Lower semicontinuous functionals for Almgren's multiple valued functions

    Get PDF
We consider general integral functionals on the Sobolev spaces of multiple valued functions, introduced by Almgren. We characterize the semicontinuous ones and recover earlier results of Mattila as a particular case. Moreover, we answer positively to one of the questions raised by Mattila in the same paper.Comment: 19 pages; [v2] minor changes for publicatio

A software tool for the semi-automatic segmentation of architectural 3D models with semantic annotation and Web fruition

The thorough documentation of Cultural Heritage artifacts is a fundamental concern for management and preservation. In this context, the semantic segmentation and annotation of 3D models of historic buildings is an important modern topic. This work describes a software tool currently under development, for interactive and semi-automatic segmentation, characterization, and annotation of 3D models produced by photogrammetric surveys. The system includes some generic and well-known segmentation approaches, such as region growing and Locally Convex Connected Patches segmentation, but it also contains original code for specific semantic segmentation of parts of buildings, in particular straight stairs and circular-section columns. Furthermore, a method for automatic wall-surface characterization is devoted to rusticated-ashlar detection, in view of masonry-unit segmentation. The software is modular, so allowing easy expandability. It also has tools for data encoding into formats ready for model fruition by Web technologies. These results were partly obtained in collaboration with Corvallis SPA (Padua-Italy, http://www.corvallis.it)

This paper concerns the key aspects of the design of laminated glass structural elements subjected to axial forces of compression. An analysis of the Italian and European design-code frame is conducted with the analysis of experimental results reported in literature. The present study shown the existing of many problems in the implementation of these structural elements, such as a significant reduction of the theoretical value of compressive strength. Finally, we report the design process and the numerical analysis of laminated glass columns of a canopy prototype designed by the authors, starting by the definition of the loads and boundary conditions, the definition of the supporting structures, the processing of three-dimensional model to finite elements and the final geometry and mechanics of glass structures

    Urban Traffic Eco-driving: A Macroscopic Steady-State Analysis

    Get PDF
International audienceThe problem of traveling at maximum energy efficiency (Eco-Driving) is addressed for urban traffic networks at macroscopic level. The scope of this paper is the analysis of the steady-state behavior of the system, given certain boundary flows conditions fixed by traffic lights timings, and in presence of a traffic control policy based on variable speed limits. The formal study is carried out on a two-cells variable length model adapted to the urban setup from previous works on highway traffic. Informative traffic metrics, aimed at assessing traffic and vehicles performance in terms of traveling time, infrastructure utilization and energy consumption, are then defined and adapted to the new macroscopic traffic model. If congestion in a road section does not spill back or vanish, the system is stable and many different equilibrium points can be reached via variable speed limits. Efficient operation points and traffic conditions are identified as a trade-off between optimization of global traffic energy consumption, traveling time and infrastructure utilization

A MILP Framework to Solve the Sustainable System Optimum with Link MFD Functions

    Get PDF
Given the increasing consciousness toward the environmental footprint of mobility, accommodating environmental objectives in existing transport planning strategies is imperative for research and practice. In this paper, we use the link macroscopic fundamental diagram (MFD) model to develop optimal routing strategies that minimize total system emissions (TSE) in multiple origin-destination (OD) networks. Piecewise linear (PWL) functions are used to approximate MFD for individual links, and to define link-level emissions. Dynamic network constraints, non-vehicle holding constraints, and convex formulations of the PWL functions are considered. Thus, the system-optimum dynamic traffic assignment (SO-DTA) problem with environmental objectives is formulated as a mixed integer linear program (MILP). Finally, on a synthetic network, numerical examples demonstrate the performance of the proposed framework

DISCOVERING “PUNTO & VIRGOLA”. ANALYSIS OF A PEDAGOGICAL PATH FOR THE MANAGEMENT OF EMOTIONS AND BEHAVIORAL CONTROL WITH CHILDREN AGED 8 TO 11.

In the developmental process of children a fundamental role is assumed by emotional skills. Meta emotional knowledge and attitudes (Goleman, 2005) and the use of self-regulation strategies can be promoted through specific educational programs (Fedeli, 2013, 2008). This study describes an educational project aimed at learning emotional skills through games and targeted activities. The pedagogical intervention protocol envisages the intersection of the operational principles of Mindfulness (Saltzman, 2014, Dal Zovo, 2020), of the ABC path of emotions (Di Pietro, 2014) based on the Rational Emotional Behavioral Therapy model (Ellis, 1998). The contribution will present the project structure, the areas of pedagogical intervention and the efficacy study on the preliminary pre/post intervention data with an initial exploratory sample of five students with special educational needs, as well as the critical issues and possible areas for improvemen

Optimal Ecodriving Control: Energy-Efficient Driving of Road Vehicles as an Optimal Control Problem

    No full text
International audienceTransportation is responsible for a substantial fraction of worldwide energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions and is the largest sector after energy production. However, while emissions from other sectors are generally decreasing, those from transportation have increased since 1990. Reducing the impact of transportation is a task that is inherently associated with the improvement of energy efficiency, particularly for passenger cars that contribute to almost half of the whole sector

This paper concerns the design activity about laminated glass structures for the evaluation of criteria to optimize the design. This target is reached by using a preliminary study of the normative frame in national and international field. Forward by studying the bibliography on laminated glass structure. Application is on canopy designed by authors. Here are reported the step design procedures starting by definition of load, the restraints condition for structure element and a 3d model is produced by using a FEM method
