Fearless Friday: Emma Murphy

Emma Murphy is truly fearless for her persistence and strength in working to change attitudes and stereotypes towards people with learning disabilities both on campus and in the wider community. This semester, Emma started a new club on campus called Great ADDitudes, which aims to raise awareness about ADD/ADHD and provide support for students who feel alone due to their own learning challenges. At 11, she was diagnosed and has wanted to start a club for students with learning disabilities ever since. [excerpt

Fearless Friday: Fergan Imbert

This week, SURGE is showcasing the fabulous Fergan Imbert ‘16 for Fearless Friday! Fergan is a senior at Gettysburg studying Biology with a pre-med concentration. Fergan and his bright smile can be found all over campus. He’s currently the residence coordinator for Patrick Hall and the new senior admissions intern for the admissions office. He also works in the campus bookstore, is part of the senior class gift committee, and shows off his dance skills through B.O.M.B. squad. [excerpt

Justina Molokwu ’17 has been fearlessly involved on campus in her first two years at Gettysburg contributing to the College’s goals of diversity, equity, and inclusion. A Psychology and Organization and Management Studies double major and a writing minor, the list of Molokwu’s extracurricular involvement is impressive: Diaspora House house leader, Diversity Peer Educator, Vice President of GASA, and Career Development Liaison for BSU. In addition to her roles with DPE, she is the Assistant Dean of College Life and Director of Student Rights and Responsibilities as well as the Director of the Women’s Center. Friend or FOE, a recent addition to our campus offers queer students and their allies an opportunity to connect more socially and establish a mutual understanding of their experiences on campus. The group defines itself as having a less activist approach, rather, their main focus is to create a medium for students who feel that while their sexual orientation is important it is not necessarily something they want to be defined by. As we conclude Yik Yak Awareness Week, we’d like to recognize Tiarra Riggins ’17, the fearless organizer behind this week’s events. ”People don’t realize how words can damage a soul,” says Tiarra. Her efforts this week have been aimed at stopping cyberbullying and changing the culture of Yik Yak to a more positive and uplifting space. The events during this past week ranged from a discussion on the effects of cyberbullying to daily CUB tables, encouraging students to sign a banner against cyberbullying and the negative aspects of Yik Yak. Maihan Wali describes herself as “one of those kids that always wanted to help.” So when she noticed that many of her peers in her class struggled with reading and writing, she started a peer to peer literacy program with the help of her sister and a few friends. She was only 8 years old. [excerpt

Fearless Friday: Gettysburg Anti-Capitalist Collective

The Gettysburg Anti-Capitalist Collective, also known as GACC, is a recent yet active addition to the campus community. Through their participation in debates, weekly meetings, and organization of events (most notably Wednesday night’s concert featuring political activists Evan Greer and Anne Feeney), GACC provides a forum for discussing and learning about leftist politics. On a campus that many would describe as highly conservative, GACC and its members are nothing short of fearless. [excerpt

Fearless Friday: Jasmine Santana

In this week’s Fearless Friday piece, SURGE would like to spotlight Jasmine Santana ’16! Jasmine is a currently a senior IDS major who focuses on socio-linguistics. In other words, she critically analyzes the use of language through various perspectives, such as from the point of view of Africana Studies or Women, Gender, and Sexuality Studies. A Latina woman from Washington Heights in NYC, Jasmine definitely felt a change in her surroundings once coming to Gettysburg. However, the presence of white-culture did not deter Jasmine from becoming the Fearless Leader we see today. [excerpt
