Changes in the Distribution of "Acris crepitans blanchardi", with Studies of Nesting Microhabitat and the Possible Impact of Ultraviolet-B Radiation
52 leaves. Advisor: James L. Christiansen.Field surveys were completed to determine the current distribution of "Acris crepitans blanchardi" (cricket frog) in lowa, Minnesota, and South Dakota. These field surveys were unable to locate any populations of cricket frogs in Minnesota, South Dakota, or the northernmost tier of lowa counties. This suggests that the range of the cricket frog has been reduced by approximately seventy miles from its northern extreme. The possible impact of ultraviolet (UV) radiation was tested on six species of amphibian eggs as a possible cause for this decline. These
included "Acris crepitans", "Ambystoma", "Bufo americanus", "Hyla versicolor complex", "Pseudacris triseriata", and "Rana pipiens". The eggs were subjected to three different light treatments, allowing full transmittance of light, blocking out UV-B and lower wavelengths, and blocking out lower than UV-B wavelengths. "Acris crepitans", "Ambystoma", and "Rana pipiens" showed significantly greater susceptibility to these light treatments. Four factors contribute to radiation-linked destruction of cricket frog eggs. They are among the most susceptible to UV radiation. They are unprotected by large egg masses, egg sheaths, or pigment. They are laid closer to the water surface than other species studied. Finally, they are laid later in the year and are therefore exposed to a longer period of solar radiation than are the other frogs
Beta asymmetry parameter in the decay of 114In
The beta asymmetry parameter A for the pure Gamow-Teller decay of 114In is
reported. The low temperature nuclear orientation method was combined with a
GEANT4 based simulation code allowing for the first time to address in detail
the effects of scattering and of the magnetic field. The result, A = -0.994 +/-
0.010stat +/- 0.010syst, constitutes the most accurate value for the asymmetry
parameter of a nuclear beta transition to date. The value is in agreement with
the Standard Model prediction of A = -1 and provides new limits on tensor type

The half-life of Fr in Si and Au at 4K and at mK temperatures
The half-life of the decaying nucleus Fr was determined in
different environments, i.e. embedded in Si at 4 K, and embedded in Au at 4 K
and about 20 mK. No differences in half-life for these different conditions
were observed within 0.1%. Furthermore, we quote a new value for the absolute
half-life of Fr of t = 286.1(10) s, which is of comparable
precision to the most precise value available in literature

Background: The aim of this study was to gain insight into the meaning of work in the everyday lives of people with relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis, and the barriers and facilitators to staying in work.Methods: Nineteen employed adults diagnosed with relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis participated in narrative interviews. All interviews were transcribed and coded for thematic analysis.Results: For people with relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis, continuing to work was a precarious balancing act. Five themes influenced this balance: becoming familiar with the disease, adjusting expectations, having an understanding and realistic line manager, seeing work as meaningful life activity and strategic considerations.Conclusions: People receiving a diagnosis of relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis have to refamiliarize themselves with their own body in a meaningful way to be able to continue their work. Rehabilitation professionals can support them herein by taking into account not merely functional capabilities but also identity aspects of the body. Medication that stabilizes symptoms supports making the necessary adjustments. A trusting relationship with the line manager is vital for this adaptation process. Precision measurements of the Co -asymmetry parameter in search for tensor currents in weak interactions
The -asymmetry parameter for the Gamow-Teller decay of
Co was measured by polarizing the radioactive nuclei with the brute
force low-temperature nuclear-orientation method. The Co activity was
cooled down to milliKelvin temperatures in a He-He dilution
refrigerator in an external 13 T magnetic field. The particles were
observed by a 500 thick Si PIN diode operating at a temperature of
about 10 K in a magnetic field of 0.6 T. Extensive GEANT4 Monte-Carlo
simulations were performed to gain control over the systematic effects. Our
result, , is in agreement with
the Standard-Model value of , which includes recoil-order
corrections that were addressed for the first time for this isotope. Further,
it enables limits to be placed on possible tensor-type charged weak currents as
well as other physics beyond the Standard Model
Post COVID-19 Pandemic Increased Detection of Mycoplasma Pneumoniae in Adults Admitted to the Intensive Care
Background: Mycoplasma pneumoniae (M. pneumoniae) infections can progress to severe respiratory complications, necessitating intensive care treatment. Recent post COVID-19 pandemic surges underscore the need for timely diagnosis, given potential diagnostic method limitations. Methods: A retrospective case series analysis was conducted on M. pneumonia PCR-positive patients admitted to two Dutch secondary hospitalsâ ICUs between January 2023 and February 2024. Clinical presentations, treatments, outcomes, and mechanical ventilation data were assessed. Results: Seventeen ICU-admitted patients were identified, with a median age of 44 years, primarily due to hypoxia. Non-invasive ventilation was effective for most, while five required invasive mechanical ventilation. None of the patients required extracorporeal membrane oxygenation. No fatalities occurred. Post-PCR, treatment was adjusted to doxycycline or azithromycin; seven received steroid treatment. Discussion: Increased ICU admissions for M. pneumoniae infection were observed. Diverse clinical and radiological findings emphasize heightened clinical awareness. Early molecular diagnostics and tailored antibiotic regimens are crucial since beta-lactam antibiotics are ineffective. Conclusion: This study highlights the escalating challenge of severe M. pneumoniae infections in ICUs, necessitating a multifaceted approach involving accurate diagnostics, vigilant monitoring, and adaptable treatment strategies for optimal patient outcomes.</p
