A Study on Mirativity in Korean Endings

학위논문 (석사)-- 서울대학교 대학원 : 인문대학 국어국문학과, 2019. 2. 박진호.본고의 목적은 한국어에서 실현되는 의외성 중에서 어미를 통해 실현되는 의외성을 연구하는 데에 있으며, 일차적으로는 개별 어미의 의미와 쓰임을 파악하고 나아가 한국어의 의외성이 지니는 형태적・통사적・의미적 특징을 확인하고자 한다. 본격적인 논의에 앞서서 의외성과 관련된 그동안의 외국의 이론들을 정리함으로써 의외성의 개념과 의미를 밝혔다. 그리고 의외성이 여러 서로 다른 언어에서 어떻게 실현되는지 유형론적 관점으로 살펴보고 한국어에서의 실현 양상 역시 살펴보았다. 그동안 한국어에서는 의외성이 독립된 의미 범주가 아니라 다른 인접 개념의 하위 범주로 다뤄지거나 다른 범주가 확장적으로 의외성의 의미를 지니는 것으로 다뤄지기도 하였다. 하지만 유형론적 관점에 입각한 연구들을 통해 인식 양태나 증거성과 의외성이 구분되는 다양한 언어의 사례가 지속적으로 보고되고 있으며 한국어의 의외성 역시도 인접 개념들과는 분명히 통사적・의미적으로 다른 실현 양상을 보인다. 제2장에서는 한국어에서 의외성과 그 인접 개념들이 어떻게 다르게 실현되는지 살펴봄으로써 한국어에서 의외성을 독립적인 의미 범주로 설정할 수 있음을 주장하였다. 제3장에서는 의외성을 나타내는 한국어 어미들 중 충분한 사용례를 확인할 수 있는 다음 여섯 종류의 어미를 추려내었다. -구나류, -네, -더-, -ㄴ걸/는걸, -다니, -잖-의 개별 의미를 살펴보고 이들이 보이는 다양한 특징을 조사함으로써 다시금 한국어에서 의외성이 독립적 의미 범주로 기능할 수 있음을 확인하였다. 뿐만 아니라 개별 어미들에 대한 고찰을 바탕으로 의외성이 단순히 어떠한 정보가 화자의 지식 체계에 포함되지 않았다는 사실만을 나타내는 것이 아니라, 그 안에도 다양한 하위 의미들이 존재하고 있음을 알아보았다. 4장에서는 어미를 통해 나타나는 한국어의 의외성이 지니는 특징을 형태적・통사적 관점과 의미적 관점으로 나누어 연구하였으며, 형태적・통사적 관점으로 보았을 때, 한국어에서는 비합성적인 의미를 갖는 어미 결합, 유사의문문 효과, 의외성을 나타내는 어미들 간의 위계에 의한 구문이 존재함을 확인하였다. 이중에서도 유사의문문 효과는 유형론적 근거를 바탕으로 의외성과 유사의문문 효과 사이의 관계가 한국어 특유의 것이 아니라 여러 언어에서 보편적으로 발견되는 현상임을 확인하였다. 의미적으로는 어미를 통해 실현되는 한국어 의외성의 하위 의미를 정리하여 기술하고 이에 따라 개별 어미가 어떤 의미를 나타낼 수 있는지 천착함으로써 의미 범주로서의 의외성의 지위를 다시금 확인하였다. 이상 본고는 어미를 통해 실현되는 한국어의 의외성을 연구함으로써 개별 어미들이 어떠한 방식으로 의외성의 의미를 사상하고 있는지 확인하였고 또한 의외성이라는 의미 범주가 어미들의 형태적・통사적・의미적 실현에 어떠한 방식으로 영향을 미치는지도 살펴보았다. 무엇보다도 한국어에서 실현되는 다양한 의외성의 하위 의미를 포착하고 이를 나누어봄으로써 한국어에서 독립된 의미 범주로서의 의외성의 지위를 더 잘 알 수 있을 것으로 기대한다.The primary aim of this thesis is to examine mirativity in Korean endings, identifying the meaning and the usage of each ending and by investigating the morphological, syntactic, and semantic features of mirativity in the Korean language. The usage of mirativity markers reveals the knowledge structure of the speaker on the ground that mirativity classifies the contents in a proposition delivered to the speaker as a newfound experience, since they are not on the speakers knowledge structure yet. First, in Chapter 2, the multiple discussions on mirativity since its first proposal in 1997 are summarized to present how mirativity is encoded not only within various languages but also in the Korean language. By doing so, the concept and meaning of mirativity are presented as well. Mirativity in Korean has been regarded as a subcategory of other adjacent semantic categories such as epistemic modality or evidentiality, or understood just as a mirative extension of those, not as an independent semantic category in itself. However a number of recent studies based on the cross-linguistic methodology have reported that several languages contain mirative strategies or miratives, which supports the concept of mirativity as an independent semantic category distinguished from modality, evidentiality, or any other similar semantic concepts, and so does the Korean language. Therefore, mirativity in the Korean language should be claimed as an independent semantic category. In Chapter 3 the following six endings: -guna(-구나), -ne(네), -teo-(-더-), -n geol(-ㄴ걸), -tani(-다니), -janh-(-잖-) can be found with plenty of examples in the corpus data, as they are selected to examine specific mirativity phenomena. Furthermore, I also propose that mirativity in Korean endings has its own semantic subcategories. The morphological and syntactic features of mirativity in Korean endings and its semantic subcategories are investigated in Chapter 4. In some cases of combining a mirative ending with another ending, the compositionality breaks. The combined ending delivers a meaning which cannot be directly inferred from its stems. And a rhetorical question is constructed with mirative endings as well. When mirativity-driven rhetorical questions are frequently found in various languages, rhetorical questions made with mirativity markers are not an unique phenomenon of the Korean language but a cross-linguistic grounded phenomenon. And I also want to tell a construction: P1-ne(-네) P1-eo(-어) which is mainly found in a colloquial corpus of the contemporary Korean language serves an indication that Korean mirative endings have different mirativity strength and they build up the hierarchy. In the construction, mirative endings can be on the place of -ne and -eo but one with a lower degree in the hierarchy always comes first. The research exploring the meanings of mirativity in Korean endings reveals its 5 subcategories. New information, expectation, confirming or strengthening the knowledge structure of the speaker through recent experiences, surprise, or the speakers rejection of information into the knowledge structure.
