Some evidence on financial factors in the determination of aggregate business investment
Standard theories of investment behaviour have concentrated on the neoclassical and
Tobin’s Q approaches, with most empirical work on aggregate data focusing on the former. In contrast,
a separate literature on monetary transmission, centred on the credit channel and financial accelerator
effects, has highlighted the potential impact of credit market imperfections in constraining the
investment behaviour of firms. In this paper we present evidence at a macro level for the G7 countries
that a broad range of financial variables, consistent with the valuation ratio, financial accelerator and
credit channel approaches, are relevant determinants of business fixed investment above those variables
normally included in traditional macroeconomic investment functions. The results indicate a wider
incidence of these financial effects on investment than the existing literature, focused as it is on the US,
would otherwise indicate
An explorable public transcriptomics compendium for eukaryotic microalgae
Abstract Eukaryotic microalgae dominate primary photosynthetic productivity in fluctuating nutrient-rich environments, including coastal, estuarine and polar regions, where competition and complexity are presumably adaptive and dynamic traits. Numerous genomes and transcriptomes of these species have been carefully sequenced, providing an unprecedented view into the vast genetic repertoires and the diverse transcriptional programs operating inside these organisms. Here we collected, re-mapped, quantified and clustered publicly available transcriptome data for ten different eukaryotic microalgae in order to develop new insights into their molecular systems biology, as well as to provide a large new resource of integrated information to facilitate the efforts of others to further compare and contextualize the results of individual and new experiments within and between species. This is summarized herein and provided for public use by the eukaryotic microalgae research community
A new device to treat intra-capsular fracture neck of femur non-union
In adolescents and young adults, femoral neck fractures often result from high-velocity trauma. These fractures are usually of vertical shear pattern. There is an increased incidence of avascular necrosis and non-union, which is difficult to treat. Non-union of fractured neck of femur in young adults is a serious problem. There is growing evidence that these fractures should be treated with an angle-stable device to improve biomechanics at the fracture site. An ideal implant should prevent varus deformation and retroversion of the fracture in order to prevent failure of the osteosynthesis and thus preventing cut-out of implant and non-union at the fracture site. We report the first use of an Orthofix Gottfried Percutaneous Compression Plate (PC.C.P.) (Orthofix, Guilford, UK) to treat a non-union of an intra-capsular fractured neck of femur. We recommend this, in combination with autologous bone grafting, via a mini hip modification of the Smith–Petersen approach

Coherent State Approach to Quantum Clocks
The ``problem of time'' has been a pressing issue in quantum gravity for some
time. To help understand this problem, Rovelli proposed a model of a two
harmonic oscillators system where one of the oscillators can be thought of as a
``clock'' for the other oscillator thus giving a natural time reference frame
for the system. Recently, the author has constructed an explicit form for the
coherent states on the reduced phase space of this system in terms of Klauder's
projection operator approach. In this paper, by using coherent state
representations and other tools from coherent state quantization, I investigate
the construction of gauge invariant operators on this reduced phase space, and
the ability to use a quantum oscillator as a ``clock.''Comment: 13 pages, Late
