    A Global Labour Constitution?

    This article explores the argument that the idea of the labour constitution, as developed by Hugo Sinzheimer, offers a useful perspective for thinking about labour law today. With reference to the work of Wolfgang Streeck and Karl Polanyi, it highlights the potential benefits of the labour constitution as a framework for analysis. With a view to developing and updating Sinzheimer’s blueprint for a – national – labour constitution, it then engages with two lines of theoretical enquiry into the nature of constitutionalism under conditions of advanced economic globalisation. It concludes by outlining an agenda for further research, informed and inspired by the idea of a global labour constitution

    Revstack sort, zigzag patterns, descent polynomials of tt-revstack sortable permutations, and Steingr\'imsson's sorting conjecture

    In this paper we examine the sorting operator T(LnR)=T(R)T(L)nT(LnR)=T(R)T(L)n. Applying this operator to a permutation is equivalent to passing the permutation reversed through a stack. We prove theorems that characterise tt-revstack sortability in terms of patterns in a permutation that we call zigzagzigzag patterns. Using these theorems we characterise those permutations of length nn which are sorted by tt applications of TT for t=0,1,2,n−3,n−2,n−1t=0,1,2,n-3,n-2,n-1. We derive expressions for the descent polynomials of these six classes of permutations and use this information to prove Steingr\'imsson's sorting conjecture for those six values of tt. Symmetry and unimodality of the descent polynomials for general tt-revstack sortable permutations is also proven and three conjectures are given

    Wedderburn and the theory of labour law: building on Kahn-Freund

    This paper aims to assess the nature and significance of Lord Wedderburn’s contribution to the elaboration of a theory of labour law. Noting the extent to which Wedderburn was influenced, in this respect as in others, by the work of Otto Kahn-Freund, it focuses on the question of whether Wedderburn ever developed a theory of labour law that was clearly distinguishable from Kahn-Freund’s. Were there significant differences in the two scholars’ expositions of abstentionism, or collective laissez-faire? Through a close reading of Wedderburn’s work, it is suggested that Wedderburn was a strong proponent of the principle of collective laissez-fare, in his early as well as his later writing. In the changed political context of the 1980s and 1990s, he undertook the important task of seeking to update or restate the principle as an expression of social-democratic values in the field of work and working relationships

    Dukes argues that the quest for truth, understanding, and victim-defined repair present more appropriate vehicles for addressing certain cases of severe injustice than might a focus upon apology and forgiveness. In his work, he helps construct conversations among people who often have different and conflicting interests, such that they may gain knowledge--knowledge about one another, about their relationships, and about the issues at stake. He acknowledges that he does focus on helping to build resilient and sustainable communities, but he also insists that productive resolution of some problems can happen in spite of, even because of, the lack of full reconciliation, including forgiveness, in social relationships

    Quantum state revivals in quantum walks on cycles

    Recurrence in the classical random walk is well known and described by the P\'olya number. For quantum walks, recurrence is similarly understood in terms of the probability of a localized quantum walker to return to its origin. Under certain circumstances the quantum walker may also return to an arbitrary initial quantum state in a finite number of steps. Quantum state revivals in quantum walks on circles using coin operators which are constant in time and uniform across the path have been described before but only incompletely. In this paper we find the general conditions for which full-quantum state revival will occur.Comment: 19 pages, 3 figure
