End-to-end elasticity control of cloud-network slices
The design of efficient elasticity control mechanisms for dynamic resource allocation is crucial to increase the efficiency of future cloud-network slice-defined systems. Current elasticity control mechanisms proposed for cloud- or network-slicing, only consider cloud- or network-type resources respectively. In this paper, we introduce the elaSticity in cLOud-neTwork Slices (SLOTS) which aims to extend the horizontal elasticity control to multi-providers scenarios in an end-to-end fashion, as well as to provide a novel vertical elasticity mechanism to deal with critical insufficiency of resources by harvesting underused resources on other slices. Finally, we present a preliminary assessment of the SLOTS prototype in a real testbed, revealing outcomes that suggest the viability of the proposal.Peer ReviewedPostprint (published version
Uruguay’s COVID-19 contact tracing app reveals the growing importance of data governance frameworks
Uruguay’s pioneering adoption of Google and Apple’s contact tracing interface is understandable given the urgent need to halt the spread of COVID-19. But this move also puts serious issues of governance, health policy, and human rights in the hands of software developers who have neither the expertise nor the legitimacy required to properly address them. During today’s crisis just as in the future, governments must ask the right questions about data governance if they are to come up with the right policies, write Fabrizio Scrollini (ILDA), Javier Baliosian (Universidad de la República), Lorena Etcheverry (Universidad de la República), and Guillermo Moncecchi (Universidad de la República)
Service Orchestrator in Cloud RAN based Edge Cloud
International audienceFifth generation of mobile networks (5G) is designed to introduce a multitude of new services which require higher processing resources and lower latency. Cloud Radio Access Network (Cloud RAN) is one of the most promising solutions for next generation networks. The basic idea of C-RAN is to migrate Baseband Units (BBU) to the cloud for a centralized processing and management. In our work, we propose to extend C-RAN architecture with an edge cloud: the Cloud RRH in order to enhance the quality of service (QoS). In this paper we propose a service orchestrator in the Cloud RAN based edge cloud in order to enhance resources utilization while keeping a good QoS
WIND. MEDIATED REALITY VISUALIZATION
[EN] In this paper we present Wind, an on-going research project that aims at constructing new modes of interaction with the city via poetic real-time data visualization. The project consists on a mapping device that measures and stores the intensity and direction of the signal coming from Wi-Fi routers and cellular antennae together with two Android-based augmented reality prototypes that modify what their users see or hear. The prototypes allow us to re-visit the city, intervening on our perception of it as well as allowing us to explore the geographical and perceptual disruption that arises when using one city’s data onto another.[ES] In this paper we present Wind, an on-going research project that aims at constructing new modes of interaction with the city via poetic real-time data visualization. MIPv6 Experimental Evaluation using Overlay Networks
The commercial deployment of Mobile IPv6 has been hastened by the concepts of Integrated
Wireless Networks and Overlay Networks, which are present in the notion of the
forthcoming generation of wireless communications. Individual wireless access networks
show limitations that can be overcome through the integration of different technologies
into a single unified platform (i.e., 4G systems). This paper summarises practical experiments
performed to evaluate the impact of inter-networking (i.e. vertical handovers) on
the Network and Transport layers. Based on our observations, we propose and evaluate a
number of inter-technology handover optimisation techniques, e.g., Router Advertisements
frequency values, Binding Update simulcasting, Router Advertisement caching, and Soft
Handovers. The paper concludes with the description of a policy-based mobility support
middleware (PROTON) that hides 4G networking complexities from mobile users, provides
informed handover-related decisions, and enables the application of different vertical
handover methods and optimisations according to context.Publicad
VNET: Towards End-to-End Network Cloudification
International audienceTo address the needs for future network services, existing network architecture should evolve significantly to provide a higher level of flexibility, resilience and quality of service. This challenge was also the one of computing which has found with " virtualization " a breakthrough approach to bring a high flexibility in existing computing architecture which makes today the success of cloud computing. The next obvious following step is therefore to " cloudify " the networks. We introduce the VNET project, which proposes to study some of the most complex network cloudification problems from a global point of view i.e at radio access networks and the core networks to the service hosting data centers. It will identify the challenges and address the problems related to the visualization of RAN (Radio Access Networks), the problems of service composition and dependability related to the deployment of SDN and NFV, and finally the design a NaaS platform with the associated tools to allow the specification, validation, deployment and management of on-demand end-to-end services. In addition, the project will address the manageability of this " cloudified " architecture using autonomic concepts based on the MAPE framework

To "slice" a network is to partition a shared physical network into several self-contained logical pieces (slices) that can be tailored to offer different functional or performance requirements. Moreover, a defining characteristic of the slicing paradigm is to provide resource isolation as well as efficient use of resources. In this context, the thesis described in this paper contributes to the problem of slicing WiFi networks by proposing a solution to the problem of enforcing and controlling slices in WiFi Access Points. The focus of the research is on a variant of network slicing called QoS Slicing, in which slices have specific performance requirements. In this document, we describe the two main contributions of our research, a resource allocation mechanism to assign resources to slices, and a solution to enforce and control slices with performance requirements in WiFi Access Points. This work has been supported by the European Commission and the Spanish Government (Fondo Europeo de Desarrollo Regional, FEDER) by means of the EU H2020 NECOS (777067) and ADVICE (TEC2015-71329) projects.Peer ReviewedPostprint (author's final draft
SLA4CLOUD: Measurement and SLA Management of Heterogeneous Cloud Infrastructures Testbeds
International audienceThere is an increasing number of cloud platforms emerging in both academia and industry. They often allow the collaboration of a pool of resources from multiple infrastructures (IaaS) in order to benefit from the unique features that each presents. AmSud SLA4CLOUD project is a collaboration between research groups from South America and France on Cloud Computing with the aim to develop different offers of Cloud Service with Service a Level Agreement (SLA) representation. This project builds on different existing projects such as the EU Easi-Clouds project. After introducing the main capabilities and features of OpenStack, this document addresses the integration of OpenStack-based platforms into a larger and heterogeneous multi-cloud infrastructures distributed in different continents. Finally, we aim to implement a strategy for dynamic services composition and optimal placement of virtual machines in order to improve network capabilities without compromising performance requirements as specified in a SLA
An efficient algorithm for fast service edge selection in cloud-based telco networks

This makes a highly distributed processing environment a reality, which is expected to enable next-generation services. This article proposes a novel and efficient algorithm to determine the best service execution locations through the “service edge”, a concept that groups services in categories according to their requirements and benefits from the flexibility of distributed cloud resources. The paper is focused on describing the algorithm so that it can be integrated into the telco operators’ management and orchestration systems. Simulation results underpin the practical feasibility of the proposed algorithm. The European Commission has partly funded this work
