    Optimal quantum control in nanostructures: Theory and application to generic three-level system

    Coherent carrier control in quantum nanostructures is studied within the framework of Optimal Control. We develop a general solution scheme for the optimization of an external control (e.g., lasers pulses), which allows to channel the system's wavefunction between two given states in its most efficient way; physically motivated constraints, such as limited laser resources or population suppression of certain states, can be accounted for through a general cost functional. Using a generic three-level scheme for the quantum system, we demonstrate the applicability of our approach and identify the pertinent calculation and convergence parameters.Comment: 7 pages; to appear in Phys.     Lepton number violating interactions and their effects on neutrino oscillation experiments

    Mixing between bosons that transform differently under the standard model gauge group, but identically under its unbroken subgroup, can induce interactions that violate the total lepton number. We discuss four-fermion operators that mediate lepton number violating neutrino interactions both in a model-independent framework and within supersymmetry (SUSY) without R-parity. The effective couplings of such operators are constrained by: i) the upper bounds on the relevant elementary couplings between the bosons and the fermions, ii) by the limit on universality violation in pion decays, iii) by the data on neutrinoless double beta decay and, iv) by loop-induced neutrino masses. We find that the present bounds imply that lepton number violating neutrino interactions are not relevant for the solar and atmospheric neutrino problems. Within SUSY without R-parity also the LSND anomaly cannot be explained by such interactions, but one cannot rule out an effect model-independently. Possible consequences for future terrestrial neutrino oscillation experiments and for neutrinos from a supernova are discussed.Comment: 28 pages, 2 figures, Late

    Detection and resection of small neuroendocrine tumours (NET) is like finding a needle in a hay stack. Use of specific tracers such as 68Ga-DOTATOC in a PET/CT study has been proven to have a high sensitivity and specificity to cells expressing somatostatin-SSR receptors. The use of 99mTc-Octreotide to detect neuroendocrine tumours during surgery is an effective adjunct for therapy. We here present a clinical case of patient with NET where these modalities help in both diagnostic and therapeutic surgery

    Giant Backscattering Peak in Angle-Resolved Andreev Reflection

    It is shown analytically and by numerical simulation that the angular distribution of Andreev reflection by a disordered normal-metal -- superconductor junction has a narrow peak at the angle of incidence. The peak is higher than the well-known coherent backscattering peak in the normal state, by a large factor G/G_0 (where G is the conductance of the junction and G_0=2e^2/h).     Weak-Localization and Integrability in Ballistic Cavities

    We demonstrate the existence of an interference contribution to the average magnetoconductance, G(B), of ballistic cavities and use it to test the semiclassical theory of quantum billiards. G(B) is qualitatively different for chaotic and regular cavities, an effect explained semiclassically by the differing classical distribution of areas. The magnitude of G(B) is poorly explained by the semiclassical theory of coherent backscattering (elastic enhancement factor)-- correlations beyond time-reversed pairs of trajectories must be included-- but is in agreement with random matrix theory.Comment: 12 pages + 3 figures, revtex, hub-92-w
