Situated Sound and Compositional Circumstance in My Recent Musical Practices
My recent compositional work consists of installed sound environments and pieces for performance by ensembles, soloists, and machines. Throughout my research period I have proposed musical and sonic art works as fields of and for phenomenological inquiry and reflection. From this perspective, my pieces become sites for enacting environmental encounters that unfold around listeners. These circumstances problematize the certainty of subject and object within aural and aesthetic experiences of sound situations. This commentary surveys material and thought processes in my recent compositional work and accompanies a portfolio of works from my research period to comprise my submission for partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy.
In the opening of this text to follow I review and contextualize key technical areas within my material and compositional processes of my portfolio work. Three main areas of research and their outcomes within specific pieces are considered in Chapter 1. First, a permutational and parametric technique for composing patterned musical material is discussed. Following this, I examine and contextualize sculptural approaches to temporality in recent works. Finally, I consider applications of indeterminacy at several structural levels within my recent pieces.
In Chapter 2, I discuss the conceptual development of my research and portfolio work, locating my own strands of inquiry and contributions to thought and practice within contemporary and historical practices in music and the sonic arts. I consider key sources of inspiration from visual art, perceptual psychology, and philosophy. Developing this, I demonstrate how phenomenological activity underlies, has developed within, or assists in my reflection upon the outcomes of my compositional and experimental strategies.
Chapter 3 offers further commentary on each piece within my portfolio submission. I then conclude with Chapter 4 by proposing further developments for my research and future compositional projects
A Radical New Interdisciplinary Space for Sonification
RADICAL is a new three-year project with the ambitious goal of developing a fundamental understanding of the relationship between sonification design and the listener and to stimulate a revitalised agenda for sonification research and practice. Understanding of the role of embodied perception, spatial considerations, and aesthetics in our listening to, and perception of, sonification remains limited. This interdisciplinary project draws together experts in computer science, sonification, listening and perception, ethnography, music composition, and aesthetics to derive a fundamentally new understanding from which to derive concrete guidelines for better and more successful sonification design. The act of listening involves embodied perception, that is, making sense of and responding to sound involves not just our ears but is shaped by aspects of our entire physical body as well as our interactions with the space in which listening takes place. We are conducting a comprehensive study of sonification making and listening to better understand the relationships between sonifications, their designers, and their listeners. From this we will develop a new theory of sonification listening and derive an aesthetics of sonification which, up till now, has no accepted definition. These outcomes will be important in formulating a new framework for successful sonification design.https://projectRadical.github.i
Listener-centred Sonification Practice as Transdisciplinary Experimental Artistic Engagement
Project RADICAL presents sonification research and practice as a listener-centred, transdisciplinary activity. In this chapter, authors discuss sonification from perspectives of artistic and musical practice. Particular emphasis is placed on spatial listening, embodied experience, environmental interaction, and communication, resulting in an interroga- tion of methodology, objects and foundations often assumed for sonifica- tion. The reader is invited to apply an ethnographic ear to a roundtable presentation investigating new sonic and musical practices that converge upon a reframing of sonification as engaged aesthetic activity productive of and carrying new technical and epistemic knowledge
Sonification of Solar Corona Data
For solar physicists, perceptualization of data is of vital interest; in current practice, this is almost exclusively approached by visual means. Project Radical (a sonification research initiative between Northumbria and Newcastle Universities) is building on an established collaboration with solar physicists to address key research questions:How does sonification complement observation and numerical representation, and how might solar physicists involve listening in their work? What new conceptual and technological approaches are suggested by the design constraints specific to solar physics? In addressing these questions, we are developing flexible tools for fluid integration within solar physics data analysis. Our project draws on research-through-design methodologies centred on interdisciplinary collaboration. Our working method consists in an iterative alternation between analytical sessions in which solar physicists, designers, and programmers meet in small groups, and prototyping periods during which new software is created and tested. This methodology assures that designs are tested during development, and that physicists have access to functional prototypes for experimental integration into their everyday workflow. While this addresses the specific aim of our project, a desired outcome is a sonification toolset that, while conceived within the domain of solar physics, demonstrates viability for wider scientific application and further development.https://projectRadical.github.i
Fluoroquinolones and tetracyclines as growth factors in aquaculture: Increase of biometrical parameters versus emergence of resistant bacteria and residues in meat
Antibiotics can be used as growth promoters for fishes in aquaculture. However, its use in animal production induced an increase in the emergence of resistant microorganisms. Piaractus mesopotamicus is the second most produced fish species in Argentina. The aim of this work was to evaluate the effect of the administration of subtherapeutic doses of oxytetracycline and enrofloxacin over biometrical parameters, the increase of resistant microorganisms in the intestinal microbiota and the presence of antibiotic residues in meat of P. mesopotamicus. 3 months old animals were fed twice a day for 120 days. Commercial balanced feed was added with either oxytetracycline (O), enrofloxacin (E) or water (C). Biometrical parameters, intestinal content (IC) and muscle samples were obtained every 30 days. IC samples were inoculated in plates with and without antibiotics while muscle samples were submitted to a microbiological method to find antibiotic residues. Treatment O maintained survival at 100%, increased mean weight and standard length and was not detected in muscle samples. However, it showed the highest increments in the number of resistant microorganisms. These results indicate that the use of subtherapeutic doses of oxytetracycline for prolonged periods induces increments in biometrical parameters leaving no residues in meat, but also promotes the development of resistant microorganisms when compared with the control group.
Survival rate is boosted significantly (p>0.05) with dead yeast and with no significance (p<0.05) with the live fungi. None of the treatments induce significant increments in mean weight (p<0.05). These results allow us to propose the treatment with dead yeast at 1% as a growing factor for R. quelen, considering this microorganism as an effective prebiotic to be used in the aquaculture of this fish specie.Fil: Guidoli, Marcos Gabriel.
