Breakup of liquid filaments.

Whether a thin filament of liquid separates into two or more droplets or eventually condenses lengthwise to form a single larger drop depends on the liquid's density, viscosity, and surface tension and on the initial dimensions of the filament. Surface tension drives two competing processes, pinching-off and shortening, and the relative time scales of these, controlled by the balance between capillary and viscous forces, determine the final outcome. Here we provide experimental evidence for the conditions under which a liquid filament will break up into drops, in terms of a wide range of two dimensionless quantities: the aspect ratio of the filament and the Ohnesorge number. Filaments which do not break up into multiple droplets demand a high liquid viscosity or a small aspect ratio.This work was supported by EPSRC (RG53364 and RG55605

On the coset category of a skew lattice

Skew lattices are non-commutative generalizations of lattices. The coset structure decomposition is an original approach to the study of these algebras describing the relation between its rectangular classes. In this paper we will look at the category determined by these rectangular algebras and the morphisms between them, showing that not all skew lattices can determine such a category. Furthermore, we will present a class of examples of skew lattices in rings that are not strictly categorical, and present sufficient conditions for skew lattices of matrices in rings to constitute $\wedge$-distributive skew lattices.Comment: 17 pages, submitted to Demonstratio Mathematica. arXiv admin note: text overlap with arXiv:1212.649

On ideals of a skew lattice

Ideals are one of the main topics of interest to the study of the order structure of an algebra. Due to their nice properties, ideals have an important role both in lattice theory and semigroup theory. Two natural concepts of ideal can be derived, respectively, from the two concepts of order that arise in the context of skew lattices. The correspondence between the ideals of a skew lattice, derived from the preorder, and the ideals of its respective lattice image is clear. Though, skew ideals, derived from the partial order, seem to be closer to the specific nature of skew lattices. In this paper we review ideals in skew lattices and discuss the intersection of this with the study of the coset structure of a skew lattice.Comment: 16 page

Self-similar breakup of near-inviscid liquids.

The final stages of pinchoff and breakup of dripping droplets of near-inviscid Newtonian fluids are studied experimentally for pure water and ethanol. High-speed imaging and image analysis are used to determine the angle and the minimum neck size of the cone-shaped extrema of the ligaments attached to dripping droplets in the final microseconds before pinchoff. The angle is shown to steadily approach the value of 18.0 ± 0.4°, independently of the initial flow conditions or the type of breakup. The filament thins and necks following a τ(2/3) law in terms of the time remaining until pinchoff, regardless of the initial conditions. Calming down the seas: the near collapse of an Atlantic coastal fishery

For years now the estimates of the consequences of overfishing for marine ecosystems have differed greatly within the scientific community^1^. The use of commercial catch statistics to estimate tendencies has been much criticised^2^, but alternative information sources with long time series are rare. Here we employ the historic archive (1953-2007) of the recreational spearfishery in Galicia (NW Spain), which does not have the problems common to other fishery registers, to estimate long-term changes in coastal ecosystems. Using generalized additive regression models (GAM) we estimated decreases of around 83% in the abundances of coastal fish over the last 50 years. In the same period the average body size decreased by 36%. In addition, the relative catch frequency has decreased for the most valuable commercial species. Commercial overfishing has brought these ecosystems so close to the brink of collapse that it is necessary to implement measures that ensure their recovery

The simple economics of risk-sharing agreements between the NHS and the pharmaceutical industry

The Janssen-Cilag proposal for a risk-sharing agreement regarding bortezomib received a welcome signal from NICE. The Office of Fair Trading report included risk-sharing agreements as an available tool for the National Health Service. Nonetheless, recent discussions have somewhat neglected the economic fundamentals underlying risk-sharing agreements. We argue here that risk-sharing agreements, although attractive due to the principle of paying by results, also entail risks. Too many patients may be put under treatment even with a low success probability. Prices are likely to be adjusted upward, in anticipation of future risk-sharing agreements between the pharmaceutical company and the third-party payer. An available instrument is a verification cost per patient treated, which allows obtaining the first-best allocation of patients to the new treatment, under the risk sharing agreement.
