Pyroelectric and photovoltaic properties of Nb doped PZT thin films
Nb-doped lead zirconate titanate (PZT) films with up to 12 at. % of Nb were co-sputtered from oxide PZT and metallic Nb targets at a substrate temperature of 600 °C. Up to 4 at. % of Nb was doped into the perovskite structure with the formation of B-site cation vacancies for charge compensation. The preferential (111) PZT orientation decreased with Nb-doping within the solid solution region. The ferroelectric response of the films was affected by the large values of the internal field present in the samples (e.g., −84.3 kV cm−1 in 12 at. % Nd doped films). As-deposited unpoled films showed large values of the pyroelectric coefficient due to self-poling. The pyroelectric coefficient increased with Nb-doping and showed a complex dependence on the applied bias. The photovoltaic effect was observed in the films. The value of the photocurrent increased with the A/B ratio. The combined photovoltaic–pyroelectric effect increased the values of the measured current by up to 47% upon light illumination
Enhancement of Critical Current Density in low level Al-doped MgB2
Two sets of MgB2 samples doped with up to 5 at. % of Al were prepared in
different laboratories using different procedures. Decreases in the a and c
lattice parameters were observed with Al doping confirming Al substitution onto
the Mg site. The critical temperature (Tc) remained largely unchanged with Al
doping. For 1 - 2.5 at.% doping, at 20K the in-field critical current densities
(Jc's) were enhanced, particularly at lower fields. At 5K, in-field Jc was
markedly improved, e.g. at 5T Jc was enhanced by a factor of 20 for a doping
level of 1 at.% Al. The improved Jcs correlate with increased sample
resistivity indicative of an increase in the upper critical field, Hc2, through
alloying.Comment: 17 pages, 4 figures, to be published in Superconductor Science and

Correlated enhancement of Hc2 and Jc in carbon nanotube-doped MgB2
The use of MgB2 in superconducting applications still awaits for the
development of a MgB2-based material where both current-carrying performance
and critical magnetic field are optimized simultaneously. We achieved this by
doping MgB2 with double-wall carbon nanotubes (DWCNT) as a source of carbon in
polycrystalline samples. The optimum nominal DWCNT content for increasing the
critical current density, Jc is in the range 2.5-10%at depending on field and
temperature. Record values of the upper critical field, Hc2(4K) = 41.9 T (with
extrapolated Hc2(0) ~ 44.4 T) are reached in a bulk sample with 10%at DWCNT
content. The measured Hc2 vs T in all samples are successfully described using
a theoretical model for a two-gap superconductor in the dirty limit first
proposed by Gurevich et al.Comment: 12 pages, 3 figure
Effect of La Doping on Microstructure and Critical Current Density of MgB2
In the present study, La-doped MgB_2 superconductors with different doping
level (Mg1-xLaxB2; x=0.00, 0.01, 0.03 & 0.05) have been synthesized by
solid-state reaction route at ambient pressure. Effect of La doping have been
investigated in relation to microstructural characteristics and superconducting
properties, particularly intragrain critical current density (Jc). The
microstructural characteristics of the as synthesized Mg(La)B2 compounds were
studied employing transmission electron microscopic (TEM) technique. The TEM
investigations reveal inclusion of LaB6 nanoparticles within the MgB2 grains
which provide effective flux pinning centres. The evaluation of intragrain Jc
through magnetic measurements on the fine powdered version of the as
synthesized samples reveal that Jc of the samples change significantly with the
doping level. The optimum result on Jc is obtained for Mg0.97La0.03B2 at 5K,
the Jc reaches ~1.4x107A/cm2 in self field, ~2.1 x 106A/cm2 at 1T, ~2.5 x
105A/cm2 at 2.5T and ~1.8 x 104 A/cm2 at 4.5T. The highest value of intragrain
Jc in Mg0.97La0.03B2 superconductor has been attributed to the inclusion of
LaB6 nanoparticles which are capable of providing effective flux pinning
centres
