The annual number of suicides in Japan has exceeded 30,000 since 1998, including approximately 300 children. While this may be a small proportion of the overall number, suicide among children is an important issue in school education given the vulnerability of children to influence from others and the risk of suicide clusters. Home economics is a subject that covers life in general and captures the lives of individuals from the perspective of lifelong development. It is a subject that cultivates the strength to live, and may provide opportunities for in−depth implementation of “education on life”. In the present study, we aimed to explore possibilities for implementation of “education on life” in home economics by analyzing case examples of implementation in Hyogo Prefecture, which has taken a leading role in education concerning life. Analysis revealed the following 25 case examples in the 5−year period between 2007 and 2011: elementary school, n=11; junior high school, n=8; and senior high school, n=6. Education on life was implemented in settings such as class subjects, moral education, and overall learning, and often involved hands−on activities and was in some cases provided in conjunction with school events. As learning effects, the joy of living derived from enhancement of self−esteem and self−worth was seen in many cases. In addition, implementation of “education on life” in home economics education was considered sufficiently feasible based on its relevance to independence in life, which is the objective of home economics, and these approaches were thought to play an important role in education

Circadian production of melatonin in cartilage modifies rhythmic gene expression

Endochondral ossification, including bone growth and other metabolic events, is regulated by circadian rhythms. Herein, we provide evidence that melatonin has a direct effect on the circadian rhythm of chondrocytes. We detected mRNA expression of the genes which encode the melatonin-synthesizing enzymes AANAT (arylalkylamine N-acetyltransferase) and HIOMT (hydroxyindole O-methyltransferase), as well as the melatonin receptors MT1 and MT2 in mouse primary chondrocytes and cartilage. Production of melatonin was confirmed by mass spectrometric analysis of primary rat and chick chondrocytes. Addition of melatonin to primary mouse chondrocytes caused enhanced cell growth and increased expression of Col2a1, Aggrecan, and Sox9, but inhibited Col10a1 expression in primary BALB/c mouse chondrocytes. Addition of luzindole, an MT1 and MT2 antagonist, abolished these effects. These data indicate that chondrocytes produce melatonin, which regulates cartilage growth and maturation via the MT1 and MT2 receptors. Kinetic analysis showed that melatonin caused rapid upregulation of Aanat, Mt1, Mt2, and Pthrp expression, followed by Sox9 and Ihh. Furthermore, expression of the clock gene Bmal1 was induced, while that of Per1 was downregulated. Chronobiological analysis of synchronized C3H mouse chondrocytes revealed that melatonin induced the cyclic expression of Aanat and modified the cyclic rhythm of Bmal1, Mt1, and Mt2. In contrast, Mt1 and Mt2 showed different rhythms from Bmal1 and Aanat, indicating the existence of different regulatory genes. Our results indicate that exogenous and endogenous melatonin work in synergy in chondrocytes to adjust rhythmic expression to the central suprachiasmatic nucleus clock

A52-year-old man visited our hospital because of epigastralgia. The colonoscopic examination revealed an about 4cm-protruded lesion like SMT on the appendix and findings of the biopsy specimen were compatible with the disgnosis of signet ring cell carcinoma. The primary lesion was unknown by upper gastrointestinal endoscopy, CT and PET, and the tumor markers were normal revel. At laparotomy, severe peritoneal metastasis was revealed in the abdominal cavity, especially appendix. Severe stenosis of ileocecum was found, so we conducted ileocecal resection. The histopathological diagnosis was primary signet ring cell caicinoma of appendix, SE, N2, M0, P3, pStage Ⅳ. Postoperatively mFOLFOX was started, but allergic reaction was seen after1cycle. We started Panitumumab/CPT-11and the patient attended our emergency department with shivering chill and fever on treatment day10. The next day he became shock state and CT revealed free air. Operation might not save his life and we started supportive care. He died on the day. The cause of his death was peritonitis by cancer perforation

New study shows that e-learning system "Kyonet" can help whether used for study or classroom. We administered the questionnaire at the end of the first semester. From an analysis of the results of our questionnaire for students. this study shows the following.1. Students utilizes "Kyonet" voluntarily as an on-demand tool. The tool contains: 1) Videos regarding basic nursing skills: Nursing demonstrationsby teachers are shown in the videos and they are delivered on Kyoritsu University\u27s ICT, "Kyonet". They help students to study when they prepare or review. 2) Mini-exams: These are also delivered on "Kyonet".2. Videos content attracts students interest when they prepare to study.3. Mini-exams help students what they\u27ve learned
