    Prosodic cues to the perception of constituent boundaries

    This article is concerned with the relationship between the strength of prosodic boundaries in spoken utterances as perceived by untrained listeners and the phonetic cues melodic discontinuity, pause and declination reset. It is shown that boundary strength can be approached and measured as a perceptual variable in its own right. Clear relationships are found between perceptual boundary strength and both phonetic events and predicted prosodic boundary levels

    GoalGetter: football results, from teletext to speech

    This paper shows that a new Data-to-Speech system, called GoalGetter, could be created relatively easy from an existing one, the Dial-Your-Disc (DYD) system, despite the fact that the domain, the language and the speech output technique differ. It is shown that the original system is easily portable and that problems that arose after porting can receive generalized solutions so that the system as a whole is enhanced. The speech output technique used ( specific variant of the phrase concatenation technique) finds an optimum between the requirements of high quality output and flexibility. In addition, requirements for setting up a phrase database necessary for this technique are specified

    VIEWs: Visual interaction enriched windows

    We discuss how an augmented-reality platform can be used as a transparent interface to a windows environment. The resulting Visual Interaction Enriched Windows (VIEWs) intend to realize an evolutionary rather than a revolutionary transition from the classical desktop environment to an augmented-reality (AR) environment. Therefore, in VIEWs, windows applications can still be controlled by standard means, i.e., by using mouse and keyboard. In this way, acquired user skills with existing windows applications can still be exploited. The additional interaction styles that are offered by the AR platform, including two-handed interaction, pen input with in-place visual feedback, and transparency, may however be used to improve specific interactions, such as sketching and handwriting, that are more difficult to perform on a classical desktop. The user is free at all times to choose the interaction style that best suits his/her needs when performing specific operations. The VIEWs concept has been implemented as part of an existing AR tool for designers
