    Enhancing physical therapy students\u27 attitudes toward telecommunication technology by using a demonstration model

    The purpose of this study was to assess and enhance the attitudes and knowledge of physical therapy students toward telecommunication technology. A questionnaire was given to appraise the attitudes and knowledge of 156 physical therapy students toward telecommunication technology. The intervention was a one hour presentation on applications relevant to physical therapy practice. The majority of students expressed interest in telecommunication before the presentation, and felt that expanded use of telecommunication was important to the profession. However, only a minority of students demonstrated knowledge about specific medical telecommunication applications. The post-intervention questionnaire showed the presentation to be effective in changing students\u27 attitudes toward telecommunication, and increasing their knowledge relevant to the practice of physical therapy. If physical therapy curricula were to include exposure to telecommunication, perhaps physical therapists will be more inclined to use the technology in the future

    Incommensurate Transverse Anisotropy Induced by Disorder and Spin-Orbit-Vibron Coupling in Mn12-acetate

    It has been shown within density-functional theory that in Mn12_{12}-acetate there are effects due to disorder by solvent molecules and a coupling between vibrational and electronic degrees of freedom. We calculate the in-plane principal axes of the second-order anisotropy caused by the second effect and compare them with those of the fourth-order anisotropy due to the first effect. We find that the two types of the principal axes are not commensurate with each other, which results in a complete quenching of the tunnel-splitting oscillation as a function of an applied transverse field.Comment: Will be presented at MMM conference 200

    Smooth transitions from Schwarzschild vacuum to de Sitter space

    We provide an infinity of spacetimes which contain part of both the Schwarzschild vacuum and de Sitter space. The transition, which occurs below the Schwarzschild event horizon, involves only boundary surfaces (no surface layers). An explicit example is given in which the weak and strong energy conditions are satisfied everywhere (except in the de Sitter section) and the dominant energy condition is violated only in the vicinity of the boundary to the Schwarzschild section.     The Evolution of Distorted Rotating Black Holes III: Initial Data

    In this paper we study a new family of black hole initial data sets corresponding to distorted ``Kerr'' black holes with moderate rotation parameters, and distorted Schwarzschild black holes with even- and odd-parity radiation. These data sets build on the earlier rotating black holes of Bowen and York and the distorted Brill wave plus black hole data sets. We describe the construction of this large family of rotating black holes. We present a systematic study of important properties of these data sets, such as the size and shape of their apparent horizons, and the maximum amount of radiation that can leave the system during evolution. These data sets should be a very useful starting point for studying the evolution of highly dynamical black holes and can easily be extended to 3D.Comment: 16 page

    The Effects of Auditory Perception and Musical Preference on Anxiety in Naive Human Subjects

    Background: The use of music as a method of relieving anxiety has been studied extensively by researchers from varying disciplines. The abundance of these reports focused on which genre of music best aided in the relief of stress. Little work has been performed in the area of auditory preference in an attempt to ascertain whether an individual’s preferred music type aids in their anxiety reduction at levels greater than music that they have little or no propensity for. Material/Methods: In the present report we seek to determine whether naive human subjects exposed to music of their preference show a decrease in anxiety, as measured by systolic and diastolic blood pressure values. We furthermore contrast these values to those obtained during non-preferred music listening. Results: We found statistically significant reduction of anxiety levels only when subjects were exposed to their preferred musical selections. Conclusions: Students participating in the study already had knowledge of what genre of music would best relax them. It is our belief, that within the general population, many people do not have this self understanding. We conclude that music therapy may provide a mechanism for this self-understanding and subsequently help alleviate anxiety and stress

    The Evolution of Distorted Rotating Black Holes II: Dynamics and Analysis

    We have developed a numerical code to study the evolution of distorted, rotating black holes. This code is used to evolve a new family of black hole initial data sets corresponding to distorted ``Kerr'' holes with a wide range of rotation parameters, and distorted Schwarzschild black holes with odd-parity radiation. Rotating black holes with rotation parameters as high as a/m=0.87a/m=0.87 are evolved and analyzed in this paper. The evolutions are generally carried out to about t=100Mt=100M, where MM is the ADM mass. We have extracted both the even- and odd-parity gravitational waveforms, and find the quasinormal modes of the holes to be excited in all cases. We also track the apparent horizons of the black holes, and find them to be a useful tool for interpreting the numerical results. We are able to compute the masses of the black holes from the measurements of their apparent horizons, as well as the total energy radiated and find their sum to be in excellent agreement with the ADM mass.Comment: 26 pages, LaTeX with RevTeX 3.0 macros. 27 uuencoded gz-compressed postscript figures.
