However, in many straight forward orthodontic cases a lateral cephalogram might not be necessary. The aim of this study was to develop three dimensional non radiographic reference values for dentofacial structures and to validate this technique on orthodontic patients to determine whether or not it can lead orthodontists to the sane diagnosis and treatment plan as that obtained with radiographs. Material and Methods: 180 female and 200 male models were screened from 3 modeling agencies. 124 models were selected, and their attractiveness was rated by lay people using a visual analog scale. Intraoral scans and 3D facial scans (Canfield Imaging Systems, Fairfield, NJ) for 24 female and 25 male models with an average score of 5.35 or higher were done in natural head position, both at smiling and at rest. The two scans were then combined by using Ortho Insight 3D [TM] software (Motion View Software, Chattanooga TN). 132 measurements assessing facial proportions and dental positions were then made. Of all 132 measurements, 47 average values were selected and used by 12 orthodontists and orthodontic residents to diagnose and plan treatment for 20 orthodontic cases. 4-6 weeks later, the traditional records for the same cases were used to plan treatment and compare the results from the 3D records.
