Selective oxidation of methane to ethane and ethylene over various oxide catalysts
Preliminary results are reported for the oxidative coupling of methane to give ethane/ethylene mixtures over a series of different catalyst formulations; the temperature range studied is 650–850°C. A comparison is made of the behaviour of lead/alumina and lithium/magnesia materials. It is found that the former samples give ethane and ethylene plus a predominance of CO2 whereas the latter give ethane and ethylene plus a mixture of CO, CO2 and H2; at higher temperatures, the lead materials give also H2 and CO. The lithium-containing materials are much more stable than the lead-containing ones; the latter lose lead, probably by volatilisation of the metal. A number of other oxide materials have also been examined and have been found to be less effective, having lower activities and selectivities than the lead- and lithium-containing systems
Preparation of supported vanadium and molybdenum oxide catalysts using metal acetylacetonate complexes
Supported vanadium and molybdenum oxide catalysts were prepared by reaction of the corresponding acetylacetonate complex in a non-aqueous solution with the surface hydroxyl groups of the carrier. Continuous or batch adsorption of the metal acetylacetonate from toluene, as well as wet impregnation from ethanol, resulted in a uniform coverage of the support. The applied metal oxide was probably present on the surface as a monomolecular dispersion. When readsorption or reimpregnation from toluene was carried out with TiO2 as support, metal oxide crystallites were formed, which could readily be detected with laser Raman spectroscopy. Reimpregnation from ethanol led to a complete occupancy of the surface hydroxyl groups of the carrier without the formation of metal oxide multilayers or crystallites
The role of potassium as a promoter in iron catalysts for ammonia synthesis
Five ammonia synthesis catalysts, mainly differing in potassium content, were prepared from a commercial doubly promoted iron catalyst. The activities of these catalysts were measured at 350–450 °C and 5–200 atm. The experimental reaction rates were fitted to the modified Temkin rate equation. Increasing the potassium content from 0.1 to 3.8 wt% results in increasing the order in H2 from 0.7 to 1.5. The change from singly to doubly promoted behavior is gradual. The nature of catalysts with a relatively high K-content is changed, preventing the formation of NH (or NH2) groups so that N-atoms become the main species on the surface, which explains the higher order in H2
Studies on the promotion of nickel—alumina coprecipitated catalysts: I. Titanium oxide
A series of TiO2-promoted nickel—alumina catalysts has been prepared and characterized. The promoter was added in various proportions to a calcined coprecipitated nickel—alumina material by adsorption of the acetylacetonate complex of titanium, followed by further calcination and reduction. The structure of the resultant materials was similar to that of the unpromoted coprecipitated nickel—alumina. The chemisorption properties of the catalyst and its behaviour in the CO/H2 reaction were characteristic of a strong metal-support interaction (SMSI) reported in the literature for Ni/TiO2. The strong adsorption of both carbon monoxide and hydrogen were suppressed while the activity for carbon monoxide hydrogenation was increased, the activation energy being lowered. The higher activity, however, was relatively unstable under reaction conditions
Glutathione S-transferase activity and isoenzyme composition in benign ovarian tumours, untreated malignant ovarian tumours, and malignant ovarian tumours after platinum/cyclophosphamide chemotherapy.
Glutathione S-transferase (GST) isoenzyme composition, isoenzyme quantities and enzymatic activity were investigated in benign (n = 4) ovarian tumours and malignant ovarian tumours, before (n = 20) and after (n = 16) chemotherapy. Enzymatic activity of GST in cytosols was measured by determining 1-chloro-2,4-dinitrobenzene conjugation with glutathione, cytosolic GST subunits were determined by wide pore reversed phase HPLC, using a S-hexylglutathione-agarose affinity column, and isoelectric focussing. Both GST activity and GST pi amount were not related to histopathologic type, differentiation grade, or tumour volume index in untreated malignant tumours. GST isoenzyme patterns were identical in benign tumours and malignant tumours before and after platinum/cyclophosphamide chemotherapy, while GST pi was the predominant transferase. Mean GST activity and GST pi amount were decreased (P < 0.05) in malignant ovarian tumours after platinum/cyclophosphamide chemotherapy compared to untreated ovarian malignant tumours. No relation was found in untreated ovarian tumours between GST pi amount and response to platinum/cyclophosphamide chemotherapy. Thus, within the limitations of the current study no arguments were found for a role of GST in in vivo drug resistance of malignant ovarian tumours to platinum/cyclophosphamide chemotherapy
The Effect of IFN-Îł, Alum and Complete Freund Adjuvant on TNP-KLH Induced Ig.G1, IgE and IgG2a Responses in Mice
Adjuvants are considered to play an important role in directing the
isotype and amount of antibodies produced upon immunization by
conducting the development of either Th-1 or Th-2 cells upon T-cell
stimulation. This is based on the different cytokine production
patterns that were observed after in vitro resttmulation of T cells
isolated from mice immunized with antigen either adsorbed on alum or
emulsified in complete Freund adjuvant (CFA). However, other studies
suggest that primarily the type of antigen determines which isotypes
are produced and to what extent. In these studies, however, IgE was
not determined. Therefore, this study examined whether alum and CFA
influenced the amount and/or ratio of IgG1, IgE and IgG2a produced
after TNP-KLH immunization. Similar levels of IgG1, IgE and IgG2a
antibodies were found upon immunization with TNP-KLH either adsorbed
on alum or emulsified in CFA. Moreover, administration of IFN-Îł in
combination with TNP-KLH adsorbed on alum did not increase the
amount of IgG2a produced. IFN-Îł treatment resulted in an increased
IL-6 and decreased IFN-Îł production by spleen cells upon Con A
stimulation, whereas it did not change the IL-4 production in
similar conditions. The presented results suggest that upon
immunization with TNP-KLH high IL-4 levels are produced, resulting
in an antibody response that is dominated by IgG1, independent of the
adjuvant employed. The IL-4 inducing property of TNP-KLH is
substantiated by the finding that repeated immunization of mice with
TNP-KI, without adjuvant, increases the serum total IgE level. The
presented data suggest that the carrier part of TNP-KLH
preferentially results in Th-2 cell activity after which the
adjuvant merely enhances the antibody responses generated
The incidence and characteristics of venous thromboembolisms in paediatric-onset inflammatory bowel disease; a prospective international cohort study based on the PIBD-SETQuality Safety Registry.
BACKGROUND & AIMS: Guidelines regarding thromboprophylaxis for venous thromboembolisms (VTE) in children with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) are based on limited paediatric evidence. We aimed to prospectively assess the incidence of VTE in paediatric-onset IBD (PIBD), characterize PIBD patients with VTE, and identify potential IBD-related risk factors. METHODS: From October 2016 till September 2020, paediatric gastroenterologists prospectively replied to the international Safety Registry, monthly indicating whether they had observed a VTE case in a patient <19 years with IBD. IBD details (type, Paris classification, clinical and biochemical disease activity, treatment) and VTE details (type, location, treatment, outcome) were collected. To estimate the VTE incidence, participants annually reported the number of PIBD patients, data source and catchment area of their center. A systematic literature review and meta-analysis was performed to calculate the VTE incidence in the general paediatric population. RESULTS: Participation of 129 PIBD centers resulted in coverage of 24,802 PIBD patients. Twenty cases of VTE were identified (30% Crohn's disease). The VTE incidence was 3.72 [95%CI 2.27 - 5.74] per 10,000 person-years, 14-fold higher than in the general paediatric population (0.27 [95%CI 0.18-0.38], p<0.001). Cerebral sinus venous thrombosis was most frequently reported (50%). All but one patient had active IBD, 45% were using steroids and 45% hospitalized. No patient received thromboprophylaxis, whereas according to current PIBD guidelines, this was recommended in 4/20 patients. CONCLUSION: There is an increased risk of VTE in the PIBD population compared to the general paediatric population. Awareness of VTE occurrence and prevention should be extended to all PIBD patients with active disease, especially those hospitalized
