A study of the Eastern Pacific fishery for tuna baitfishes, with particular reference to the anchoveta (Cetengraulis mysticetus)
ENGLISH: Most of the catches of yellowfin and skipjack tuna from the Eastern Pacific Ocean are made by vessels fishing with poles and lines and live bait. From 1931 to 1954, these baitboats, on the average, accounted for over three-fourths of the total annual California landings of yellowfin and skipjack (Shimada and Schaefer, 1956). With the substantial increase in recent years in the production of the tropical tunas, there have been greater demands for live bait. This increased need for larger amounts of baitfishes has given rise to important questions relating to the manner in which these populations may be most wisely used. The Inter-American Tropical Tuna Commission has been concerned with various aspects of this problem since its establishment in 1950. This report presents some of the results obtained from the Commission's studies of the baitfishes important to the fishery for yellowfin and skipjack tuna. It traces briefly the origin and development of the bait fishery, describes its operations, extent, and yield, and discusses some aspects of the effects of exploitation upon the Eastern Pacific baitfish populations, particularly of the anchoveta (Cetengaulis mysticetus).
SPANISH: Los barcos que emplean cañas y cuerdas y carnada viva, son los que realizan la mayor parte de la pesca de atún aleta amarilla y barrilete en el Océano PacifÃco Oriental. De 1931 a 1954 estos barcos han desembarcado, en promedio, más de las tres cuartas partes de las pescas anuales de ambas especies (Shimada y Schaefer, 1956). Con el aumento sustancial en dicha producción en los últimos años, ha habido una mayor demanda por carnada viva. Esta creciente necesidad de obtener cantidades mayores de pecescebo, ha originado importantes cuestiones relativas a la mejor forma en que estas poblaciones pueden ser utilizadas. A la Comisión Interamericana del Atún Tropical le ha tocado ocuparse de varios aspectos de este problema, desde que fué establecida en el año 1950. Este informe ofrece algunos de los resultados obtenidos a través de los estudios de la Comisión sobre los peces-cebo importantes para la pesquerÃa de atún aleta amarilla y barrilete; señala brevemente el origen y desarrollo de la pesquerÃa de carnada; describe sus operaciones, extensión y rendimiento, y trata algunos aspectos de los efectos de la explotación sobre las poblaciones de dichos peces en el PacifÃco Oriental, particularmente de la anchoveta (Cetengraulis mysticetus).

Distribution of fishing effort and resulting tuna catches from the Eastern Tropical Pacific Ocean, by quarters of the year, 1959-1962
ENGLISH: This report is a sequel to one previously published by the Commission (Alverson, 1960) which covered the years 1951 through 1958. It is based entirely on information collected from the logbooks of purse-seiners and baitboats engaged in the fishery for yellowfin (Thunnus albacares) and skipjack (Katsuwonus pelamis) tuna in the Eastern Pacific from 1959 through 1962.

Geographical distribution of yellowfin tuna and skipjack catches from the Eastern Tropical Pacific Ocean, by quarters of the year, 1952-1955
ENGLISH: In a previous Commission Bulletin, Shimada (1957) has described the geographical distribution of the yearly catches of yellowfin tuna (Neothunnus macropterus) and skipjack (Katsuwonus pelamis) from the Eastern
Pacific Ocean for the period 1952 to 1955 inclusive, based on information obtained from logbook records of baitboats and purse-seiners. In view of the seasonal nature of the fishery in different areas, a summary of the
catches by smaller time units may be of additional value. Accordingly, statistical data employed earlier by Shimada have been retabulated by quarters of the year and form the basis of the present report. SPANISH: En un BoletÃn anterior de la Comisión, Shimada (1957) hizo un estudio
sobre la distribución geográfica de las pescas anuales de atún aleta amarilla (Neothunnus macropterus) y barrilete (Katsuwonus pelamis) del Océano Pacifico Oriental, en el perlado comprendido por los años 1952 a 1955 inclusive. Dicho estudio fué hecho sobre la base de la información obtenida en los registros de las bitácoras de los barcos carnaderos y rederos. Pero en vista de la naturaleza que imprimen las estaciones a la pesquerÃa en las
diferentes áreas se ha considerado que podrÃa tener valor complementario un resumen de las pescas en unidades de tiempo menores. De acuerdo con este criterio, los datos estadÃsticos empleados antes por Shimada, se han
tabulado de nuevo ahora, por trimestres, y constituyen siempre la base del presente informe.

A review of the population structure of yellowfin tuna, Thunnus albacares, in the Eastern Pacific Ocean
ENGLISH: Since its inception in 1950 by agreement between the Republic of Costa Rica and the United States of America, the Inter-American Tropical Tuna Commission has been engaged in studies of the biology, ecology and population dynamics of yellowfin tuna in the eastern Pacific Ocean. Prime consideration has been given to the evaluation of the effects of fishing pressure on the yellowfin tuna in this area in order to estimate the maximum sustainable yield. A portion of the eastern Pacific has been defined by the Inter-American Tropical Tuna Commission (1963) as a regulatory area for yellowfin tuna (Figure 1). SPANISH: Desde su incepción en 1950, por un acuerdo entre la República de Costa Rica y los Estados Unidos de América, la Comisión Interamericana del Atún Tropical ha estado ocupada en los estudios de la biologÃa, ecologÃa y dinámica de las poblaciones del atún aleta amarilla en el Océano PacÃfico Oriental. Se consideró primariamente la evaluación de los efectos de la
presión de la pesquerÃa sobre el atún aleta amarilla en esta área, para poder estimar el rendimiento máximo sostenible. Una parte del PacÃfico Oriental ha sido definida por la Comisión Interamericana del Atún Tropical (1963), como área de reglamentación del atún aleta amarilla (Figura 1).

Analogs of Schur functions for rank two Weyl groups obtained from grid-like posets
In prior work, the authors, along with M. McClard, R. A. Proctor, and N. J.
Wildberger, studied certain distributive lattice models for the "Weyl
bialternants" (aka "Weyl characters") associated with the rank two root
systems/Weyl groups. These distributive lattices were uniformly described as
lattices of order ideals taken from certain grid-like posets, although the
arguments connecting the lattices to Weyl bialternants were case-by-case
depending on the type of the rank two root system. Using this connection with
Weyl bialternants, these lattices were shown to be rank symmetric and rank
unimodal, and their rank generating functions were shown to have beautiful
quotient-of-products expressions. Here, these results are re-derived from
scratch using completely uniform and elementary combinatorial reasoning in
conjunction with some new combinatorial methodology developed elsewhere by the

Using {\sc top-c} for Commodity Parallel Computing in Cosmic Ray Physics Simulations
{\sc top-c} (Task Oriented Parallel C) is a freely available package for
parallel computing. It is designed to be easy to learn and to have good
tolerance for the high latencies that are common in commodity networks of
computers. It has been successfully used in a wide range of examples, providing
linear speedup with the number of computers. A brief overview of {\sc top-c} is

Enhancing the heavy Higgs signal with jet-jet profile cuts
The jet-jet profile, or detailed manner, in which transverse energy and mass
are distributed around the jet-jet system resulting from the hadronic decay of
a boson in the process Higgs at a proton-proton collider energy of
40\tev is carefully examined. Two observables are defined that can be used to
help distinguish the -jet-jet signal from Higgs decay from the
``ordinary'' QCD background arising from the large transverse momentum
production of single bosons plus the associated jets. By making cuts on
these observables, signal to background enhancement factors greater than
