    The Teaching Style of English Teachers in Maintaining Students’ Motivation in Learning English at SMA Negeri 1 Enrekang

    Purposes: This research aimed at finding the teaching style by English teachers in teaching English to second grade students at SMAN 1 Enrekang, teaching styles that second grade students of SMAN 1 Enrekang favor, and whether the teaching style of the teachers of English maintain the motivation of the second grade students. Methodology: The sample consisted of two teachers and 30 students in two classes. In this research, the data were obtained through three kinds of instruments namely, observation checklist, questionnaire, and interview. Findings: The result showed that the teaching style of English teacher of XI IPA 3 was auditory while the English teacher of XI IPS 1 was visual auditory, both two classes of XI IPA 3 and XI IPS 1 favored kinesthetic visual teaching style, and the teachers could maintain the motivation of both two classes based on the result of mean score showed that it was positive. The result of questionnaire calculation of XI IPA 3 students was 94.5 with the mean was 3.94. The result of questionnaire calculation of XI IPS 1 students was 95.4 with the mean was 3.97. Implication: The results were considered to be positive as stated in Likert Scale

    Analyzing Students' Toefl Test Of English Education Deparment Of STKIP Muhammadiyah Enrekang

    This study aims to show students’ TOEFL score, sixth and eight semester  of English Education Department at  STKIP Muhammadiyah Enrekang. The research used descriptive design by quantitative approach. The sample is 40 students of English Education department. The research instrument used TOEFL  like test. Descriptive statistics showed the data analysis technique, mean and percentage. . For this study , students got problems in acquiring a TOEFL score with an average score 365 which was still at the basic  proficiency  category  (elementary).  From the data analyzing, the researcher found that  the highest problem faced by the studentsis is listening section where students got correct answers only 27%. The students got the lowest score is in the short dialogue with the percentage 35%. Then the structure and written expression,   students   got   average   score   lowest   in   the   aspect   of structure (completion) with  a  percentage  34%.  From  all  parts  of  the TOEFL test, none of the students got average score more than 50%

    Developing Students’ Motivation at MTS Negeri Papi Enrekang in Speaking English through Selected Games

    This research aimed at finding whether the students were motivated to speak English by using communication games and also finding out students’ part. The sample consisted of 30 students in participation in the classroom. In this reaserch the data were obtained through questionnaire (one and two). The result of the questionnaire’s description showed that the motivation of students was positive. It can be concluded that students are motivated to learn English through communication games. It was proved from the findings the of the students’ averange score that was 89.6 and the mean score was 4.48. The level of motivation was considered very high based on Likert Scale, and the result of the Questionnaire preference showed that  the students prefer jigsaw as communication games in speaking English with percentage, Jigsaw (56.7%), Giving Direction (33.3%), and Picture Pairs (10%)

    THE PROFILE OF ENGLISH TEACHERS’ PROFESSIONAL COMPETENCE AND STUDENTS’ ACHIEVEMENT AT SMA NEGERI 1 ENREKANG

    This  research  was  aimed  at  identifying  the  profile  of  English  teachers’ professional competence and students’ achievement at SMK Negeri 1 Makassar. The profile of English teachers’ professional competence was specified based on the two sub-competences in the National Standard of Education, in section 28, sub-section 3 point c. The researchers employed descriptive evaluation method. The population of this research was English teachers of SMK Negeri 1 Makassar. The sample was purposive sampling technique in which researcher chose the three certified English teachers as the sample. They were observed in the classroom while teaching and learning process and were also interviewed in relation to the implementation of professional competence in their teaching. The result showed for the first sub- competence, the teachers show their effort in selecting, determining, and organizing the materials by making their own module. In terms of the second sub-competence, all of the teachers have less effort in developing their professional competence. It can be concluded that the three English teachers still need more improvement. in terms of students’ achievement, the data from findings indicates that the highest students’ score is from teacher III. Meanwhile, the highest score of teacher professional competence among those teachers is teacher I. It indicates that many factors such as intelligence type, motivation, attitude, and condition of learning taking place that could affect the students’ achievement, not only the professional competence

    Academic Integrity: Preventing Students’ Plagiarism with TURNITIN

    The problem of plagiarism in writing scientific articles is intellectual dishonesty and received a lot of attention during this research, and relatively few students understand about plagiarism. A total of 16 respondents from final year students of the English education department involved in this research. The single group pretest-posttest comparative method was used to assess an action to determine the performance gap between the two time periods, before and after the intervention. Student papers were first submitted to measure their level of plagiarism without their knowledge. The results showed that Muhammadiyah Enrekang students practiced plagiarism on average 50.88%. Subsequently, the students were introduced by Turnitin's plagiarism detecting software and advised to examine their writing using software. The learning model intervention is then carried out with development training. The results showed that the average level of plagiarism among students decreased by 18.81%. In terms of students' perceptions of using Turnitin as a standard way of submitting their final assignments and to get feedback, the overall student reaction to the system used was positive. To avoid plagiarism, a more systematic approach should be taken by the University towards the problem of academic dishonesty, and in particular by students for the specific reasons why they practice plagiarism

The current research is expected to contribute to guiding students' scientific work by providing opportunities for them to correct the lack of understanding when they carry out their research assignments. This study uses qualitative and quantitative approaches (mixed method) which aims to investigate whether the use of peer reviews and lecturer corrective feedback has a positive effect on the performance of writing scientific articles for students as novice writers. Study participants included one class of a total of 18 students in the English Education Department. The Likert scale is used to measure the level of ability and benefits of peer review feedback and lecturer corrective feedback in writing scientific article skills based on student perceptions. The data revealed that the majority of the revisions made by students were the revision of the meaning surface (Meaning-level revisions) of 4258 (72.46%) for 4 times the revision of the draft article. Revisions to the level of change of meaning gradually result in an improvement of the articles as a whole before submitting the final draft of their article. In terms of students' perceptions of the application of peer review and corrective feedback in the learning process, students expressed a positive attitude. This study shows the importance of assessing the peer-review process in writing scientific paper

    This paper seeks to slightly explore the issue of cross-cultural understanding that might be beneficial for lecturers of the Muhammadiyah University of Enrekang who have won further study scholarships abroad as well as lecturers who are planning to continue their studies abroad. Understanding different cultures are extremely fundamental as a result of the absence of information culture assumes a job in the utilization of improper correspondence language. Elements of contrasts in an individual's way of life can likewise make individuals look prejudiced toward individuals with various societies. As a lecturer who will be assigned to study abroad, it is very important to "interpret" the behavior, attitudes, and communication styles of people from various cultures. Sometimes hinder a person to be able to complete studies abroad is not because of limited intelligence but because of limited ability to understand and accept the new culture contained in the destination country to learn. We hope that this paper can provide a little inspiration for prospective scholarship recipients of foreign scholarships to prepare themselves as well as possible including non-academic factors

    Enhancing Student Reading Skill through Strategy of Directed Reading Thinking Activity (DRTA)

    This research examines the effect of the DRTA strategy as an effort in enhancing the students' reading comprehension skills in class V SD 41 Enrekang. A research methodology is a quantitative method for classroom action research. This review focuses on student learning outcomes and processes. The study was conducted at Enrekang 41 Elementary School, Enrekang, with the subject of the fifth-grade students of Enrekang 41 Elementary School, Enrekang, consists of 21 students. The CAR is carried out in four stages: planning, implementing actions, observing, and reflecting. From the implementation obtained data collected by learning outcomes tests. Then the data is analyzed and processed quantitatively. The results of the study showed that Directed Reading Thinking Activity (DRTA) in the first cycle is in the less category (K), and after the second cycle action is carried out, there is an improvement in students’ scores and has reached the specified indicators. From the result, the researcher concludes that the students' reading comprehension skills in Indonesian subjects in class V SD 41 Enrekang, Enrekang Regency has an improvement after applying of the strategy of Directed Reading Thinking Activity (DRTA)

    The Implementation of Communicative Language Teaching (CLT) in Teaching English

    This research was aimed at finding out the way of the teacher in implementing of Communicative Language Teaching (CLT) in teaching English at class of SMPN 1 Enrekang, exploring the media, problems, and types of CLT activities that students prefer.  The population of this research was the teachers and the students of SMPN 1 Enrekang. The sample was three teachers and two classes. In this research, the data were obtained through three kinds of instruments namely, observation checklist, interview, and questionnaire. The result showed the ways of teacher in implementing of CLT were the teachers used principles of CLT methodology stated by Richards (2006:13). Moreover, the researcher found two other ways. Firstly, the teacher always tried to use creative ways/activities in applying Richards’s principles of CLT methodology in order not only to motivate and interest but also to decrease the boredom of students in learning English. Secondly, the teacher showed her sympathy, sensitivity, and understanding to their students’ needs and problems. Generally the problems encountered by the teachers were the students rarely communicated with others using English in daily life so they are lack of English proficiency. The media used by teacher were authentic materials, non-authentic material, listening exercises, internet, and computer based program. The result of questionnaire calculation is about 49.71. This result is in like categories as stated in Liker scale. Based on the data, the top rank of CLT activities that students prefer was task completion activities (100% of students)

    The Use of Indonesian Slang by Makassar Families in Their Daily Interaction

    This research was aimed at finding out the kind of Indonesian slang that is used by Makassar family in their daily interaction. Indonesia  slang’s called bahasa gaul (the 'social language'), where bahasa means 'language' and gaul means 'social', 'cool' or 'trendy'. Indonesian slang is predominantly used in everyday conversation, social milieus, among popular media and, to a certain extent, in teen publications or pop culture magazines. The researchers employed descriptive research method.. The researcher took the audio recordings, wrote the transcript of conversation, and  analysing the extract of conversation .The researchers took their own family as the subject of the research. The result showed most of Makassar family use Indonesian slang in their daily interaction. They are rare use Indonesian formal language when they speak with the others family member. There are two kinds of Indonesian slang which is always used by them, namely Jakarta slang and Makassarese slang
