A taxonomy of digital music services

    Get PDF
This paper investigates the current status of what we call Digital Music Services (DMS). Our research objective is gaining a better understanding of the properties of current DMS and investigating the relationship between service functionality and business model. In a longitudinal research project multiple researchers have contributed to making a taxonomy of current DMS. By recurrent induction and systematic comparison we derive four archetypes of DMS; Extended Radio Broadcasting (EBR), Personalized Internet Radio (PIR), Music Exchange Community (MEC) and Online Music retailers (OMR). A metaanalysis shows that the business model, service functionality and recommendation mechanism are the identifying characteristics of current DMS. We observe a tendency of DMS to start “drifting” between the archetypes and adopting properties from other archetypes. This is not without risk, as users have a rather fixed perspective of the relationship between the offered functionality and business model of the respective archetype

Workflow Management for Multiple Sclerosis Patients: IT and Organization

Patients with Multiple Sclerosis (MS) visit various healthcare providers during the course of their disease. It was suggested that IT might help to\ud orchestrate their care provision. We have applied the USE IT-tool to get insight in the relevant problems, solutions and constraints of the MS-care and the MS care providers both in the organizational and the information technological area. There is hardly a chain of healthcare, but rather, a network in which informal communication plays an important role. This informal network worked reasonably effective, but inefficient and slow. The patient himself plays a keyrole in information exchange between care-providers. Many providers were unaware of the services that other healthcare providers could give in general or did provide to a specific patient. MS patients-count is only small for most care providers. None of the interviewed patients mentioned a lack of contacts between careproviders as a problem. They thought that lack of\ud experience caused their major problems: insufficient and inadequate care. To improve care, we proposed a solution that combines a “short MS-protocol”, the\ud introduction of a central coordinator of care and a Patient Relation Management (PRM) System. This is a simple web-based application that is based on agreement by the caregivers that supports routing, tracking and tracing of a MS patient and supplies the caregivers with professional guidelines, as written down in the protocol. It is likely that we would have suggested a far more complicated ICT solution if we had only analyzed the MS-care process as such, without specific consideration of the USE IT dimensions

Evaluating the efficiency and sensitivity of one-step cyanoacrylate fuming methods in the detection and visualisation of latent fingerprints on the adhesive side of tape

The evidential value of adhesive tape recovered from a crime scene plays a critical role in the criminal investigation as it could potentially contain things such as fibres, hair, DNA evidence, or fingerprints. Adhesive tape is a ubiquitous material that can be used in crimes that involve kidnapping and murder, as well as used to house cables in acts of terrorism. With regards to the adhesive side of tape, the sticky nature of this surface not only increases the likelihood of latent fingerprint deposits but has routinely proved to be a problematic substrate to work with. As latent fingerprints are generally invisible to the eye, enhancement methods are required to conduct adequate analysis on the fingerprint details. Despite several methods of fingerprint enhancement available, common issues including high background staining and low selectivity of fingerprint deposits create a difficult problem for forensic investigators to solve. Studies have shown that these issues can be overcome by utilising aqueous solutions of fingerprint powders, as well as traditional dye methods like gentian violet. Fluorescent dyes have also been explored and shown to be very effective when used on darker-coloured adhesive tapes. With regards to aged latent fingerprints, sticky-side powder and phase transfer catalysts have proven to be viable methods of detection and development. Traditional cyanoacrylate fuming was observed to be the best method of development in all reviewed cases, but the requirement of subsequent dye staining poses potential health issues to the user and the environment. One-step cyanoacrylate fuming has been proposed as a method incorporating the staining step into the cyanoacrylate fuming step, thus completing both steps simultaneously. As one-step cyanoacrylate fuming is a relatively new method of development, its potential application to the development of latent fingerprints on the adhesive side of tape has not been explored to its full extent and should be researched more extensively

Cyclical Enterprise System Implementations in Healthcare

Combining an incremental approach with the implementation of an Enterprise System (ES) is seen as a kind of catch 22. Vendors and implementers nevertheless lately tend to adhere to cyclical approaches with shortened implementation times. This way of working approaches the incremental philosophy, but also influences the requirements on how the implementation process is managed in perspective of its ambitions. In this paper we derive a framework to explore ambition level and relate it to the used implementation approaches in five hospitals. From the results we first observe a rise in the use of cyclical approaches. Secondly we see a dynamic relationship between implementation approach and ambition level in four of the investigated hospitals. This means that the hospitals start drifting in their ambition level, implementation approach or even both. We conclude that such a drift in most cases leads to implementation problems if not aligned within one implementation cycle

Electronic health records across the nations

    Get PDF
The focus of this special issue is to describe and compare electronic health record initiatives across different nations. We decided to include personal health records as well because these records also span the international playing field. In total, seven studies are presented from four different countries. This editorial provides some overall conclusions and an overview as a benchmark for further stud
