Evidence for a narrow baryonic state decaying to K0Sp and KOSp in deep inelastic scattering at HERA
A resonance search has been made in the K0Sp and KOSp invariant-mass spectrum measured with the ZEUS detector at HERA using an integrated luminosity of 121 pb−1. The search was performed in the central rapidity region of inclusive deep inelastic scattering at an ep centre-of-mass energy of 300–318 GeV for exchanged photon virtuality, Q2, above 1 GeV2. Recent results from fixed-target experiments give evidence for a narrow baryon resonance decaying to K+n and K0Sp, interpreted as a pentaquark. The results presented here support the existence of such state, with a mass of 1521.5±1.5(stat.)+2.8−1.7(syst.) MeV and a Gaussian width consistent with the experimental resolution of 2 MeV. The signal is visible at high Q2 and, for Q2>20 GeV2, contains 221±48 events. The probability of a similar signal anywhere in the range 1500–1560 MeV arising from fluctuations of the background is below 6×10−5
Search for QCD-instanton induced events in deep inelastic ep scattering at HERA
A search for QCD-instanton-induced events in deep inelastic ep scattering has been performed with the ZEUS detector at the HERA collider, using data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 38 pb-1. A kinematic range defined by cuts on the photon virtuality, Q2 > 120 GeV2, and on the Bjorken scaling variable, x > 10-3, has been investigated. The QCD-instanton induced events were modelled by the Monte Carlo generator QCDINS. A background-independent, conservative 95% confidence level upper limit for the instanton cross section of 26 pb is obtained, to be compared with the theoretically expected value of 8.9 pb
Forward jet production in deep inelastic ep scattering and low-x parton dynamics at HERA
Forward jet cross sections have been measured in neutral current deep inelastic scattering at low Bjorken-x with the ZEUS detector at HERA using an integrated luminosity of . Measurements are presented for inclusive forward jets as well as for forward jets accompanied by a dijet system. The explored phase space, with jet pseudorapidity up to 4.3 is expected to be particularly sensitive to the dynamics of QCD parton evolution at low x. The measurements are compared to fixed-order QCD calculations and to leading-order parton-shower Monte Carlo models
Substructure dependence of jet cross sections at HERA and determination of alpha_s
The substructure of jets has been studied in terms of the jet shape and subjet multiplicity and these quantities used to tag gluon- and quark-initiated jets. Cross sections are presented for gluon- and quark-tagged jets which exhibit the expected behaviour of the underlying parton dynamics. The value of alpha_s(M_Z) of alpha_s(M_Z) = 0.1176 +- 0.0009 (stat.) ^{+0.0009}_{-0.0026} (exp.) ^{+0.0091}_{-0.0072} (th.) was extracted from the measurements of jet shapes in deep inelastic scattering
Structure functions at large x
Structure function data together with other measurements from fixed-target
deep inelastic scattering and hadron-hadron collider experiments which
contribute to our knowledge of the parton density functions are reviewed. The
inclusive cross-section measurements of neutral and charged current
interactions at HERA are presented and their impact on the parton density
functions is discussed. Future prospects for an improved knowledge of the
parton density functions at large x are briefly mentioned.Comment: Invited talk given at the workshop on ``New Trends in HERA Physics

Momentum Spectra in the Current Region of the Breit Frame in Deep Inelastic Scattering at HERA
The production of charged particles has been measured in deep inelastic
scattering (DIS) with the ZEUS detector. The evolution of the moments of the
scaled momenta distributions in and has been investigated in the
current fragmentation region of the Breit frame. The results in the current
region are compared to data and QCD analytical calculations. The
results are consistent with the universality of single-particle spectra in DIS
and annihilation at high The results at low disagree with
analytical calculations based on the modified leading log approximation (MLLA)
and local parton hadron duality (LPHD).Comment: 3 pages. 1 postscript figure + 1 postscript preprint logo + 1 LaTeX

High Physics at HERA and Searches for New Particles
Preliminary results from H1 and ZEUS on Deep Inelastic Scattering (DIS) at
high momentum transfer squared are presented. Used are all available data accumulated by the H1 and ZEUS experiments between 1994 and 1997,
corresponding to integrated luminosities of and ,
respectively. The anomalies observed at high in the 1994 to 1996 data
still remain, though with less significance. Since this high domain
represents a new frontier in DIS, the same data are used to search for new
particles possessing direct couplings to lepton-quark pairs. Assuming that the
slight excess of events observed in Neutral Current DIS is due to a statistical
fluctuation, preliminary limits on the production of leptoquarks and of squarks
in R-parity violating MSSM are presented.Comment: 14 pages, 12 figures, uses iopart style files, contribution to the

Exclusive Double Diffractive Events: Menu for LHC
Exclusive double diffractive events (EDDE) are considered in the framework of
the Regge-eikonal approach and perturbative calculations for "hard"
subprocesses. Total and differential cross-sections for processes are calculated.Comment: 18 pages, Latex 2.09, 6 postscript figures, references are adde
