The Extent of Trade Mis-Invoicing in Turkey: Did Post-1990 Policies Matter?

We analyze the extent and the direction of trade misinvoicing in the context of the new policy environment that has affected the Turkish economy in the post 1990 period. Utilizing bilateral partner country statistics between Turkey and its major trading partners, we observe persisting export overinvoicing and an oscillating pattern of import misinvoicing at the aggregate level. Country-specific data reveal different patterns. As opposed to the general trend in misinvoicing, exports to China are underinvoiced and imports are overinvoiced. We also analyze how the liberalization policies and the customs union agreement with the European Union countries affect trade misinvoicing. We find that, with trade liberalization policies, import misinvoicing has decreased at the aggregate level. However, contrary to the expectations, customs union agreement did not help decrease the extent of trade misinvoicing in Turkey.International trade, trade misinvoicing, foreign trade statistics; Turkey.

Does Financial Liberalization Decrease Capital Flight? A Panel Causality Analysis

Our data from 21 emerging market economies for the period between 1980 and 2004 show no significant evidence of a causal relationship. Lagged values of capital flight, however, seem to increase its current level, indicating its self-reinforcing characteristic. Dependency on imported oil and its effects on current account

Oil price hikes can have disruptive effects on the current account balances of oil-importing developing countries, which largely depend on external energy sources for domestic output. Nonetheless, the relation between oil prices and current account has been analyzed only in a limited number of studies for the developing countries. This paper contributes to the literature by examining the dynamics of how oil prices impact the current account in Turkey for the period between 2004 and 2015. For this purpose, a rolling window analysis using an advanced resampling technique, namely maximum entropy bootstrap (meboot), for strongly dependent time series data was performed. The empirical results reveal that oil price fluctuations have considerable effects on Turkey's current account balance. In order to curtail the current account deficit, it is crucial that Turkey redesigns its energy policies and seeks alternative energy sources
