Impacts of the Uruguay Round on the World Rice Market

How will the world rice market be affected by the reductions in agricultural trade barriers produced by the Uruguay Round GATT agreement? A CARD/ FAPRI study projects that by 2002 the world rice market will be substantially affected, not only because of greater access commitments by Japan and the Republic of Korea, but also from expected increases in world consumption that will be stimulated by rising incomes, especially in the developing world

Are There Universals and Why? A Reply to Minoura and Weisz et al.

In response to Minoura (1996) it is argued that a hypothesis-generating orientation has to be followed by a hypothesis-testing approach, a sequence which was also pursued with the structural levels of the concept of human nature. The role of culture in stimulating both universal levels of construction and culture-specific shaping of knowledge is discussed, and there is an attempt to answer Minoura's questions with regard to this issue. In response to the suggestions of Weisz, Eastman and McCarty (1996) it is proposed to extend the concept of control beyond the hitherto existing conceptualization in order to arrive at a universal construct of control

Die Polargebiete - nur weiße Flecken auf der Landkarte ?

In dem Vortrag werden zuerst die Polargebiete, Arktis und Antarktis, vorgestellt. Es soll gezeigt werden welche Unterschiede zwischen Nord und Süd bestehen und dass Antarktis und Arktis zur Zeit noch unterschiedlich auf die globalen Klimaveränderungen reagieren. Die Vorstellung schließt das Eis, und zwar Meereis und Gletschereis, sowie Fauna (Tierwelt) und Flora (Pflanzenwelt) ein. Die Arktis ist die Heimat von Eisbären und einigen wenigen Säugetieren auf dem Lande wie Moschusochsen oder Schneehasen. In der Arktis kehren im Sommer auch viele Seevögel aus den südlicheren Winterquartieren zurück, um dort zu brüten. Auf den eisfreien Flächen wachsen Pflanzen. Die Arktis ist bewohnt, sie ist die Heimat der Inuits, die früher als Eskimo bezeichnet wurden. In der Antarktis gibt es keine Landtiere sondern nur Meeressäugetiere wie zum Beispiel Robben und Seevögel, dazu zählen auch die Pinguine. Wer in der Antarktis überleben will, muss sich aus dem Meer ernähren können. Eine Ausnahme ist der Mensch, der Lebensmittelkonserven auf seine Expeditionen mitnimmt. In den Medien wird oft nur vom Eis der Polargebiete gesprochen ohne genau zu unterscheiden zwischen Meereis, das ist gefrorenes Meerwasser und Land- oder Gletschereis, das ursprünglich aus Schnee entstanden ist. In der Antarktis sind zur Zeit für den Verlust an Landeismasse vor allem einige große Eisströme verantwortlich, die schneller geworden sind und mehr Eis ins Meer befördern. In der Arktis ist es vor allem das Schmelzen des Eises an der Oberfläche der Gletscher und des Grönländischen Inlandeises, das den Eismassenverlust bedingt. Aber beide Polargebiete tragen zum stetigen Anstieg des Meeresspiegels bei. Das Meereis in der Arktis (Nordpolarmeer) bedeckt am Ende des Sommers eine immer kleiner werdende Fläche bevor es im Winter durch Gefrieren wieder frisch entsteht. Das hat zwar keinen direkten Einfluss auf den Meeresspeigel, wohl aber auf das Klima der nördlichen Hemisphäre. Der Rhythmus von Schmelzen und Wiedergefrieren von Meereis in der Antarktis hingegen ist im Augenblick noch ziemlich stabil
