Continuous-Time Quantum Monte Carlo Algorithm for the Lattice Polaron
An efficient continuous-time path-integral Quantum Monte Carlo algorithm for
the lattice polaron is presented. It is based on Feynman's integration of
phonons and subsequent simulation of the resulting single-particle
self-interacting system. The method is free from the finite-size and
finite-time-step errors and works in any dimensionality and for any range of
electron-phonon interaction. The ground-state energy and effective mass of the
polaron are calculated for several models. The polaron spectrum can be measured
directly by Monte Carlo, which is of general interest.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures, published versio
Doped two orbital chains with strong Hund's rule couplings - ferromagnetism, spin gap, singlet and triplet pairings
Different models for doping of two-orbital chains with mobile
fermions and strong, ferromagnetic (FM) Hund's rule couplings stabilizing the
S=1 spins are investigated by density matrix renormalization group (DMRG)
methods. The competition between antiferromagnetic (AF) and FM order leads to a
rich phase diagram with a narrow FM region for weak AF couplings and strongly
enhanced triplet pairing correlations. Without a level difference between the
orbitals, the spin gap persists upon doping, whereas gapless spin excitations
are generated by interactions among itinerant polarons in the presence of a
level difference. In the charge sector we find dominant singlet pairing
correlations without a level difference, whereas upon the inclusion of a
Coulomb repulsion between the orbitals or with a level difference, charge
density wave (CDW) correlations decay slowest. The string correlation functions
remain finite upon doping for all models.Comment: 9pages, 9figure
Exchange interactions and magnetic properties of the layered vanadates CaV2O5, MgV2O5, CaV3O7 and CaV4O9
We have performed ab-initio calculations of exchange couplings in the layered
vanadates CaV2O5, MgV2O5, CaV3O7 and CaV4O9. The uniform susceptibility of the
Heisenberg model with these exchange couplings is then calculated by quantum
Monte Carlo method; it agrees well with the experimental measurements. Based on
our results we naturally explain the unusual magnetic properties of these
materials, especially the huge difference in spin gap between CaV2O5 and
MgV2O5, the unusual long range order in CaV3O7 and the "plaquette resonating
valence bond (RVB)" spin gap in CaV4O9
Anomalous Zero Sound
We show that the anomalous term in the current, recently suggested by Son and
Yamamoto, modifies the structure of the zero sound mode in the Fermi liquid in
a magnetic field.Comment: 14 pages, 2 figure
Quantification of volumetric morphometry and optical property in the cortex of human cerebellum at micrometer resolution
The surface of the human cerebellar cortex is much more tightly folded than the cerebral cortex. Volumetric analysis of cerebellar morphometry in magnetic resonance imaging studies suffers from insufficient resolution, and therefore has had limited impact on disease assessment. Automatic serial polarization-sensitive optical coherence tomography (as-PSOCT) is an emerging technique that offers the advantages of microscopic resolution and volumetric reconstruction of large-scale samples. In this study, we reconstructed multiple cubic centimeters of ex vivo human cerebellum tissue using as-PSOCT. The morphometric and optical properties of the cerebellar cortex across five subjects were quantified. While the molecular and granular layers exhibited similar mean thickness in the five subjects, the thickness varied greatly in the granular layer within subjects. Layer-specific optical property remained homogenous within individual subjects but showed higher cross-subject variability than layer thickness. High-resolution volumetric morphometry and optical property maps of human cerebellar cortex revealed by as-PSOCT have great potential to advance our understanding of cerebellar function and diseases
The Many Phases of Holographic Superfluids
We investigate holographic superfluids in AdS_{d+1} with d=3,4 in the
non-backreacted approximation for various masses of the scalar field. In d=3
the phase structure is universal for all the masses that we consider: the
critical temperature decreases as the superfluid velocity increases, and as it
is cranked high enough, the order of the phase transition changes from second
to first. Surprisingly, in d=4 we find that the phase structure is more
intricate. For sufficiently high mass, there is always a second order phase
transition to the normal phase, no matter how high the superfluid velocity. For
some parameters, as we lower the temperature, this transition happens before a
first order transition to a new superconducting phase. Across this first order
transition, the gap in the transverse conductivity jumps from almost zero to
about half its maximum value. We also introduce a double scaling limit where we
can study the phase transitions (semi-)analytically in the large velocity
limit. The results corroborate and complement our numerical results. In d=4,
this approach has the virtue of being fully analytically tractable.Comment: 31 pages, 19 figure
The Primary Spin-4 Casimir Operators in the Holographic SO(N) Coset Minimal Models
Starting from SO(N) current algebra, we construct two lowest primary higher
spin-4 Casimir operators which are quartic in spin-1 fields. For N is odd, one
of them corresponds to the current in the WB_{\frac{N-1}{2}} minimal model. For
N is even, the other corresponds to the current in the WD_{\frac{N}{2}} minimal
model. These primary higher spin currents, the generators of wedge subalgebra,
are obtained from the operator product expansion of fermionic (or bosonic)
primary spin-N/2 field with itself in each minimal model respectively. We
obtain, indirectly, the three-point functions with two real scalars, in the
large N 't Hooft limit, for all values of the 't Hooft coupling which should be
dual to the three-point functions in the higher spin AdS_3 gravity with matter.Comment: 65 pages; present the main results only and to appear in JHEP where

Thermodynamic and diamagnetic properties of weakly doped antiferromagnets
Finite-temperature properties of weakly doped antiferromagnets as modeled by
the two-dimensional t-J model and relevant to underdoped cuprates are
investigated by numerical studies of small model systems at low doping. Two
numerical methods are used: the worldline quantum Monte Carlo method with a
loop cluster algorithm and the finite-temperature Lanczos method, yielding
consistent results. Thermodynamic quantities: specific heat, entropy and spin
susceptibility reveal a sizeable perturbation induced by holes introduced into
a magnetic insulator, as well as a pronounced temperature dependence. The
diamagnetic susceptibility introduced by coupling of the magnetic field to the
orbital current reveals an anomalous temperature dependence, changing character
from diamagnetic to paramagnetic at intermediate temperatures.Comment: LaTeX, 10 pages, 10 figures, submitted to Phys. Rev.
The Operator Product Expansion of the Lowest Higher Spin Current at Finite N
For the N=2 Kazama-Suzuki(KS) model on CP^3, the lowest higher spin current
with spins (2, 5/2, 5/2,3) is obtained from the generalized GKO coset
construction. By computing the operator product expansion of this current and
itself, the next higher spin current with spins (3, 7/2, 7/2, 4) is also
derived. This is a realization of the N=2 W_{N+1} algebra with N=3 in the
supersymmetric WZW model. By incorporating the self-coupling constant of lowest
higher spin current which is known for the general (N,k), we present the
complete nonlinear operator product expansion of the lowest higher spin current
with spins (2, 5/2, 5/2, 3) in the N=2 KS model on CP^N space. This should
coincide with the asymptotic symmetry of the higher spin AdS_3 supergravity at
the quantum level. The large (N,k) 't Hooft limit and the corresponding
classical nonlinear algebra are also discussed.Comment: 62 pages; the footnotes added, some redundant appendices removed, the

Superconductivity from correlated hopping
We consider a chain described by a next-nearest-neighbor hopping combined
with a nearest-neighbor spin flip. In two dimensions this three-body term
arises from a mapping of the three-band Hubbard model for CuO planes to a
generalized model and for large O-O hopping favors resonance-valence-bond
superconductivity of predominantly -wave symmetry. Solving the ground state
and low-energy excitations by analytical and numerical methods we find that the
chain is a Luther-Emery liquid with correlation exponent , where is the particle density.Comment: 10 pages, RevTeX 3.0 + 2 PostScript figs. Accepted for publication in
