Using vegetation indices for the estimation and production of vegetation cover maps in the Jeffara Plain, Libya
Remote sensing data providesan important source for monitoring and mapping vegetation cover. Vegetation Indices (VI) are derived from multispectral satellite datafor use in monitoring vegetation distribution. This paper assesses the potential of SAVI (Soil-Adjusted Vegetation Index) and NDVI (Normalized Difference Vegetation Index), and uses these to demonstrate the production of plant coverpercentage maps in the Jeffara Plain, Libya,using spatial resolution remote sensing imagery in this semi-arid and arid region. A study region in the Jeffara Plain of 13,800ha was selected to permit processing of training and evaluation data due to the variety in irrigated agricultural area and natural vegetation cover densities. The area also provides a variety ofclimatic and soil conditions. A Landsat image was obtained on March 15, 2016, having a pixel resolution of 30 m over this area and used to compare both vegetation indices. Once obtained, a radiometric correction was applied to the image to produce reflectance and ground reflectance, mosaic, and subset. This data was thenclassified to produce a reference of vegetation cover. The values of each index were compared to the equivalent proportion of the area covered by vegetation. A virtual field study was undertakenusing Google Earth for accuracy assessment purposes. Results indicated that SAVI is best suited in this region, with SAVI resultsproviding an R2 of 0.88, whereas NDVIprovided an R2 of 0.86.Overall, SAVI is considered more appropriatefor use in this semi-arid area even though it requires atmospheric correction. The plant coverpercentagemap for the Jeffara Plain was obtained by determining the threshold values of the plant cover percentage using the SAVI index, validated using avisual assessment method based on the use of high resolution images (Digital Globe) from Google Earth
“It only hurts when I laugh”: Tolerating bullying humour in order to belong at work
Our study examines the impacts on workers when organisational humour is repeated, sustained, dominating, and potentially harmful, and thus can be considered to be bullying. In an ethnographic study of an idiosyncratic New Zealand IT company, we observed humour that was sexualised, dominating, and perpetrated by the most powerful organizational members. We argue that the compelling need for belonging in this extreme organizational culture influenced workers to accept bullying humour as just a joke and therefore acceptable and harmless even when it contravened societal workplace norms. Our contribution is in identifying and extending the significant theoretical relationship between workplace humour and bullying that, to date, is not well-explored in organizational researc

A review of potential methods for monitoring rangeland degradation in Libya
Natural and human factors exert a profound impact on the degradation of rangelands, human effects being the most significant factor in increasing the severity of deterioration. This occurs through agricultural expansion at the expense of rangelands, and with the number of domestic and wildlife animals exceeding the natural carrying capacity. This raises concerns about the ongoing sustainability of these land resources, as well as the sustainability of traditional pastoral land practices. Rangelands require effective management, which is dependent upon accurate and timely monitoring data to support the assessment of rangeland deterioration. Natural rangelands provide one of the significant pillars of support for the Libyan national economy. Despite the important role of rangeland in Libya from both economic and environmental perspectives, the vegetation cover of Libyan rangeland has changed adversely qualitatively and quantitatively over the past four decades.
Ground-based observation methods are widely used to assess rangeland degradation in Libya. However, multi-temporal observations are often not integrated nor repeatable, making it difficult for rangeland managers to detect degradation consistently. Field study costs are also significantly high in comparison with their accuracy and reliability, both in terms of the time and resources required. Remote-sensing approaches offer the advantage of spanning large geographical areas with multiple spatial, spectral and temporal resolutions. These data can play a significant role in rangeland monitoring, permitting observation, monitoring and prediction of vegetation changes, productivity assessment, fire extent, vegetation and soil moisture measurement and quantifying the proliferation of invasive plant species. This paper reviews the factors causing rangeland degradation in Libya, identifying appropriate remote-sensing methods that can be used to implement appropriate monitoring procedures
Integration of ecosystem services into a conceptual spatial planning framework based on a landscape ecology perspective
Context
The study of ecosystem services has extended its influence into spatial planning and landscape ecology, the integration of which can offer an opportunity to enhance the saliency, credibility, and legitimacy of landscape ecology in spatial planning issues.
Objectives
This paper presents a conceptual framework suitable for spatial planning in human dominated environments supported by landscape ecological thinking. It seeks to facilitate the integration of ecosystem services into current practice, including landscape metrics as suitable indicators.
Methods
A literature review supported the revision of existing open questions pertaining to ecosystem services as well as their integration into landscape ecology and spatial planning. A posterior reflection of the current state-of-the-art was then used as a basis for developing the spatial planning conceptual framework.
Results and conclusion
The framework is articulated around four phases (characterisation, assessment, design, and monitoring) and three concepts (character, service, and value). It advocates integration of public participation, consideration of “landscape services”, the inclusion of ecosystem disservices, and the use of landscape metrics for qualitative assessment of services. As a result, the framework looks to enhance spatial planning practice by providing: (i) a better consideration of landscape configuration in the supply of services (ii) the integration of anthropogenic services with ecosystem services; (iii) the consideration of costs derived from ecosystems (e.g. disservices); and (iv) an aid to the understanding of ecosystem services terminology for spatial planning professionals and decision makers
Evaluation of the pathogenicity and virulence of three strains of Salmonella organisms in calves and pigs
Objective—To assess in pigs the pathogenicity and virulence of 3 strains of Salmonella spp capable of causing atypical salmonellosis in cattle.
Animals—36 Holstein calves and 72 pigs experimentally infected with Salmonella spp
Procedures—Representative Salmonella strains associated with 3 new disease phenotypes (protozoa-mediated hypervirulence, multisystemic cytopathicity, and encephalopathy) that have been characterized in cattle during the past 10 years were orally inoculated into pigs. Clinical manifestations were compared with those observed in cattle. Samples were collected from various tissues, and the presence of Salmonella organisms was assessed qualitatively and quantitatively by use of Salmonella-selective media
Results—Of the 3 unique Salmonella disease phenotypes observed in cattle, only protozoa-mediated hypervirulence was observed in pigs. Hypervirulence was related to a more rapid onset of disease and higher pathogen burden in pigs than in cattle. This phenotype was observed in pigs inoculated with multiresistant Salmonella enterica serotypes Typhimurium or Choleraesuis bearing the Salmonella genomic island 1 (SGI1) integron.
Conclusions and Clinical Relevance—Salmonella hypervirulence was identified in pigs noculated with SGI1-bearing strains exposed to free-living protozoa. Additionally, an SGI1-bearing strain of Salmonella Choleraesuis was detected that resulted in augmented virulence in pigs. Therefore, it appeared that protozoa-associated salmonellosis was analogous in pigs and cattle. Salmonella-mediated encephalopathy and multisystemic cytopathicity did not appear to be relevant diseases in pigs
