Electrochemical processes in a wire-in-a-capillary bulk-loaded, nano-electrospray emitter

AbstractExperiments are described that illustrate solvent oxidation, emitter electrode corrosion, and analyte oxidation in positive ion mode nano-electrospray mass spectrometry using a wire-in-a-capillary, bulk-loaded nano-electrospray emitter geometry. Time-lapsed color photography of pH and metal specific indicator solutions within operating nano-electrospray emitters, as well as temporal changes in the ions observed in the nano-electrospray mass spectra, are used to probe these reactions, judge their magnitude, and study the time dependent changes in solution composition and gas-phase ion signal brought about as a result of these electrochemical reactions. Effect of dietary elaidic versus vaccenic acid on blood and liver lipids in the hamster

Male hamsters (30 per group) were fed five different semi-purified diets ad libitum. The diets, containing 30% of energy (en%) as fat, differed in their dietary fat composition (specified fatty acids exchanged at 10 en%) and were fed for 4 weeks. The five fatty acids compared in mixed triglycerides were elaidic acid (C18:1 9t), vaccenic acid (C18:1 11t), their cis-counterpart oleic acid (C18:1 9c), medium-chain fatty acids (MCFA; C8:0 and C10:0), and palmitic acid (C16:0). Compared with oleic acid, dietary MCFA and palmitic acid tended to increase blood cholesterol levels in the hamsters. The effect of elaidic and vaccenic acid on blood cholesterol did not differ from that of oleic acid. When elaidic acid and vaccenic acids were compared directly, the ratio of LDL/HDL-cholesterol in plasma was significantly higher in hamsters fed vaccenic acid than in those fed elaidic acid, and elaidic acid was incorporated at low levels, but more efficiently than vaccenic acid at the sn-2 position of platelet phospholipids. Biological consequences of this low incorporation are considered unlikely as levels of arachidonic acid (C20:4 n-6) and docosohexaenoic acid (C22:6 n-3) in the platelet phospholipids of all dietary groups did not differ. With respect to the effect on the LDL/HDL-cholesterol ratio, elaidic acid may be preferable to vaccenic acid. We conclude that this animal study does not provide evidence for the suggestion, based on epidemiological observations, that elaidic acid would be more detrimental to cardiovascular risk than vaccenic acid

Concurrency and Communication: Lessons from the SHIM Project

Describing parallel hardware and software is difficult, especially in an embedded setting. Five years ago, we started the shim project to address this challenge by developing a programming language for hardware/software systems. The resulting language describes asynchronously running processes that has the useful property of scheduling-independence: the i/o of a shim program is not affected by any scheduling choices. This paper presents a history of the shim project with a focus on the key things we have learned along the way

Physical and psychosocial health in pediatric uveitis patients

Background: To investigate the possible associations between childhood noninfectious uveitis and cardio-respiratory fitness, physical activity, health related quality of life and fatigue. Methods: Cross-sectional analysis of 23 patients with noninfectious uveitis, aged 8-18 years. BMI, exercise capacity, muscle strength and physical activity were measured. Health-related quality of life and fatigue were assessed. The results were compared to standardized values for age matched healthy children. Results: Twenty-three patients were included. Children with uveitis had a higher bodyweight and body mass index. Children with uveitis had lower cardio-respiratory fitness and they were less physically active, but they experienced a normal quality of life and normal fatigue. Parents of children with uveitis reported a lower quality of life and more fatigue for their children than parents of healthy children. Conclusion: Our study indicates that children with noninfectious uveitis are at risk of developing lower physical and psychosocial health

Automating Agential Reasoning: Proof-Calculi and Syntactic Decidability for STIT Logics

This work provides proof-search algorithms and automated counter-model extraction for a class of STIT logics. With this, we answer an open problem concerning syntactic decision procedures and cut-free calculi for STIT logics. A new class of cut-free complete labelled sequent calculi G3LdmL^m_n, for multi-agent STIT with at most n-many choices, is introduced. We refine the calculi G3LdmL^m_n through the use of propagation rules and demonstrate the admissibility of their structural rules, resulting in auxiliary calculi Ldm^m_nL. In the single-agent case, we show that the refined calculi Ldm^m_nL derive theorems within a restricted class of (forestlike) sequents, allowing us to provide proof-search algorithms that decide single-agent STIT logics. We prove that the proof-search algorithms are correct and terminate

Integrated systems for rapid point of care (PoC) blood cell analysis

Counting the different subpopulations of cells in a fingerprick of human blood is important for a number of clinical point-of-care (PoC) applications. It is a challenge to demonstrate the integration of sample preparation and detection techniques in a single platform. In this paper we demonstrate a generic microfluidic platform that combines sample processing and characterisation and enumeration in a single, integrated system. Results of microfluidic 3-part differential leukocyte (granulocyte, lymphocyte and monocyte) counts, together with erythrocyte and thrombocyte (platelet) counts, in human blood are shown and corroborated with results from hospital clinical laboratory analysis
