    Positive displacement compounding of a heavy duty diesel engine

    A helical screw type positive displacement (PD) compressor and expander was considered as an alternative to the turbocharger and the power turbine in the Cummins advanced turbocompound engine. The Institute of Gas Technology (IGT) completed the design, layout, and performance prediction of the PD machines. The results indicate that a screw compressor-expander system is feasible up to at least 750 HP, dry operation of the rotors is feasible, cost and producibility are uncertain, and the system will yield about 4% improvement in brake specific fuel consumption (BSFC) over the advanced turbocompound engine

    Computation of turbulent high speed mixing layers using a two-equation turbulence model

    A two-equation turbulence model was extended to be applicable for compressible flows. A compressibility correction based on modelling the dilational terms in the Reynolds stress equations were included in the model. The model is used in conjunction with the SPARK code for the computation of high speed mixing layers. The observed trend of decreasing growth rate with increasing convective Mach number in compressible mixing layers is well predicted by the model. The predictions agree well with the experimental data and the results from a compressible Reynolds stress model. The present model appears to be well suited for the study of compressible free shear flows. Preliminary results obtained for the reacting mixing layers are included

    An Introduction to Rule-based Modeling of Immune Receptor Signaling

    Cells process external and internal signals through chemical interactions. Cells that constitute the immune system (e.g., antigen presenting cell, T-cell, B-cell, mast cell) can have different functions (e.g., adaptive memory, inflammatory response) depending on the type and number of receptor molecules on the cell surface and the specific intracellular signaling pathways activated by those receptors. Explicitly modeling and simulating kinetic interactions between molecules allows us to pose questions about the dynamics of a signaling network under various conditions. However, the application of chemical kinetics to biochemical signaling systems has been limited by the complexity of the systems under consideration. Rule-based modeling (BioNetGen, Kappa, Simmune, PySB) is an approach to address this complexity. In this chapter, by application to the Fcε\varepsilonRI receptor system, we will explore the origins of complexity in macromolecular interactions, show how rule-based modeling can be used to address complexity, and demonstrate how to build a model in the BioNetGen framework.     Epidemiology of Arrhythmias in Children

    Unlike the adult population, arrhythmias occur less commonly in childhood. Only 5% of the emergency hospital admissions in the paediatric population is attributed to symptomatic arrhythmias. Majority of these tend to be accessory pathway mediated supraventricular tachyarrhythmias such as Wolff-Parkinson-White (WPW) syndrome, permanent junctional reciprocating tachycardia (PJRT) and Mahaim tachycardia. The non accessory pathway mediated supraventricular tachyarrhythmias commonly seen in children are junctional ectopic tachycardia (JET) and automatic ectopic atrial tachycardia (AET) and occur mostly in the post operative period after intracardiac repair for a structural heart defect. Ventricular tachycardia (VT) although uncommon, occurs in the paediatric age group in association with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM), long QT syndrome (LQTS) and Brugada syndrome. Occasionally, VT can also present symptomatically as incessant idiopathic infant ventricular tachycardia, right ventricular outflow tract tachycardia, benign VT, catecholaminic VT, idiopathic left ventricular tachycardia and in post cardiac surgical patients
