Asymptotic Bethe equations for open boundaries in planar AdS/CFT
We solve, by means of a nested coordinate Bethe ansatz, the open-boundaries
scattering theory describing the excitations of a free open string propagating
in , carrying large angular momentum , and ending on
a maximal giant graviton whose angular momentum is in the same plane. We thus
obtain the all-loop Bethe equations describing the spectrum, for finite but
large, of the energies of such strings, or equivalently, on the gauge side of
the AdS/CFT correspondence, the anomalous dimensions of certain operators built
using the epsilon tensor of SU(N). We also give the Bethe equations for strings
ending on a probe D7-brane, corresponding to meson-like operators in an
gauge theory with fundamental matter.Comment: 30 pages. v2: minor changes and discussion section added, J.Phys.A

Bound States of the q-Deformed AdS5 x S5 Superstring S-matrix
The investigation of the q deformation of the S-matrix for excitations on the
string world sheet in AdS5 x S5 is continued. We argue that due to the lack of
Lorentz invariance the situation is more subtle than in a relativistic theory
in that the nature of bound states depends on their momentum. At low enough
momentum |p|<E the bound states transform in the anti-symmetric representation
of the super-algebra symmetry and become the solitons of the Pohlmeyer reduced
theory in the relativistic limit. At a critical momentum |p|=E they become
marginally unstable, and at higher momenta the stable bound states are in the
symmetric representation and become the familiar magnons in the string limit as
q->1. This subtlety fixes a problem involving the consistency of crossing
symmetry with the relativistic limit found in earlier work. With mirror
kinematics, obtained after a double Wick rotation, the bound state structure is
simpler and there are no marginally unstable bound states.Comment: 25 page
The Bethe Ansatz for AdS5 x S5 Bound States
We reformulate the nested coordinate Bethe ansatz in terms of coproducts of
Yangian symmetry generators. This allows us to derive the nested Bethe
equations for the bound state string S-matrices. We find that they coincide
with the Bethe equations obtained from a fusion procedure. The bound state
number dependence in the Bethe equations appears through the parameters x^{\pm}
and the dressing phase only.Comment: typos correcte
Initial Oxygen Incorporation in the Prismatic Surfaces of Troilite FeS
We present a theoretical investigation of the prismatic (011̅0) surface of troilite in an oxidizing environment, which aims to elucidate the presence of oxygen detected experimentally in the pyrrhotite Fe1–xS nanoparticles. We find that atomic oxygen adsorbs in Fe–O–Fe bridging motifs, which are thermodynamically stable under ambient conditions. During the first oxidation steps, the formation of the S–O bond is less favored than Fe–O, suggesting that the sulfur oxides detected experimentally form only subsequently. We predict, moreover, that substitution of sulfur for oxygen can occur. The appearance of Fe–O–Fe–O–Fe bridging motifs due to successive adsorptions points toward a clustering growth of the oxidic units. In agreement with the experimental observations, the oxidation of troilite is exothermic, where the equilibrium between adsorption and substitution is influenced by the presence of Fe vacancies
Low-voltage polymer field-effect transistors for nonvolatile memories
We demonstrate organic nonvolatile memories based on transistors, made from spin-coated polymers, that have programming voltages of 15 V and good data retention capabilities. The low-voltage programmable ferroelectric field-effect transistors were obtained by an optimized ferroelectric polymer deposition method using cyclohexanone as a solvent from which films can be obtained that are thin, smooth and defect free. The data retention characteristics were measured for 3 h under constant read conditions. Extrapolation predicts that the data retention capability exceeds 10 years. Long-Ranged Orientational Order in Dipolar Fluids
Recently Groh and Dietrich claimed the thermodynamic state of a dipolar fluid
depends on the shape of the fluid's container. For example, a homogeneous fluid
in a short fat container would phase separate when transferred to a tall skinny
container of identical volume and temperature. Their calculation thus lacks a
thermodynamic limit. We show that removal of demagnetizing fields restores the
true, shape independent, thermodynamic limit. As a consequence, spontaneously
magnetized liquids display inhomogeneous magnetization textures.Comment: 3 pages, LaTex, no figures. Submitted as comment to PRL, May 199
High mobility n-channel organic field-effect transistors based on soluble C60 and C70 fullerene derivatives
We report on n-channel organic field-effect transistors (OFETs) based on the solution processable methanofullerenes [6,6]-phenyl-C61-butyric acid ester ([60]PCBM) and [6,6]-phenyl-C71-butyric acid methyl ester ([70]PCBM). Despite the fact that both derivatives form glassy films when processed from solution, their electron mobilities are high and on the order of 0.21 cm2/V s and 0.1 cm2/V s, for [60]PCBM and [70]PCBM, respectively. Although the derived mobility of [60]PCBM is comparable to the best values reported in the literature, the electron mobility of [70]PCBM is the highest value reported to date for any C70 based molecule. We note that this is the only report in which C60 and C70 methanofullerenes exhibit comparable electron mobilities. The present findings could have significant implications in the area of large-area organic electronics and organic photovoltaics where C60 derivatives have so far been the most widely used electron acceptor materials.
Electrical instabilities in organic semiconductors caused by trapped supercooled water
It is reported that the electrical instability known as bias stress is caused by the presence of trapped water in the organic layer. Experimental evidence as provided by the observation of an anomaly occurring systematically at around 200 K. This anomaly is observed in a variety of materials, independent of the deposition techniques and remarkably coincides with a known phase transition of supercooled water. Confined water does not crystallize at 273 K but forms a metastable liquid. This metastable water behaves electrically as a charge trap, which causes the instability. Below 200 K the water finally solidifies and the electrical traps disappear. (c) 2006 American Institute of Physics
Parameterization of oceanic whitecap fraction based on satellite observations
In this study, the utility of satellite-based white-cap fraction (W) data for the prediction of sea spray aerosol (SSA) emission rates is explored. More specifically, the study aims at evaluating how an account for natural variability of whitecaps in the W parameterization would affect SSA mass flux predictions when using a sea spray source function (SSSF) based on the discrete whitecap method. The starting point is a data set containing W data for 2006 together with matching wind speed U-10 and sea surface temperature (SST) T. Whitecap fraction W was estimated from observations of the ocean surface brightness temperature T-B by satellite-borne radiometers at two frequencies (10 and 37 GHz). A global-scale assessment of the data set yielded approximately quadratic correlation between W and U-10. A new global W(U-10) parameterization was developed and used to evaluate an intrinsic correlation between W and U-10 that could have been introduced while estimating W from T B. A regional-scale analysis over different seasons indicated significant differences of the coefficients of regional W(U-10) relationships. The effect of SST on W is explicitly accounted for in a new W(U-10, T) parameterization. The analysis of W values obtained with the new W(U-10) and W(U-10, T) parameterizations indicates that the influence of secondary factors on W is for the largest part embedded in the exponent of the wind speed dependence. In addition, the W(U-10, T) parameterization is able to partially model the spread (or variability) of the satellite-based W data. The satellite-based parameterization W(U-10, T) was applied in an SSSF to estimate the global SSA emission rate. The thus obtained SSA production rate for 2006 of 4.4 x 10(12) kg year(-1) is within previously reported estimates, however with distinctly different spatial distribution.Peer reviewe
Pain in Intellectually Disabled Children: Towards Evidence-Based Pharmacotherapy?
This critical opinion article deals with the challenges of finding the most effective pharmacotherapeutic options for the management of pain in intellectually disabled children and provides recommendations for clinical practice and research. Intellectual disability can be caused by a wide variety of underlying diseases and may be associated with congenital anomalies such as cardiac defects, small-bowel obstructions or limb abnormalities as well as with comorbidities such as scoliosis, gastro-esophageal reflux disease, spasticity, and epilepsy. These conditions themselves or any necessary surgical interventions are sources of pain. Epilepsy often requires chronic pharmacological treatment with antiepileptic drugs. These antiepileptic drugs can potentially cause drug–drug interactions with analgesic drugs. It is unfortunate that children with intellectual disabilities often cannot communicate pain to caregivers. Although these children are at high risk of experiencing pain, researchers nevertheless often have to exclude them from trials on pain management because of ethical considerations. We therefore make a plea for prescribers, researchers, patient organizations, pharmaceutical companies, and policy makers to study evidence-based, safe and effective pharmacotherapy in these children through properly designed studies. In the meantime, parents and clinicians must resort to validated pain assessment tools such as the revised FLACC scale
