Black Holes as Incompressible Fluids on the Sphere

    Get PDF
We consider finite deformations of the p+2-dimensional Schwarzschild geometry which obey the vacuum Einstein equation, preserve the mean curvature and induced conformal metric on a sphere a distance λ\lambda from the horizon and are regular on the future horizon. We show perturbatively that in the limit λ\lambda approaches 0 the deformations are given by solutions of the nonlinear incompressible Navier-Stokes equation on the p-sphere. This relation provides a link between global existence for p-dimensional incompressible Navier-Stokes fluids and a novel form of cosmic censorship in p+2-dimensional general relativity

The Employer Brand as a Symbolic Resource - Generation Y "consumption" of the Employer Brand

The postmodern western society has influenced the labour market, which is now said to become increasingly similar to the contemporary consumer market. Furthermore, a new generation, Generation Y, has emerged on the labour market and contributes to this development. The changing labour market has forced companies to find new ways to develop a strong employer brand in order to attract, motivate and retain competent employees. The strategy to accomplish this has during the last decades resulted in an entire research field, referred to as employer branding. Previous research on employer branding has to a large extent focused on the possible gains of the employer. This master thesis wishes to instead highlight the position and viewpoint of the employees and the possible advantages gained from the employer brand. By attempting to look upon employees as strategic ‘consumers’ of the employer brand, the authors wish to reach a deeper understanding of the outcomes of employer branding. In order to accomplish this, a qualitative case study at Siemens Sweden has been conducted, using semi-structured interviews. The results of the collected empirical data provided interesting but ambiguous answers. While identifying with the employer brand, the employees did not demonstrate ‘consumption’ of the employer brand as a symbolic resource in their identity creation. The reasons for why employees tended to identify with the employer brand while still being unwilling or unable to use it as a symbolic resource when creating their social identity were as follows: 1) the fact that work task and profession preceded the employer brand, 2) insufficient public familiarity with the employer brand and the impact of a construed external image, 3) the ‘value’ incorporated in economic compensation, 4) the employees lack of choice

    Cable-Dispensing Cart

A versatile cable-dispensing cart can support as many as a few dozen reels of cable, wire, and/or rope. The cart can be adjusted to accommodate reels of various diameters and widths, and can be expanded, contracted, or otherwise reconfigured by use of easily installable and removable parts that can be carried onboard. Among these parts are dispensing rods and a cable guide that enables dispensing of cables without affecting the direction of pull. Individual reels can be mounted on or removed from the cart without affecting the other reels: this feature facilitates the replacement or reuse of partially depleted reels, thereby helping to reduce waste. Multiple cables, wires, or ropes can be dispensed simultaneously. For maneuverability, the cart is mounted on three wheels. Once it has been positioned, the cart is supported by rubber mounts for stability and for prevention of sliding or rolling during dispensing operations. The stability and safety of the cart are enhanced by a low-center-of-gravity design. The cart can readily be disassembled into smaller units for storage or shipping, then reassembled in the desired configuration at a job site

Modeling microscopic swimmers at low Reynolds number

We employ three numerical methods to explore the motion of low Reynolds number swimmers, modeling the hydrodynamic interactions by means of the Oseen tensor approximation, lattice Boltzmann simulations and multiparticle collision dynamics. By applying the methods to a three bead linear swimmer, for which exact results are known, we are able to compare and assess the effectiveness of the different approaches. We then propose a new class of low Reynolds number swimmers, generalized three bead swimmers that can change both the length of their arms and the angle between them. Hence we suggest a design for a microstructure capable of moving in three dimensions. We discuss multiple bead, linear microstructures and show that they are highly efficient swimmers. We then turn to consider the swimming motion of elastic filaments. Using multiparticle collision dynamics we show that a driven filament behaves in a qualitatively similar way to the micron-scale swimming device recently demonstrated by Dreyfus et al.Comment: 12 pages, 10 figure

D-brane Construction of the 5D NHEK Dual

Extremal but non-supersymmetric charged black holes with SU(2)_L spin in IIB string theory compactified to five dimensions on K^3 x S^1 are considered. These have a near-horizon or NHEK region with an enhanced SL(2,R)_L conformal symmetry. It is shown that the NHEK geometry has a second, inequivalent, asymptotically flat extension in which the radius of the S^1 becomes infinite but the radius of the angular circles of SU(2)_L orbits approach a constant. The asymptotic charges associated to the second solution identify it as a 5D D1-D5-Taub-NUT black string with certain nonzero worldvolume charge densities, temperatures and chemical potentials. The dual of the NHEK geometry is then identified as an IR limit of this wrapped brane configuration.Comment: 11 page
