    A simple image intensifying system for Berg-Barrett topography

    A simple imaging system to facilitate crystal orientation with respect to the x−ray beam for Berg−Barrett topography has been constructed. This system consists of an image intensifier tube with an x−ray phosphor deposited on its fiber−optic input plate and means to manipulate and indicate the crystal orientation. Applications of the system to studies of both crystalline and biological samples are given

    The introduction of dislocations and slip bands in molybdenum single crystals

    The characteristics of selectively introduced slip bands and individual dislocations were investigated. It was found that slip bands produced by indenting the (112) surface had three types of Burgers vectors concentrated at the two edges of the slip band while the middle of the slip band consisted of primarily the ± ½ [111] Burger's vector. Scratching the specimen with a needle almost parallel to the (112) surface in the [111] direction produced individual screw dislocations near the scratch mark. Similar scratches normal to the [111] direction produced fine slip bands with a ± 1/2 [111] Burgers vector

    Structural evaluation of concrete expanded polystyrene sandwich panels for slab applications

    Sandwich panels are being extensively and increasingly used in building construction because they are light in weight, energy efficient, aesthetically attractive and can be easily handled and erected. This paper presents a structural evaluation of Concrete-Expanded Polystyrene (CEPS) sandwich panels for slab applications using finite element modeling approach. CEPS panels are made of expanded polystyrene foam sandwiched between concrete skins. The use of foam in the middle of sandwich panel reduces the weight of the structure and also acts as insulation against thermal, acoustics and vibration. Applying reinforced concrete skin to both sides of panel takes the advantages of the sandwich concept where the reinforced concrete skins take compressive and tensile loads resulting in higher stiffness and strength and the core transfers shear loads between the faces. This research uses structural software Strand7, which is based on finite element method, to predict the load deformation behaviour of the CEPS sandwich slab panels. Non linear static analysis was used in the numerical investigations. Predicted results were compared with the existing experimental results to validate the numerical approach used

U.S. Patent and Trademark Office , 702 F.Supp.2d 181 (S.D.N.Y. 2010). An appeal of the decision is pending, and in October, the U.S. Department of Justice filed an amicus curiae brief in the case arguing that such gene sequences should not be patentable, contradicting long-standing practices of the United States Patent and Trademark Office. Given the potent impact of a possible gene patent ban on gene-based medical therapies and the biotechnology industry at large, the arguments for and against patenting human genes must be carefully considered. Unfortunately, much of the current legal debate has centered on technical aspects of patent law doctrine and not the significant policy arguments that also need to be resolved. It is therefore important to evaluate the issue in a fuller context, taking into account health care access, scientific research and ethical concerns
