    No full text
Searches in CMS for dark matter in final states with invisible particles recoiling against visible states are presented. Various topologies and kinematic variables are explored, including jet substructure as a means of tagging heavy bosons. In this talk, we focus on the recent results obtained using the full Run-II dataset collected at the LHC

Elliptic anisotropy measurement of the f0_0(980) hadron in proton-lead collisions and evidence for its quark-antiquark composition

    No full text
International audienceDespite the f0_0(980) hadron having been discovered half a century ago, the question about its quark content has not been settled: it might be an ordinary quark-antiquark (qqˉ\mathrm{q\bar{q}}) meson, a tetraquark (qqˉqqˉ\mathrm{q\bar{q}q\bar{q}}) exotic state, a kaon-antikaon (KKˉ\mathrm{K\bar{K}}) molecule, or a quark-antiquark-gluon (qqˉg\mathrm{q\bar{q}g}) hybrid. This paper reports strong evidence that the f0_0(980) state is an ordinary qqˉ\mathrm{q\bar{q}} meson, inferred from the scaling of elliptic anisotropies (v2v_2) with the number of constituent quarks (nqn_\mathrm{q}), as empirically established using conventional hadrons in relativistic heavy ion collisions. The f0_0(980) state is reconstructed via its dominant decay channel f0_0(980) \toπ+π\pi^+\pi^-, in proton-lead collisions recorded by the CMS experiment at the LHC, and its v2v_2 is measured as a function of transverse momentum (pTp_\mathrm{T}). It is found that the nqn_q = 2 (qqˉ\mathrm{q\bar{q}} state) hypothesis is favored over nqn_q = 4 (qqˉqqˉ\mathrm{q\bar{q}q\bar{q}} or KKˉ\mathrm{K\bar{K}} states) by 7.7, 6.3, or 3.1 standard deviations in the pTp_\mathrm{T}<\lt 10, 8, or 6 GeV/cc ranges, respectively, and over nqn_\mathrm{q} = 3 (qqˉg\mathrm{q\bar{q}g} hybrid state) by 3.5 standard deviations in the pTp_\mathrm{T}<\lt 8 GeV/cc range. This result represents the first determination of the quark content of the f0_0(980) state, made possible by using a novel approach, and paves the way for similar studies of other exotic hadron candidates

Search for new Higgs bosons via same-sign top quark pair production in association with a jet in proton-proton collisions at s= \sqrt{s}= 13 TeV

    No full text
A search is presented for new Higgs bosons in proton-proton (pp) collision events in which a same-sign top quark pair is produced in association with a jet, via the pptH/Attc \mathrm{p}\mathrm{p}\to \mathrm{t}\mathrm{H}/\mathrm{A} \to\mathrm{t}\mathrm{t}\overline{\mathrm{c}} and pptH/Attu \mathrm{p}\mathrm{p}\to \mathrm{t}\mathrm{H}/\mathrm{A} \to\mathrm{t}\mathrm{t}\overline{\mathrm{u}} processes. Here, H and A represent the extra scalar and pseudoscalar boson, respectively, of the second Higgs doublet in the generalized two-Higgs-doublet model (g2HDM). The search is based on pp collision data collected at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV with the CMS detector at the LHC, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb1 ^{-1} . Final states with a same-sign lepton pair in association with jets and missing transverse momentum are considered. New Higgs bosons in the 200-1000 GeV mass range and new Yukawa couplings between 0.1 and 1.0 are targeted in the search, for scenarios in which either H or A appear alone, or in which they coexist and interfere. No significant excess above the standard model prediction is observed. Exclusion limits are derived in the context of the g2HDM.A search is presented for new Higgs bosons in proton-proton (pp) collision events in which a same-sign top quark pair is produced in association with a jet, via the pp \to tH/A \to ttˉ\mathrm{\bar{t}}c and pp \to tH/A \to ttˉ\mathrm{\bar{t}}u processes. Search for flavor changing neutral current interactions of the top quark in final states with a photon and additional jets in proton-proton collisions at s= \sqrt{s}= 13 TeV

    No full text
A search for the production of a top quark in association with a photon and additional jets via flavor changing neutral current interactions is presented. The analysis uses proton-proton collision data recorded by the CMS detector at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb1 ^{-1} . The search is performed by looking for processes where a single top quark is produced in association with a photon, or a pair of top quarks where one of the top quarks decays into a photon and an up or charm quark. Events with an electron or a muon, a photon, one or more jets, and missing transverse momentum are selected. Multivariate analysis techniques are used to discriminate signal and standard model background processes. No significant deviation is observed over the predicted background. Observed (expected) upper limits are set on the branching fractions of top quark decays: B(tuγ)< \mathcal{B}(\mathrm{t}\to\mathrm{u}\gamma) < 0.95 ×\times 105^{-5} (1.20 × \times 105^{-5} ) and B(tcγ)< \mathcal{B}(\mathrm{t}\to\mathrm{c}\gamma) < 1.51 ×\times 105^{-5} (1.54 × \times 105^{-5} ) at 95% confidence level, assuming a single nonzero coupling at a time. The obtained limit for B(tuγ) \mathcal{B}(\mathrm{t}\to\mathrm{u}\gamma) is similar to the current best limit, while the limit for B(tcγ) \mathcal{B}(\mathrm{t}\to\mathrm{c}\gamma) is significantly tighter than previous results.A search for the production of a top quark in association with a photon and additional jets via flavor changing neutral current interactions is presented. A search is presented for the decay of the 125 GeV Higgs boson (H) to a pair of new light pseudoscalar bosons (a \mathrm{a} ), followed by the prompt decay of each a boson to a bottom quark-antiquark pair, Haabbbb \mathrm{H}\to\mathrm{a}\mathrm{a}\to\mathrm{b}\overline{\mathrm{b}}\mathrm{b}\overline{\mathrm{b}} . The analysis is performed using a data sample of proton-proton collisions collected with the CMS detector at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb1^{-1}. To reduce the background from standard model processes, the search requires the Higgs boson to be produced in association with a leptonically decaying W or Z boson. The analysis probes the production of new light bosons in a 15 <ma< < m_{\mathrm{a}} < 60 GeV mass range. Assuming the standard model predictions for the Higgs boson production cross sections for pp \to WH and ZH, model independent upper limits at 95% confidence level are derived for the branching fraction B(Haabbbb) \mathcal{B}(\mathrm{H}\to\mathrm{a}\mathrm{a}\to\mathrm{b}\overline{\mathrm{b}}\mathrm{b}\overline{\mathrm{b}}) . The combined WH and ZH observed upper limit on the branching fraction ranges from 1.10 for ma= m_{\mathrm{a}} = 20 GeV to 0.36 for ma= m_{\mathrm{a}} = 60 GeV, complementing other measurements in the μμττ \mu\mu\tau\tau , ττττ \tau\tau\tau\tau and bb \mathrm{b}\mathrm{b}\ell\ell (=μ \ell=\mu, τ\tau ) channels.A search is presented for the decay of the 125 GeV Higgs boson (H) to a pair of new light pseudoscalar bosons (a), followed by the prompt decay of each a boson to a bottom quark-antiquark pair, H \to aa \tobbˉbbˉ\mathrm{b\bar{b}b\bar{b}}. The results of a search for a standard model-like Higgs boson decaying into two photons in the mass range between 70 and 110 GeV are presented. The analysis uses the data set collected by the CMS experiment in proton-proton collisions at s= \sqrt{s}= 13 TeV corresponding to integrated luminosities of 36.3 fb1 ^{-1} , 41.5 fb1 ^{-1} and 54.4 fb1 ^{-1} during the 2016, 2017, and 2018 LHC running periods, respectively. No significant excess over the background expectation is observed and 95% confidence level upper limits are set on the product of the cross section and branching fraction for decays of an additional Higgs boson into two photons. The maximum deviation with respect to the background is seen for a mass hypothesis of 95.4 GeV with a local (global) significance of 2.9 (1.3) standard deviations. The observed upper limit ranges from 15 to 73 fb.The results of a search for a standard model-like Higgs boson decaying into two photons in the mass range between 70 and 110 GeV are presented. Nonresonant central exclusive production of charged-hadron pairs in proton-proton collisions at s\sqrt{s} = 13 TeV

    No full text
International audienceThe central exclusive production of charged-hadron pairs in pp collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 13\TeV is examined, based on data collected in a special high-β\beta^* run of the LHC. The nonresonant continuum processes are studied with the invariant mass of the centrally produced two-pion system in the resonance-free region, mπ+πm_{\pi^+\pi^-}<\lt 0.7 GeV or mπ+πm_{\pi^+\pi^-}>\gt 1.8 GeV. Differential cross sections as functions of the azimuthal angle between the surviving protons, squared exchanged four-momenta, and mπ+πm_{\pi^+\pi^-} are measured in a wide region of scattered proton transverse momenta, between 0.2 and 0.8 GeV, and for pion rapidities y\lvert y\rvert<\lt 2. A rich structure of interactions related to double-pomeron exchange is observed. A parabolic minimum in the distribution of the two-proton azimuthal angle is observed for the first time. It can be interpreted as an effect of additional pomeron exchanges between the protons from the interference between the bare and the rescattered amplitudes. After model tuning, various physical quantities are determined that are related to the pomeron cross section, proton-pomeron and meson-pomeron form factors, pomeron trajectory and intercept, and coefficients of diffractive eigenstates of the proton

Search for production of a single vector-like quark decaying to tH or tZ in the all-hadronic final state in pp collisions at s\sqrt{s} = 13 TeV

    No full text
International audienceA search for electroweak production of a single vector-like T quark in association with a bottom (b) quark in the all-hadronic decay channel is presented. This search uses proton-proton collision data at s\sqrt{s} = 13 TeV collected by the CMS experiment at the CERN LHC during 2016-2018, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb1^{-1} The T quark is assumed to have charge 2/3 and decay to a top (t) quark and a Higgs (H) or Z boson. Event kinematics and the presence of jets containing b hadrons are used to reconstruct the hadronic decays of the t quark and H or Z boson. No significant deviation from the standard model prediction is observed in the data. The 95% confidence level upper limits on the product of the production cross section and branching fraction of a T quark produced in association with a b quark and decaying via tH or tZ range from 1260 to 68 fb for T quark masses of 600-1200 GeV

Search for baryon number violation in top quark production and decay using proton-proton collisions at s\sqrt{s} = 13 TeV

International audienceA search is presented for baryon number violating interactions in top quark production and decay. The analysis uses data from proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV, collected with the CMS detector at the LHC with an integrated luminosity of 138 fb1^{-1}. Candidate events are selected by requiring two oppositely-charged leptons (electrons or muons) and exactly one jet identified as originating from a bottom quark. Multivariate discriminants are used to separate the signal from the background. No significant deviation from the standard model prediction is observed. Upper limits are placed on the strength of baryon number violating couplings. For the first time the production of single top quarks via baryon number violating interactions is studied. This allows the search to set the most stringent constraints to date on the branching fraction of the top quark decay to a lepton, an up-type quark (u or c), and a down-type quark (d, s, or b). The results improve the previous bounds by three to six orders of magnitude based on the fermion flavor combination of the baryon number violating interactions

Search for heavy neutral leptons in final states with electrons, muons, and hadronically decaying tau leptons in proton-proton collisions at s\sqrt{s} =13 TeV

    No full text
International audienceA search for heavy neutral leptons (HNLs) of Majorana or Dirac type using proton-proton collision data at s\sqrt{s} =13 TeV is presented. The data were collected by the CMS experiment at the CERN LHC and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb1^{-1}. Events with three charged leptons (electrons, muons, and hadronically decaying tau leptons) are selected, corresponding to HNL production in association with a charged lepton and decay of the HNL to two charged leptons and a standard model (SM) neutrino. The search is performed for HNL masses between 10 GeV and 1.5 TeV. No evidence for an HNL signal is observed in data. Upper limits at 95% confidence level are found for the squared coupling strength of the HNL to SM neutrinos, considering exclusive coupling of the HNL to a single SM neutrino generation, for both Majorana and Dirac HNLs. The limits exceed previously achieved experimental constraints for a wide range of HNL masses, and the limits on tau neutrino coupling scenarios with HNL masses above the W boson mass are presented for the first time
