    Natural Hazard Overview: Wind

    Get PDF
The National Centre for Resilience supported the Met Office and their partner organisations in the production of a set of Natural Hazard Overviews. This factsheet is one of the set commissioned to meet a requirement for Scotland-specific information on the types, scale, duration and impact of a range of natural hazards. It contains basic guidance on actions that can be taken to mitigate the impact of strong winds. The set of factsheets include information previously produced by the Natural Hazards Partnership, adapted to a Scottish context and with the addition of case studies

Search for supersymmetry in final states with jets, missing transverse momentum and one isolated lepton in √s=7 TeV pp collisions using 1 fb-1 of ATLAS data

We present an update of a search for supersymmetry in final states containing jets, missing transverse momentum, and one isolated electron or muon, using 1.04  fb-1 of proton-proton collision data at √s=7  TeV recorded by the ATLAS experiment at the LHC in the first half of 2011. The analysis is carried out in four distinct signal regions with either three or four jets and variations on the (missing) transverse momentum cuts, resulting in optimized limits for various supersymmetry models. No excess above the standard model background expectation is observed. Limits are set on the visible cross section of new physics within the kinematic requirements of the search. The results are interpreted as limits on the parameters of the minimal supergravity framework, limits on cross sections of simplified models with specific squark and gluino decay modes, and limits on parameters of a model with bilinear R-parity violation

Infallible, In Search of the Real George Eliot

Touring Exhibition and Book. This project explored and developed relationships between fiction and contemporary art. Writers from different backgrounds (fiction, poetry, academic) were invited to respond to an evolving touring exhibition of works that themselves had complex and diverse relationships to fiction. The project was the basis of a study day at Tate Britain in October 2005 that further explored interplay between these fields of activity. Funded by the Arts Council of England, the AHRB, and the University of Newcastle as well as participating venues, the project initiated 5 visual art commissions and 11 of new fiction. Work by 20 contemporary artists was shown alongside historic works from the collections of the Hatton and Huddersfield galleries. The exhibitions had an audience of 11,964 over a period of 163 days and were recommended in the Guardian Guide on several occasions. The book was previewed in Contemporary Magazine no.70

Measurement of the production cross section for Z/γ* in association with jets in pp collisions at √s=7 TeV with the ATLAS detector

    Get PDF
Results are presented on the production of jets of particles in association with a Z/γ* boson, in proton-proton collisions at √s=7  TeV with the ATLAS detector. The analysis includes the full 2010 data set, collected with a low rate of multiple proton-proton collisions in the accelerator, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 36  pb-1. Inclusive jet cross sections in Z/γ* events, with Z/γ* decaying into electron or muon pairs, are measured for jets with transverse momentum pT>30  GeV and jet rapidity |y|<4.4. The measurements are compared to next-to-leading-order perturbative QCD calculations, and to predictions from different Monte Carlo generators implementing leading-order matrix elements supplemented by parton showers

A wavelet-based method to measure the toroidal mode number of ELMs

    Get PDF
The high confinement mode regime (H-mode) in tokamaks is accompanied by the occurrence of burst of MHD activity at the plasma edge, so-called edge localized modes (ELMs). Because of the short time scales involved in the ELM crash (on JET typically 0.2 ms), standard Fourier analysis can hardly be used to extract their toroidal mode number. On the other hand, the assessment of linear stability of ELMs with the ion drift effects included, makes the identification of their toroidal mode numbers an important issue, while an accurate comparison with the theory of nonlinear evolution of ELMs requires the knowledge of the nonlinear spectrum. Compared to Fourier analysis, wavelets are suitable to study transient events on time scales comparable to the wave period. Spectral analysis based on sinusoidal wavelet functions has been applied to study the spectral properties of magnetic perturbations associated with ELMs and with their precursors, in JET plasmas with toroidal rotation driven by unbalanced NBI. It is shown that, combining wavelet analysis with statistical two-point correlation techniques, it is possible to get information on the toroidal mode number structure of magnetic perturbations during the phases that immediately precede the ELM and during the ELM crash itself

Measurement of the inclusive isolated prompt photon cross section in pp collisions at √s=7 TeV with the ATLAS detector

    Get PDF
A measurement of the cross section for the inclusive production of isolated prompt photons in pp collisions at a center-of-mass energy √s=7  TeV is presented. The measurement covers the pseudorapidity ranges |ηγ|<1.37 and 1.52≤|ηγ|<1.81 in the transverse energy range 15≤ETγ<100  GeV. The results are based on an integrated luminosity of 880  nb-1, collected with the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider. Photon candidates are identified by combining information from the calorimeters and from the inner tracker. Residual background in the selected sample is estimated from data based on the observed distribution of the transverse isolation energy in a narrow cone around the photon candidate. The results are compared to predictions from next-to-leading-order perturbative QCD calculations

Search for the Higgs boson in the H->WW->lνjj decay channel in pp collisions at √s=7 TeV with the ATLAS detector

    Get PDF
A search for a Higgs boson has been performed in the H→WW→ℓνjj channel in 1.04  fb-1 of pp collision data at √s=7  TeV recorded with the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider. No significant excess of events is observed over the expected background and limits on the Higgs boson production cross section are derived for a Higgs boson mass in the range 240  GeV<mH<600  GeV. The best sensitivity is reached for mH=400  GeV, where the 95% confidence level upper bound on the cross section for H→WW production is 3.1 pb, or 2.7 times the standard model prediction
