    Accelerating random walks by disorder

    We investigate the dynamic impact of heterogeneous environments on superdiffusive random walks known as L\'evy flights. We devote particular attention to the relative weight of source and target locations on the rates for spatial displacements of the random walk. Unlike ordinary random walks which are slowed down for all values of the relative weight of source and target, non-local superdiffusive processes show distinct regimes of attenuation and acceleration for increased source and target weight, respectively. Consequently, spatial inhomogeneities can facilitate the spread of superdiffusive processes, in contrast to common belief that external disorder generally slows down stochastic processes. Our results are based on a novel type of fractional Fokker-Planck equation which we investigate numerically and by perturbation theory for weak disorder.Comment: 8 pages, 5 figure

    Saturation from nuclear pion dynamics

    We construct an equation-of-state for nuclear matter based on the chiral Lagrangian. The relevant scales are discussed and an effective chiral power expansion scheme, which is constructed to work around the nuclear saturation density, is presented. A realistic equation-of-state is obtained by adjusting one free parameter, when the leading and subleading terms in the expansion are included. The saturation mechanism is due to correlations induced by the one-pion-exchange interaction. Furthermore, we find a substantial deviation from the Fermi-gas estimate of the quark condensate in nuclear matter already at the saturation density.Comment: revised version, with minor corrections, 13 pages, 3 Postscript figure

    Thematic mapper research in the earth sciences: Small scale patches of suspended matter and phytoplankton in the Elbe River Estuary, German Bight and Tidal Flats

    A Thematic Mapper (TM) field experiment was followed by a data analysis to determine TM capabilities for analysis of suspended matter and phytoplankton. Factor analysis showed that suspended matter concentration, atmospheric scattering, and sea surface temperature can be retrieved as independent factors which determine the variation in the TM data over water areas. Spectral channels in the near infrared open the possibility of determining the Angstrom exponent better than for the coastal zone color scanner. The suspended matter distribution may then be calculated by the absolute radiance of channel 2 or 3 or the ratio of both. There is no indication of whether separation of chlorophyll is possible. The distribution of suspended matter and sea surface temperature can be observed with the expected fine structure. A good correlation between water depth and suspended matter distribution as found from ship data can now be analyzed for an entire area by the synoptic view of the TM scenes

    Particle Dispersion on Rapidly Folding Random Hetero-Polymers

    We investigate the dynamics of a particle moving randomly along a disordered hetero-polymer subjected to rapid conformational changes which induce superdiffusive motion in chemical coordinates. We study the antagonistic interplay between the enhanced diffusion and the quenched disorder. The dispersion speed exhibits universal behavior independent of the folding statistics. On the other hand it is strongly affected by the structure of the disordered potential. The results may serve as a reference point for a number of translocation phenomena observed in biological cells, such as protein dynamics on DNA strands.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure

    Levy Flights in Inhomogeneous Media

    We investigate the impact of external periodic potentials on superdiffusive random walks known as Levy flights and show that even strongly superdiffusive transport is substantially affected by the external field. Unlike ordinary random walks, Levy flights are surprisingly sensitive to the shape of the potential while their asymptotic behavior ceases to depend on the Levy index μ\mu . Our analysis is based on a novel generalization of the Fokker-Planck equation suitable for systems in thermal equilibrium. Thus, the results presented are applicable to the large class of situations in which superdiffusion is caused by topological complexity, such as diffusion on folded polymers and scale-free networks.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure

    The author has identified the following significant results. Due to the receipt of ERTS-1 imagery, Bolivia will have for the first time a geomorphological map at a scale of 1:100,000. Now the researcher and the student will be able to compare the distribution of the existing shapes of the country, which have been modelled by diverse processes, factors, and agents. This geomorphological information will be very useful in its application to mining, especially alluvial beds, engineering work, and other geological studies. This map is divided into ten geomorphological units which coincide with the geostructural units of the western region of the country

    STEPS - an approach for human mobility modeling

    In this paper we introduce Spatio-TEmporal Parametric Stepping (STEPS) - a simple parametric mobility model which can cover a large spectrum of human mobility patterns. STEPS makes abstraction of spatio-temporal preferences in human mobility by using a power law to rule the nodes movement. Nodes in STEPS have preferential attachment to favorite locations where they spend most of their time. Via simulations, we show that STEPS is able, not only to express the peer to peer properties such as inter-ontact/contact time and to reflect accurately realistic routing performance, but also to express the structural properties of the underlying interaction graph such as small-world phenomenon.
