Using a Community of Practice Approach to Transform: How an Academic Library Collections Unit Reorganized to Meet Growing Demands for E-Resources and Services During a Time of Institutional Change

    Get PDF
In recent years, technical services operations and collection management at the University of South Florida (USF) Library was operating with flat budgets, a staff organization in a state of transition, ineffective workplace communication, and a progressive loss of institutional knowledge and skill sets. During the same time, the university was characterized by a fast‐developing dynamic research and learning environment. New research endeavors and academic programs were incorporating a variety of electronic resources in their activities. In response, library administrators implemented a strategy of organizing technical services operations into a community of practice with three key elements. The three elements included redefining technical staff organization, enhancing collaboration and communication, and building new work areas. This paper illustrates how the technical services operations at USF was remodeled by modifying staff organization and workspaces into collaborative teams. The team approach has focused skill sets on multiformat collection problem solving and enhanced service delivery to library patrons. The reorganization has transformed a department previously centered on processing print publications to a department focused on managing diverse activities including evidence‐based acquisitions programs in both e‐book and streaming formats as well as diverse e‐journal and database subscriptions. The new Collections & Discovery Unit has a shared mission and vision. The unit staff members have built a knowledge base of diverse information and solutions to meet the challenges of a fast‐changing academic landscape

Communicating Collections: Strategies for Informing Library Stakeholders of Collections, Budget, & Management Decisions

A challenging aspect of the collection management process is effectively communicating with stakeholders about library resources.  Communication can range from obtaining patron feedback integral in collection planning to effective messaging elaborating on collection budgets and cancellation decisions.  It has also become increasingly necessary to explain the various acquisition models that affect the landscape of library content and use of electronic resources. In this paper, the University of South Florida will present the results of a survey of the approaches used in academic library websites to communicate collection policies along with related considerations, statistics and data, justifications, and factors affecting selection practices. Information about the important elements used to construct a dialog with faculty and administration in order to demonstrate the costs and value of library resources to those in the academic community is included. A case study demonstrating the practical implementation of these communication principles at the Arthur Lakes Library at the Colorado School of Mines will be discussed. The study will show how the Library was able to break free from a cycle of collection stagnation, which was perpetuated by a lack of effective communication. The result was that the Library was able to tell a story with data in order to communicate a message, as well as strengthen their partnerships with faculty regarding collection management

EBA in Practice: Facilitating Evidence-Driven E-Book Programs in Both Consortium and Individual Library Settings

The University of South Florida (USF) Library maintains multiple DDA and EBA e-book programs as the basis for its collection management strategy in an effort to provide the scope of monographic material required by a large metropolitan research university in the most cost-effective manner. A patron-driven acquisitions program replaced the traditional print approval plan. Leveraging this usage data, several evidence-based acquisition programs were established with providers such as Wiley, Project Muse, and Elsevier. The process began with profiling the DDA and was developed combining factors that satisfied our programmatic requirements. Successful implementation at this scale requires collaborative effort from a community of librarians and staff with diverse skill sets. The Orbis Cascade Alliance piloted an Evidenced-Based Acquisition Approach with Wiley in 2016–2017. Upon completion of the pilot, the alliance’s Ebook Working Group made content selection decisions to benefit almost 40 distinct institutions using a three-pronged approach focusing on individual institution usage, broadly used, and overall highly used titles. The alliance’s e-book strategies for 2017–2018 include setting up a second EBA pilot, while continuing the first; integrating with GOBI Library Solutions to benefit alliance members; and other plans for cooperative e-book management for the group of member institutions; all while keeping in mind goals for a broad range of content, stable costs, and making titles accessible both to patrons as well as from a technical services perspective. These two viewpoints provide a comprehensive perspective of managing multiple e-book acquisition models in both consortium and individual institutions

Spinorial Characterization of Surfaces into 3-dimensional homogeneous Manifolds

    Get PDF
We give a spinorial characterization of isometrically immersed surfaces into 3-dimensional homogeneous manifolds with 4-dimensional isometry group in terms of the existence of a particular spinor, called generalized Killing spinor. This generalizes results by T. Friedrich for R3\R^3 and B. Morel for \Ss^3 and \HH^3. The main argument is the interpretation of the energy-momentum tensor of a genralized Killing spinor as the second fondamental form up to a tensor depending on the structure of the ambient spaceComment: 35 page
