Further Evidence that the Redshifts of AGN Galaxies May Contain Intrinsic Components
In the decreasing intrinsic redshift (DIR) model galaxies are assumed to be
born as compact objects that have been ejected with large intrinsic redshift
components, z_(i), out of the nuclei of mature AGN galaxies. As young AGN
(quasars) they are initially several magnitudes sub-luminous to mature galaxies
but their luminosity gradually increases over 10^8 yrs, as z_(i) decreases and
they evolve into mature AGN (Seyferts and radio galaxies). Evidence presented
here that low- and intermediate-redshift AGN are unquestionably sub-luminous to
radio galaxies is then strong support for this model and makes it likely that
the high-redshift AGN (quasars) are also sub-luminous, having simply been
pushed above the radio galaxies on a logz-m_(v) plot by the presence of a large
intrinsic component in their redshifts. An increase in luminosity below z =
0.06 is also seen. It is associated in the DIR model with an increase in
luminosity as the sources mature but, if real, is difficult to interpret in the
cosmological redshift (CR) model since at this low redshift it is unlikely to
be associated with a higher star formation rate or an increase in the material
used to build galaxies. Whether it might be possible in the CR model to explain

Extremely Luminous Water Vapor Emission from a Type 2 Quasar at Redshift z = 0.66
A search for water masers in 47 Sloan Digital Sky Survey Type 2 quasars using
the Green Bank Telescope has yielded a detection at a redshift of z = 0.660.
This maser is more than an order of magnitude higher in redshift than any
previously known and, with a total isotropic luminosity of 23,000 L_sun, also
the most powerful. The presence and detectability of water masers in quasars at
z ~ 0.3-0.8 may provide a better understanding of quasar molecular tori and
disks, as well as fundamental quasar and galaxy properties such as black hole
masses. Water masers at cosmologically interesting distances may also
eventually provide, via direct distance determinations, a new cosmological
observable for testing the reality and properties of dark energy, currently

Variability and the X-ray/UV ratio of Active Galactic Nuclei
The observed relation between the X-ray radiation from AGNs, originating in
the corona, and the optical/UV radiation from the disk is usually described by
the anticorrelation between the UV to X-ray slope alpha_ox and the UV
luminosity. Many factors can affect this relation, including: enhanced X-ray
emission associated with the jets of radio-loud AGNs; X-ray absorption
associated with the UV Broad Absorption Line (BAL) outflows; other X-ray
absorption not associated with BALs; intrinsic X-ray weakness; UV and X-ray
variability, and non-simultaneity of UV and X-ray observations. The separation
of these effects provides information about the intrinsic alpha_ox-L_UV
relation and its dispersion, constraining models of disk-corona coupling. We
extract simultaneous data from the second XMM-Newton serendipitous source
catalogue and the XMM-Newton Optical Monitor Serendipitous UV Source Survey
Catalog, and derive the single-epoch alpha_ox indices. We use ensemble
structure functions to analyse multi-epoch data. We confirm the anticorrelation
of alpha_ox with L_UV, and do not find any evidence of a dependence of alpha_ox
on z. The dispersion in our simultaneous data (0.12) is not significantly
smaller than in previous non-simultaneous studies, suggesting that "artificial
alpha_ox variability" introduced by non-simultaneity is not the main cause of
dispersion. "Intrinsic alpha_ox variability", i.e., the true variability of the
X-ray to optical ratio, is instead important, and accounts for ~30% of the
total variance, or more. "Inter-source dispersion", due to intrinsic
differences in the average alpha_ox values from source to source, is also
important. The dispersion introduced by variability is mostly caused by the
long timescale variations, which are expected to be driven by the optical

Mid Infrared Spectra of Radio Galaxies and Quasars
Spitzer Infrared Spectrograph (IRS) observations of 3C radio galaxies and
quasars shed new light on the nature of the central engines of AGN. Emission
from silicate dust obscuring the central engine can be used to estimate the
bolometric luminosity of an AGN. Emission lines from ions such as O IV and Ne V
give another indication of the presence or lack of a hidden source of far-UV
photons in the nucleus. Radio-loud AGN with relative-to-Eddington luminosity
ratios of L/L_Edd < 3E-3 do not appear to have broad optical emission lines,
though some do have strong silicate emission. Aromatic emission features from
star formation activity are common in low-luminosity radio galaxies. Strong
molecular hydrogen pure-rotational emission lines are also seen in some mid-IR
weak radio galaxies, caused by either merger shocks or jet shocks in the

(Abridged) We use a complete sample of active galactic nuclei (AGN) selected
on the basis of relativistically beamed 15 GHz radio flux density to derive the
parent radio luminosity function (RLF) of bright radio-selected blazar cores.
We use a maximum likelihood method to fit a beamed RLF to the observed data and
thereby recover the parameters of the intrinsic (unbeamed) RLF. We analyze two
subsamples of the MOJAVE sample: the first contains only objects of known FR II
class, with a total of 103 sources, and the second subsample adds 24 objects of
uncertain FR class for a total of 127 sources. Both subsamples exclude four
known FR I radio galaxies and two gigahertz-peaked spectrum sources. We obtain
good fits to both subsamples using a single power law intrinsic RLF with pure
density evolution function. We find that a previously reported break in the
observed MOJAVE RLF actually arises from using incomplete bins (because of the
luminosity cutoff) across a steep and strongly evolving RLF, and does not
reflect a break in the intrinsic RLF. The derived space density of the parent
population of the FR II sources from the MOJAVE sample (with L>1.3e25 W/Hz) is

Identification of the Coronal Sources of the Fast Solar Wind
The present spectroscopic study of the ultraviolet coronal emission in a
polar hole, detected on April 6-9, 1996 with the Ultraviolet Coronagraph
Spectrometer aboard the SOHO spacecraft, identifies the inter-plume lanes and
background coronal hole regions as the channels where the fast solar wind is
preferentially accelerated. In inter-plume lanes, at heliocentric distance 1.7
\rsun, the corona expands at a rate between 105 km/s and 150 km/s, that is,
much faster than in plumes where the outflow velocity is between 0 km/s and 65
km/s. The wind velocity is inferred from the Doppler dimming of the O VI
1032, 1037 \AA lines, within a range of values, whose lower
and upper limit corresponds to anisotropic and isotropic velocity distribution

Spectropolarimetry of 3CR 68.1: A Highly Inclined Quasar
We present Keck spectropolarimetry of the highly polarized radio-loud quasar
3CR 68.1 (z=1.228, V=19). The polarization increases from 5 in the red (4000 A
rest-frame) to >10% in the blue (1900 A rest-frame). The broad emission lines
are polarized the same as the continuum, which shows that 3CR 68.1 is not a
blazar as it has sometimes been regarded in the past. We also present
measurements of the emission lines and a strong, blueshifted, associated
absorption line system, as well as a detection at the emission-line redshift of
Ca II K absorption, presumably from stars in the host galaxy. 3CR 68.1 belongs
to an observationally rare class of highly polarized quasars that are neither
blazars nor partially obscured radio-quiet QSOs. Taking into account 3CR 68.1's
other unusual properties, such as its extremely red spectral energy
distribution and its extreme lobe dominance, we explain our spectropolarimetric
results in terms of unified models. We argue that we have a dusty, highly
inclined view of 3CR 68.1, with reddened scattered (polarized) quasar light
diluted by even more dust-reddened quasar light reaching us directly from the

The AGN Obscuring Torus -- End of the "Doughnut" Paradigm?
Unified schemes of active galactic nuclei (AGN) require an obscuring dusty
torus around the central engine. The compact sizes (only a few pc) determined
in recent high-resolution observations require that the obscuring matter be
clumpy and located inside the region where the black-hole gravity dominates
over the galactic bulge. This location is in line with the scenario depicting
the torus as the region of the clumpy wind coming off the accretion disk in
which the clouds are dusty and optically thick. We study here the outflow
scenario within the framework of hydromagnetic disk winds, incorporating the
cloud properties determined from detailed modeling of the IR emission from
clumpy tori. We find that torus clouds were likely detected in recent water
maser observations of NGC 3079. In the wind scenario, the AGN main dynamic
channel for release of accreted mass seems to be switching at low luminosities
from torus outflow to radio jets. The torus disappears when the bolometric
luminosity decreases below about \E{42} erg/sec because the accretion onto the
central black hole can no longer sustain the required cloud outflow rate. This
disappearance seems to have been observed in both LINERs and radio galaxies.
With further luminosity decrease, suppression of cloud outflow spreads radially
inward from the disk's dusty, molecular region into its atomic, ionized zone,
resulting in disappearance of the broad emission line region at lower

Oxidative potential associated with urban aerosol deposited into the respiratory system and relevant elemental and ionic fraction contributions
Size-segregated aerosol measurements were carried out at an urban and at an industrial site. Soluble and insoluble fractions of elements and inorganic ions were determined. Oxidative potential (OP) was assessed on the soluble fraction of Particulate Matter (PM) by ascorbic acid (AA), dichlorofluorescein (DCFH) and dithiothreitol (DTT) assays. Size resolved elemental, ion and OP doses in the head (H), tracheobronchial (TB) and alveolar (Al) regions were estimated using the Multiple-Path Particle Dosimetry (MPPD) model. The total aerosol respiratory doses due to brake and soil resuspension emissions were higher at the urban than at the industrial site. On the contrary, the doses of anthropic combustion tracers were generally higher at the industrial site. In general, the insoluble fraction was more abundantly distributed in the coarse than in the fine mode and vice versa for the soluble fraction. Consequently, for the latter, the percent of the total respiratory dose deposited in TB and Al regions increased. Oxidative potential assay (OPAA) doses were distributed in the coarse region; therefore, their major contribution was in the H region.
