The Berry-Tabor conjecture for spin chains of Haldane-Shastry type
According to a long-standing conjecture of Berry and Tabor, the distribution
of the spacings between consecutive levels of a "generic'' integrable model
should follow Poisson's law. In contrast, the spacings distribution of chaotic
systems typically follows Wigner's law. An important exception to the
Berry-Tabor conjecture is the integrable spin chain with long-range
interactions introduced by Haldane and Shastry in 1988, whose spacings
distribution is neither Poissonian nor of Wigner's type. In this letter we
argue that the cumulative spacings distribution of this chain should follow the
"square root of a logarithm'' law recently proposed by us as a characteristic
feature of all spin chains of Haldane-Shastry type. We also show in detail that
the latter law is valid for the rational counterpart of the Haldane-Shastry

Estimation of Genetic Parameters for Peak Yield, Yield and Persistency Traits in Murciano-Granadina Goats Using Multi-Traits Models
This paper studies parameters of a lactation curve such as peak yield (PY) and persistency (P), which do not conform to the usual selection criteria in the Murciano-Granadina (MG) breed, but are considered to be an alternative to benefit animal welfare without reducing production. Using 315,663 production records (of 122,883 animals) over a period of 24 years (1990–2014), genetic parameters were estimated with uni-, bi- and multivariate analysis using multiple trait derivative free restricted maximum likelihood (MTDFREML). The heritability (h2)/repeatability (re) of PY, yield (Y) and P was estimated as 0.13/0.19, 0.16/0.25 and 0.08/0.09 with the uni-trait and h2 of bi- and multi-traits analysis ranging from 0.16 to 0.17 of Y, while that of PY and Y remained constant. Genetic correlations were high between PY–Y (0.94 ± 0.011) but low between PY–P (–0.16 ± 0.054 to –0.17 ± 0.054) and between Y–P (–0.06 ± 0.058 to –0.05 ± 0.058). Estimates of h2/re were low to intermediate. The selection for Y–PY or both can be implemented given the genetic correlation between these traits. PY–P and Y–P showed low to negligible correlation values indicating that if these traits are implemented in the early stages of evaluation, they would not be to the detriment of PY–Y. The combination of estimated breeding values (EBVs) for all traits would be a good criterion for selection
The floating churches of Volgograd: river topologies and warped spatalities of faith
This paper explores creative reuse as an alternative modality to upcycle the ateriality and documentary capacities of things, beyond the linear entrapments of historical or functional redundancy. Drawing on an amphibious ethnography of Volgograd’s riverscapes, we analyse the floating churches inaugurated after the collapse of the Soviet Union to support the revival of faith practices. Acting as mobile centres of religious activity, they morph various temporalities, functions and places into multidimensional operative domains that range from the embodied practices of sailing and engaging in religious rituals to the making of sacred space at a regional level. We conclude by suggesting that their perations and impact rely on topologies of fixed points and shifting spatialities,which provide a salient vehicle for broader geographical interrogations of memory, creativity and mobility
Surface abundances of ON stars
Massive stars burn hydrogen through the CNO cycle during most of their
evolution. When mixing is efficient, or when mass transfer in binary systems
happens, chemically processed material is observed at the surface of O and B
stars. ON stars show stronger lines of nitrogen than morphologically normal
counterparts. Whether this corresponds to the presence of material processed
through the CNO cycle or not is not known. Our goal is to answer this question.
We perform a spectroscopic analysis of a sample of ON stars with atmosphere
models. We determine the fundamental parameters as well as the He, C, N, and O
surface abundances. We also measure the projected rotational velocities. We
compare the properties of the ON stars to those of normal O stars. We show that
ON stars are usually helium-rich. Their CNO surface abundances are fully
consistent with predictions of nucleosynthesis. ON stars are more chemically
evolved and rotate - on average - faster than normal O stars. Evolutionary
models including rotation cannot account for the extreme enrichment observed
among ON main sequence stars. Some ON stars are members of binary systems, but
others are single stars as indicated by stable radial velocities. Hence, mass
transfer is not a simple explanation for the observed chemical properties. We
conclude that ON stars show extreme chemical enrichment at their surface,
consistent with nucleosynthesis through the CNO cycle. Its origin is not clear

An innovative test for detecting quantum chaos based on the analysis of the
spectral fluctuations regarded as a time series has been recently proposed.
According to this test, the fluctuations of a fully chaotic system should
exhibit 1/f noise, whereas for an integrable system this noise should obey the
1/f^2 power law. In this letter, we show that there is a family of well-known
integrable systems, namely spin chains of Haldane-Shastry type, whose spectral
fluctuations decay instead as 1/f^4. We present a simple theoretical
justification of this fact, and propose an alternative characterization of
quantum chaos versus integrability formulated directly in terms of the power

Delta-Vs and Design Reference Mission Scenarios for Mars Missions
Before setting out on any long journey, it is important to first have an idea about how to get there, how long it might take, and how much it will cost. Primarily, the answers depend upon where you are starting and where you wish to go. In the formulative stages of any mission to Mars, having quick estimates of answers to these basic questions will aid in the efficient exploration of the trade space. In this paper, we present a “mileage chart” of sorts illustrating the range of ΔV’s and times-of-flight (TOF) between various starting and stopping points between Earth and Mars. This paper expands upon a chart from a previous work by the authors. We discuss the methodologies used to calculate or estimate expected values and reasonable ranges, including some more detailed specific examples
Stress in Europe with confidence limits

All rights reserved.In this study, we modify and extend a data analysis technique to determine the stress orientations between data clusters by adding an additional constraint governing the probability algorithm. We apply this technique to produce a map of the maximum horizontal compressive stress (S_Hmax) orientations in the greater European region (including Europe, Turkey and Mediterranean Africa). Using the World Stress Map dataset release 2008, we obtain analytical probability distributions of the directional differences as a function of the angular distance, θ. We then multiply the probability distributions that are based on pre-averaged data within θ<3° of the interpolation point and determine the maximum likelihood estimate of the S_Hmax orientation. At a given distance, the probability of obtaining a particular discrepancy decreases exponentially with discrepancy. By exploiting this feature observed in the World Stress Map release 2008 dataset, we increase the robustness of our S_Hmax determinations. For a reliable determination of the most likely S_Hmax orientation, we require that 90% confidence limits be less than ±60° and a minimum of three clusters, which is achieved for 57% of the study area, with small uncertainties of less than ±10° for 7% of the area. When the data density exceeds 0.8×10^-3 data/km2, our method provides a means of reproducing significant local patterns in the stress field. Several mountain ranges in the Mediterranean display 90° changes in the S_Hmax orientation from their crests (which often experience normal faulting) and their foothills (which often experience thrust faulting).
