On Galois-Division Multiple Access Systems: Figures of Merit and Performance Evaluation
A new approach to multiple access based on finite field transforms is
investigated. These schemes, termed Galois-Division Multiple Access (GDMA),
offer compact bandwidth requirements. A new digital transform, the Finite Field
Hartley Transform (FFHT) requires to deal with fields of characteristic p, p
\neq 2. A binary-to-p-ary (p \neq 2) mapping based on the opportunistic
secondary channel is introduced. This allows the use of GDMA in conjunction

String dynamics in cosmological and black hole backgrounds: The null string expansion
We study the classical dynamics of a bosonic string in the --dimensional
flat Friedmann--Robertson--Walker and Schwarzschild backgrounds. We make a
perturbative development in the string coordinates around a {\it null} string
configuration; the background geometry is taken into account exactly. In the
cosmological case we uncouple and solve the first order fluctuations; the
string time evolution with the conformal gauge world-sheet --coordinate
is given by , where
are given by Eqs.\ (3.15), and is the exponent of the conformal factor
in the Friedmann--Robertson--Walker metric, i.e. . The string
proper size, at first order in the fluctuations, grows like the conformal
factor and the string energy--momentum tensor corresponds to that of
a null fluid. For a string in the black hole background, we study the planar
case, but keep the dimensionality of the spacetime generic. In the null
string expansion, the radial, azimuthal, and time coordinates are

{\it generic} approach to the Schwarzschild singularity at . First and
higher order string perturbations contribute with higher powers of . The
integrated string energy-momentum tensor corresponds to that of a null fluid in

Jet directions in Seyfert galaxies: B and I imaging data
We present the results of broad-band B and I imaging observations for a
sample of 88 Seyfert galaxies (29 Seyfert 1's and 59 Seyfert 2's), selected
from a mostly isotropic property, the flux at 60m. We also present the B
and I imaging results for an additional sample of 20 Seyfert galaxies (7
Seyfert 1's and 13 Seyfert 2's), selected from the literature and known to have
extended radio emission. The I band images are fitted with ellipses to
determine the position angle and ellipticity of the host galaxy major axis.
This information will be used in a future paper, combined with information from
radio observations, to study the orientation of radio jets relative to the
plane of their host galaxies (Kinney et al. 2000). Here we present surface
brightness profiles and magnitudes in the B and I bands, as well as mean

We comment on a recent letter by L. C. de Albuquerque and M. M.
Leite (J. Phys. A: Math. Gen. 34 (2001) L327-L332), in which results to
second order in were presented for the critical
exponents , and
of d-dimensional systems at m-axial Lifshitz points.
We point out that their results are at variance with ours. The discrepancy is
due to their incorrect computation of momentum-space integrals. Their
speculation that the field-theoretic renormalization group approach, if
performed in position space, might give results different from when it is
