 19th century comparative cost studies. Evaluating Japan’s factor content of trade during 1865-1876 at autarky factor prices, we fail to reject the Heckscher-Ohlin hypothesis in each sample year.testing the price version of Heckscher-Ohlin, the natural experiment of Japan
Chiral selection in the formation of borates from racemic binaphthols and related diols
A series of racemic or stereochemically labile chiral borate anions based on the 2,2′-biphenol motif was investigated. All borates were homochiral in the solid state, although in some cases the heterochiral diastereomers were computed to be thermodynamically preferred (DFT). The crystallographic preference for the homochiral diastereomer was attributed to its lower bulk, higher molecular symmetry, and the therewith associated better packing ability
The American Paradox
This podcasts looks at the American paradox of slavery in revolutionary America. The founding documents of the United States grant freedoms to the American people but restrict the freedoms of slaves. The emphasis of this podcast is to show that a free America was not entirely free
Pressure Dependence of Fragile-to-Strong Transition and a Possible Second Critical Point in Supercooled Confined Water
By confining water in nano-pores of silica glass, we can bypass the
crystallization and study the pressure effect on the dynamical behavior in
deeply supercooled state using neutron scattering. We observe a clear evidence
of a cusp-like fragile-to-strong (F-S) dynamic transition. Here we show that
the transition temperature decreases steadily with an increasing pressure,
until it intersects the homogenous nucleation temperature line of bulk water at
a pressure of 1600 bar. Above this pressure, it is no longer possible to
discern the characteristic feature of the F-S transition. Identification of
this end point with the possible second critical point is discussed.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figure
Energy Dependence of Scattering Ground State Polar Molecules
We explore the total cross section of ground state polar molecules in an
electric field at various energies, focusing on RbCs and RbK. An external
electric field polarizes the molecules and induces strong dipolar interactions
leading to non-zero partial waves contributing to the scattering even as the
collision energy goes to zero. This results in the need to compute scattering
problems with many different values of total M to converge the total cross
section. An accurate and efficient approximate total cross section is
introduced and used to study the low field temperature dependence. To
understand the scattering of the polar molecules we compare a semi-classical
cross section with quantum unitarity limit. This comparison leads to the
ability to characterize the scattering based on the value of the electric field
and the collision energy.Comment: Accepted PRA, 10 pages, 5 figure
