Portuguese cross-border networks as nexus between the Canary Islands and America during the consolidation of the Atlantic world

UIDB/04666/2020 UIDP/04666/2020Este trabajo ahonda en las dinámicas atlánticas durante el período de la agregación de la Corona portuguesa a la Monarquía hispánica a partir de las relaciones económicas y las redes personales de la comunidad lusa asentada en las islas Canarias con la América española. Para llevar a cabo este estudio, partimos del análisis de fuentes primarias insulares, fundamentalmente notariales, así como de las publicaciones que han abordado el horizonte hispánico en el Atlántico, con el propósito de incluir nuestra investigación en una historia integral y relacionante. Como resultado, presentamos un relato de las relaciones entre Canarias y América que desborda la tradicional percepción de un derrotero mercantil unidireccional para presentar unos lazos atlánticos multifocales y transfronterizos construidos no sólo por castellanos. This article delves into the Atlantic dynamics during the period of the aggregation of the Portuguese Crown to the Hispanic Monarchy based on economic relations and personal networks of the Portuguese community established in the Canary Islands with Spanish America. To carry out this study, we have analyzed primary insular documentation, mainly notarial, as well as the publications that have investigated the Hispanic horizon in the Atlantic, with the purpose of including our research into an integral and relational history. As a result, we present an account of the relations between the Canary Islands and America that goes beyond the traditional perception of a unidirectional mercantile course to present multifocal and transborder Atlantic ties built by not only Castilians.publishersversionpublishe

UID/HIS/04666/2019This paper presents an investigation about the action of the local government against eventualities in Atlantic ports. Through an analysis of the municipal documentation of Lisbon and Tenerife I have made a comparative study between both territories during the 17th century. Based on the action of the members of the local government, I analyze the mechanisms used to solve the threats and the interests of the oligarchy. In the same way, I analyze the consolidation of communication channels between different administrations, whether Castilian or Portuguese, as an essential element to preserve security and supply. Finally, this study will explore the connections that were forged between local governments dependent on their transoceanic ties from the perspective of the analysis of the Portuguese elite that became part of the Tenerife Regiment and the ties they built with other Portuguese Atlantic administrations.publishersversionpublishe

The agency of women in the diaspora: portuguese women in the Canary islands on cross-border networks during the consolidation of the atlantic world

The Portuguese community in the Canary Islands had special significance, especially since the incorporation of Portugal to the Hispanic Monarchy. However, the agency of the Portuguese women migrating to these islands and their transatlantic ties are little known. This research, which methodologically is based on the analysis of documentary sources of the islands, addresses the implications that this triple condition of women, emigrants and foreigners had in this group in a border area under construction with the purpose of recognizing the mark of the Portuguese women who settled in the Islands and discern the social, economic and professional relationships in which they are inserted. These objectives are intended to define the identity of migrant women from Portugal in the Canary Islands from their cross-border agency during the consolidation of the Atlantic world in order to build a novel historical narrative about foreign women in border areas.Especial significancia tuvo la comunidad portuguesa en Canarias, en particular desde la agregación de Portugal a la Monarquía Hispánica. Sin embargo, es poco conocida la agencia de las mujeres portuguesas emigrantes a estas islas y sus vínculos transatlánticos. Este estudio, que metodológicamente se sustenta sobre el análisis de fuentes documentales primarias insulares, aborda las implicaciones que tuvo para este colectivo su triple condición de mujeres, emigrantes y forasteras en un espacio de frontera en construcción con el propósito de reconocer la huella de las mujeres portuguesas que se establecieron en las Islas y discernir las relaciones sociales, económicas y profesionales en las que se insertan. Redes transfronterizas en un Atlántico dinámico: la inserción de la agencia portuguesa en América española a través de Canarias (1580–1640)

This research analyses the specificities of the Canary Islands in the Atlantic socioeconomic environment and it studies the Portuguese cross-border networks during the period of the Portuguese aggregation to the Hispanic Monarchy with the aim of providing, from a cisatlantic perspective, an innovative vision of transnational Atlantic dynamics, particularly between the American and island territories of the Mid-Atlantic. Aportaciones para el estudio del tráfico de esclavos en el Atlántico durante el último cuarto del siglo XVI a partir de los registros de la isla de Tenerife.

UID/HIS/04666/2013El presente trabajo aporta una recopilación de documentos notariales relativos al tráfico de esclavos en el Atlántico a través de las islas Canarias durante el último cuarto del siglo XVI. A partir de un estudio sistematizado de las escribanías de la isla de Tenerife para este periodo, hemos localizado treinta escrituras referentes a movilidades forzadas de esclavos y que hemos transcrito para este artículo. El objetivo de este compendio documental es contribuir al abordaje de las relaciones mercantiles atlánticas, especialmente durante la frontera temporal en la que se instituye la Unión Ibérica, y ampliar la información disponible sobre diversas cuestiones de índole social relativas a este trato, tanto sobre los esclavos como sobre los tratantes. This research presents a compilation of notarial documents on the slave trade in the Atlantic via the Canary Islands during the last quarter of the 16th century. From a systematic study for this period of the notarial documentation of Tenerife, thirty scriptures were found referring to forced mobilities of slaves and these have been transcribed for this article. The objective of this documentary compendium is to contribute to the approach of the Atlantic mercantile relations, especially during the period of constitution of the Iberian Union, and to expand the available information on various relative social issues about this treatment, both on slaves and traffickers.publishersversionpublishe

The pact as a method of strengthening an Atlantic area: The Portuguese and the governing bodies of Tenerife during the Iberian Union (1580-1640)

El presente trabajo analiza el papel ejercido por los órganos rectores de la isla de Tenerife en las estrategias de la élite social insular para consolidar la inserción de este espacio en las dinámicas atlánticas, en especial con el entorno luso circundante durante el periodo de la agregación portuguesa a la Monarquía Hispánica. En primer lugar, abordaremos los vínculos que se originaron entre la oligarquía tinerfeña y los miembros destacados de la comunidad portuguesa en la Isla. Estas alianzas posibilitaron la inserción de los lusos en la administración local y, a su vez, la participación de la élite tinerfeña en las redes mercantiles portuguesas. En segundo lugar, trataremos las actuaciones del Cabildo en los asuntos relativos al Atlántico portugués como expresión de este pacto.The present research article analyses the role of the governing bodies of the island of Tenerife in the strategies of the insular elite to consolidate the insertion of this space in the Atlantic dynamics, especially in the Portuguese environment during the Iberian Union. First, this study address the links that originated between the oligarchy of Tenerife and the leading members of the Portuguese community on the island. These alliances made possible the insertion of the Portuguese in the local administration and, in turn, the participation of the Tenerife elite in the Portuguese mercantile networks. Maritime culture and insular imaginary in the historical construction of the identity of the islands of Macaronesia

Con el paso del tiempo, esta construcción se ha adaptado a los diferentes paradigmas e hipótesis sobre el origen del mundo insular del Atlántico. Esta investigación se centra en el análisis de la percepción mítica e histórica que entre los isleños constituye su imaginario insular y atlántico con el objetivo de comprender el significado peculiar de la composición de la sociedad macaronésica moderna a partir de la propia experiencia adquirida. Este estudio examina el paradigma de la conceptualización del espacio con el objetivo de proponer un método de observación supranacional de las islas. Por tanto, la investigación aborda diferentes historias con el propósito de enfocar el análisis desde distintos niveles que conducen a un estudio integral de la cultura marítima de las islas de Macaronesia. Throughout the centuries, a myth had been established around the Macaronesian islands. With the passage of time, this construction has adapted to the different paradigms and hypotheses about the origin of the island world of the Atlantic. This research is focused on the analysis of mythical and historical perception which among the islanders constitute their insular and Atlantic imaginary with the goal of understanding the peculiar significance of the composition of modern Macaronesian society from the experience acquired by the islanders. This study examines the paradigm of space conceptualization with the aim of proposing a method of supranational observation of the islands. Hence, the research approach different stories with the purpose of focusing the analyse from distinct levels that leads to an integral study of the maritime culture of the islands of Macaronesia.publishersversionpublishe

Los portugueses en Canarias durante la Unión Ibérica
