Classrooms Without Closets: LGBTIQ+ Cinema in University Education
From September 2017 to June 2020 the University of the Balearic Islands organised a monthly film workshop called Aules Sense Armaris: Cinema LGBTIQ+ a la UIB focused on giving visibility to affective and sexual diversity through film analysis in a university context. Each film was introduced with an interview with a queer activist or cultural expert related to the particular topics the film addressed, and after the screening a cinematographic and critical discussion was held in which the students contributed either with their own reflections or asking questions to the guests. This article exposes the necessity of approaching and celebrating sexual diversity from the university classroom as a form of activism. It also describes the as well as describing the criteria that were followed when choosing the films, how the monthly workshops took place and the most interesting conclusions from the post-film debates between activists, university students and spectators
The interspersed spin boson lattice model
14 págs,; 4 figs.© 2015, EDP Sciences and Springer. We describe a family of lattice models that support a new class of quantum magnetism characterized by correlated spin and bosonic ordering [Phys. Rev. Lett. 112, 180405 (2014)]. We explore the full phase diagram of the model using Matrix-Product-State methods. Guided by these numerical results, we describe a modified variational ansatz to improve our analytic description of the groundstate at low boson frequencies. Additionally, we introduce an experimental protocol capable of inferring the low-energy excitations of the system by means of Fano scattering spectroscopy. Finally, we discuss the implementation and characterization of this model with current circuit-QED technology. We acknowledge support from Spanish MINECO Project FIS2012- 33022, and CAM regional

Dynamical polaron Ansatz: A theoretical tool for the ultrastrong-coupling regime of circuit QED
13 págs.; 5 figs.In this work we develop a semianalytical variational Ansatz to study the properties of few-photon excitations interacting with a collection of quantum emitters in regimes that go beyond the rotating-wave approximation. This method can be used to approximate both the static and dynamical properties of a superconducting qubit in an open transmission line, including the spontaneous emission spectrum and the resonances in scattering experiments. The approximations are quantitatively accurate for rather strong couplings, as shown by a direct comparison to matrix-product-state numerical methods, and provide also a good qualitative description for stronger couplings well beyond the Markovian regime. ©2016 American Physical SocietyThe authors acknowledge support from Spanish Mineco

Efficient Execution of Web Navigation Sequences
This version of the article has been accepted for publication, after peer review and is subject to Springer Nature’s AM terms of use, but is not the Version of Record and does not reflect post-acceptance improvements, or any corrections. The Version of Record is available online at: https://doi.org/10.1007/978-3-642-35063-4_25.[Abstract]: Web automation applications are widely used for different purposes such as B2B integration and automated testing of web applications. Most current systems build the automatic web navigation component by using the APIs of conventional browsers. While this approach has its advantages, it suffers performance problems for intensive web automation tasks which require real time responses and/or a high degree of parallelism. In this paper, we outline a set of techniques to build a web navigation component able to efficiently execute web navigation sequences. These techniques detect what elements and scripts of the pages accessed during the navigation sequence are needed for the correct execution of the sequence (and, therefore, must be loaded and executed), and what parts of the pages can be discarded. The tests executed with real web sources show that the optimized navigation sequences run significantly faster and consume significantly less resources. This research was partially supported by the Spanish Ministry of Science ans Innovation under project TIN2010-09988-E, and the European Commission under project FP7-SEC-2007-01 Proposal Nº 218223

In this work-in-progress paper we outline a set of techniques which constitute the basis to build a web navigation component able to analyze a web navigation sequence and automatically optimize it, detecting which parts of the loaded pages are needed, and which ones can be discarded in the following executions of the sequence. Our techniques build on the Document Object Model and the first tests executed with real web sources have found them to be very effective. This research was partially supported by the Spanish Ministry of Science

Repeated sub-inhibitory doses of cassia essential oil do not increase the tolerance pattern in Listeria monocytogenes cells
Altres ajuts: acord transformatiu CRUE- CSICAntimicrobial resistance in Listeria monocytogenes biofilms is considered a risk. When using disinfectants, the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) must be contemplated to avoid resistance. The objective of the present study was to determine the MIC of four essential oils in four L. monocytogenes strains. Once the MICs were obtained, the effect of subinhibitory doses of the most effective oil was determined. Strains were subsequently subjected to increasing doses of cassia and the MICs were determined again to evaluate differences. The effect of subinhibitory doses for biofilm formation was evaluated using quantitative and observational methodologies. Last, it was studied whether the strains were more sensitive to antibiotics after being in contact with the oil. After continuous exposure to 1/2 MIC, a decrease in the initial MIC (P = 0.013) was observed, specifically for strains belonging to serotype 1/2a (P = 0.041). In contrast, the formation of biofilms did not show differences between the control and exposed groups (P > 0.05). The qualitative study showed that there were no differences in the structure of the biofilms before and after contact with cassia, except for the CECT 935 strain, indicating a straindependent trend. Moreover, species-dependent differences were observed in the conformation of the extracellular matrix
About the malleability of beliefs in the scientific community
The aim of this essay is to study the influence of external conditions close to a scientific community over the personal beliefs that those who are part of it tend to hold. A historical approach is given on the subject, first, starting from the origin of religions in ancient civilizations, second, commenting the impact of determinism driven by Newtonian mechanics, and, finally, highlighting a return to mysticism caused by the lack of a complete interpretation of quantum mechanics. It is concluded that there exists a significant correlation between the state of science in a particular time period and the beliefs held by the members of the scientific community associated with that period.Universidad de Costa Rica/[805-B9-609]/UCR/Costa RicaUCR::VicerrectorÃa de Docencia::Ciencias Básicas::Facultad de Ciencias::Escuela de FÃsicaUCR::VicerrectorÃa de Investigación::Unidades de Investigación::Ciencias Básicas::Centro de Investigaciones GeofÃsicas (CIGEFI
