    Open innovation in SMEs: Trends, motives and management challenges

    Although evidence for open innovation practices has been provided for large MNEs, they have not yet been analyzed systematically for SMEs. This paper presents the results of a survey among 605 Dutch innovating SMEs. The results show that SMEs are increasingly adapting open innovation practices. Moreover, they indicate a difference in the adaption to open innovation between manufacturing and services firms, and between larger and smaller SMEs. Larger SMEs adapting more quickly and in a more structured and professionalized way to open innovation than smaller ones. The survey furthermore shows that SMEs generally pursue an open innovation strategy to realize market-related objectives such as meeting customer demands, or keeping up with competitors. In addition, the results show that the most important barriers respondents face are related to the organizational and cultural differences when cooperating with other partners. Other serious barriers are administrative burdens, financing and knowledge transfer problems.

    An early-onset recessive cerebellar disorder with distal amyotrophy and, in two patients, gross myoclonia: A probable ataxia telangiectasia variant

    We report a family of 4 siblings from a non-consanguineous marriage, presenting with an early onset recessive cerebellar ataxia and progressive distal limb wasting. Ocular or other telangiectasias were absent. There were neither frequent infections nor immunodeficiencies. The two youngest patients exhibited an incapacitating myoclonus which abated markedly after 20 years. Late onset diabetes was demonstrated in 3 patients. Hypogonadism was not a feature and there was a prolonged survival in the 4 patients. The oldest sibling died of a pancreatic adenocarcinoma. α-Fetroprotein was elevated with normal carcinoembryonic antigen values in three patients. Cytogenetic analysis and radioresistant DNA synthesis was compatible with the diagnosis of ataxia-telangiectasia. This family probably represents a rare variant of ataxia-telangiectasia

    Classical Optimizers for Noisy Intermediate-Scale Quantum Devices

    We present a collection of optimizers tuned for usage on Noisy Intermediate-Scale Quantum (NISQ) devices. Optimizers have a range of applications in quantum computing, including the Variational Quantum Eigensolver (VQE) and Quantum Approximate Optimization (QAOA) algorithms. They are also used for calibration tasks, hyperparameter tuning, in machine learning, etc. We analyze the efficiency and effectiveness of different optimizers in a VQE case study. VQE is a hybrid algorithm, with a classical minimizer step driving the next evaluation on the quantum processor. While most results to date concentrated on tuning the quantum VQE circuit, we show that, in the presence of quantum noise, the classical minimizer step needs to be carefully chosen to obtain correct results. We explore state-of-the-art gradient-free optimizers capable of handling noisy, black-box, cost functions and stress-test them using a quantum circuit simulation environment with noise injection capabilities on individual gates. Our results indicate that specifically tuned optimizers are crucial to obtaining valid science results on NISQ hardware, and will likely remain necessary even for future fault tolerant circuits.Comment: 11 pages, 17 figure

    Aerosol delivery from spacers in wheezy infants: a daily life study

    The aims of this study were to assess and compare dose delivery and dose variability of pressurized metered dose inhalers (pMDI)/spacers in wheezy infants in daily life and to investigate factors influencing aerosol delivery. In an open randomized crossover study in 25 wheezy infants aged 5-26 months, a metal spacer (Nebuchamber), a detergent coated (DC) and a non-detergent coated (nonDC) plastic spacer (Babyhaler) were tested at home for 7 days each. Budesonide (200 microg b.i.d) was administered via a Nebuchamber or fluticasone (125 microg b.i.d) via a Babyhaler. Aerosol was trapped in filters, positioned between the spacer and face mask. Cooperation was scored on diary cards. Electrostatic charge (ESC) of the spacers was measured. Evaluations of the administration technique were made from video recordings. Median (range) dose delivery of the filters expressed as per cent (%) of nominal dose, was 34% (3-59), 23% (1-49), and 41% (12-55) for the Nebuchamber, nonDC-Babyhaler, and DC-Babyhaler respectively. Considerable dose variability was found, median (range) within-subject dose variability, expressed as coefficient of variation, for the Nebuchamber (49% (15-249)) was significantly higher when compared with both nonDC- (36% (12-325)) and DC-Babyhalers (27% (10-122)), for which dose variabilities were similar.     Victims of Bullying:Emotion Recognition and Understanding

    Introduction: Victims of bullying often show interpersonal problems, such as having less high-quality interpersonal relationships compared to non-involved individuals. Research suggests that interpersonal struggles are associated with diminished emotional intelligence and competence and can lead to mental health problems such as depression. Therefore, we examined emotion recognition abilities, empathic accuracy, and behavioral responses to emotions in bullying victims and non-involved individuals. Based on previous research, we expected victims to show diminished skills in all three domains. Methods: Adolescents (M(age)=17years; 67% female; no “other” gender participants) with (N=24) and without (N=21) a self-reported history of bullying victimization in high school completed a Virtual Reality facial emotion recognition task (ERT-VR), an empathic accuracy task (EAT) using videos of people recounting real-life autobiographical events, and a computer task in which they indicated their likely behavioral responses to facial emotions. Results: The two groups only significantly differed in recognizing emotions when taking their depression symptoms into account. Across emotions, victims had lower recognition accuracy than non-involved individuals. When examining emotion-specific differences, victims showed lower accuracy for neutral faces which they mainly mistook for angry faces. Conclusion: In contrast to expectations, adolescents with a high-school history of bullying victimization mostly showed similar emotional intelligence and competence skills as non-involved individuals. Nonetheless, we found some subtle differences regarding emotion recognition. Victims misjudged neutral as angry faces. This suggests a hostile attribution bias which might help explain victims’ interpersonal problems as well as their increased risk for mental health problems

    Blood clearance and tissue distribution of PEGylated and non-PEGylated gold nanorods after intravenous administration in rats\ud

    Aims: To develop and determine the safety of gold nanorods, whose aspect ratios can be tuned to obtain plasmon peaks between 650 and 850 nm, as contrast enhancing agents for diagnostic and therapeutic applications. Materials & methods: In this study we compared the blood clearance and tissue distribution of cetyl trimethyl ammonium bromide (CTAB)-capped and polyethylene glycol (PEG)-coated gold nanorods after intravenous injection in the tail vein of rats. The gold content in blood and various organs was measured quantitatively with inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry. Results & discussion: The CTAB-capped gold nanorods were almost immediately (<15 min) cleared from the blood circulation whereas the PEGylation of gold nanorods resulted in a prolonged blood circulation with a half-life time of 19 h and more wide spread tissue distribution. While for the CTAB-capped gold nanorods the tissue distribution was limited to liver, spleen and lung, the PEGylated gold nanorods also distributed to kidney, heart, thymus, brain and testes. PEGylation of the gold nanorods resulted in the spleen being the organ with the highest exposure, whereas for the non-PEGylated CTAB-capped gold nanorods the liver was the organ with the highest exposure, per gram of organ. Conclusion: The PEGylation of gold nanorods resulted in a prolongation of the blood clearance and the highest organ exposure in the spleen. In view of the time frame (up to 48 h) of the observed presence in blood circulation, PEGylated gold nanorods can be considered to be promising candidates for therapeutic and diagnostic imaging purpose

    “It’s my life and it’s now or never”:Transplant recipients empowered from a service-dominant logic perspective

    Patient well-being after an organ transplant is a major outcome determinant and survival ofthe graft is crucial. Before surgery, patients are already informed about how they caninfluence their prognosis, for example by adhering to treatment advice and remainingactive. Overall, effective selfmanagement of health-related issues is a major factor insuccessful long-term graft survival. As such, organ transplant recipients can be consideredas co-producers of their own health status. However, although keeping the graft in goodcondition is an important factor in the patient’s well-being, it is not enough. To have ameaningful life after a solid organ transplant, patients can use their improved health statusto once again enjoy time with family and friends, to travel and to return to work -in short toget back on track. Our assertion in this article is twofold. First, healthcare providers shouldlook beyond medical support in enhancing long-term well-being. Second, organ recipientsshould see themselves as creators of their own well-being. To justify our argument, we usethe theoretical perspective of service-dominant logic that states that patients are the truecreators of real value-in-use. Or as Bon Jovi sings, “It’s my life and it’s now or never.”<br/
