The present paper reports investigations on the application of surfactants in the stone conservation. It is found that alkyl ammonium chlorides reduce the hygric dilatation of clayrich sandstones in order of a half of the original value. Polysiloxane films can be tightly bound to clay mineral basal planes using aminoalkyl silane as primer. The water uptake as well as the hygric swelling are remarkably reduced. Well defined mixtures of ethanolic alkyl silane and aqueous aminoalkyl silane solutions form stable microemulsions. They can be used as commercial conservative products which are compatible with the environment. Die Einwirkung von Luftverunreinigungen auf Metallobjekte von kulturhistorischer Bedeutung. T. 1

Patina samples were taken from bronze bells in 16 different places along the autobahn Munich-Nuremberg and subjected to characterization by i.r., x-ray diffraction and spectral analysis. Pure components of bronze corrosion products (antlerite, brochantite, atacamite, paratacamite) have been synthesized as reference materials. In additional open-air tests the corrosion behaviour of different materials related to the chemical composition of bronze bells (Cu, CuSn6, Cu80Sn20, G-CuSn7ZnPb, CuZn15, CuZn37, CuZn40Pb2, Al, Zn, Pb, steel) was followed over 12 months. Characterization include the determination of water-soluble patina. It is concluded that on the basis of the gathered material investigations on the reaction kinetics of patina formation enable a deeper insight into the corrosion of bronze bells.
