Anisotropic superconducting properties of aligned MgB2 crystallites
Samples of aligned MgB2 crystallites have been prepared, allowing for the
first time the direct identification of an upper critical field anisotropy
Hc2^{ab}/Hc2^{c}= xi_{ab}/xi_{c} ~ 1.73; with xi_{o,ab} ~ 70 A, xi_{o,c} ~ 40
A, and a mass anisotropy ratio m_{ab}/m_{c} ~ 0.3. A ferromagnetic background
signal was identified, possibly related to the raw materials purity.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures; Revised version to appear in Phys. Rev. Let
Irreversible magnetization under rotating fields and lock-in effect on ErBa_2Cu_3O_7 single crystal with columnar defects
We have measured the irreversible magnetization M_i of an ErBa_2Cu_3O_7
single crystal with columnar defects (CD), using a technique based on sample
rotation under a fixed magnetic field H. This method is valid for samples whose
magnetization vector remains perpendicular to the sample surface over a wide
angle range - which is the case for platelets and thin films - and presents
several advantages over measurements of M_L(H) loops at fixed angles. The
resulting M_i(\Theta) curves for several temperatures show a peak in the CD
direction at high fields. At lower fields, a very well defined plateau
indicative of the vortex lock-in to the CD develops. The H dependence of the
lock-in angle \phi_L follows the H^{-1} theoretical prediction, while the
temperature dependence is in agreement with entropic smearing effects
corresponding to short range vortex-defects interactions.Comment: 7 pages, 6 figures, to be published in Phys. Rev.
The protoMIRAX Hard X-ray Imaging Balloon Experiment
The protoMIRAX hard X-ray imaging telescope is a balloon-borne experiment
developed as a pathfinder for the MIRAX satellite mission. The experiment
consists essentially in a coded-aperture hard X-ray (30-200 keV) imager with a
square array (1313) of 2mm-thick planar CZT detectors with a total area
of 169 cm. The total, fully-coded field-of-view is and the angular resolution is 143'. In this paper we
describe the protoMIRAX instrument and all the subsystems of its balloon
gondola, and we show simulated results of the instrument performance. The main
objective of protoMIRAX is to carry out imaging spectroscopy of selected bright
sources to demonstrate the performance of a prototype of the MIRAX hard X-ray
imager. Detailed background and imaging simulations have been performed for
protoMIRAX balloon flights. The 3 sensitivity for the 30-200 keV range
is ~1.9 10 photons cm s for an integration time
of 8 hs at an atmospheric depth of 2.7 g cm and an average zenith angle
of 30. We have developed an attitude control system for the balloon
gondola and new data handling and ground systems that also include prototypes
for the MIRAX satellite. We present the results of Monte Carlo simulations of
the camera response at balloon altitudes, showing the expected background level
and the detailed sensitivity of protoMIRAX. We also present the results of
imaging simulations of the Crab region. The results show that protoMIRAX is
capable of making spectral and imaging observations of bright hard X-ray source
fields. Furthermore, the balloon observations will carry out very important
tests and demonstrations of MIRAX hardware and software in a near space
environment.Comment: 9 pages, 13 figures, accepted for publication in Astronomy &

Improving Sequential Determinantal Point Processes for Supervised Video Summarization
It is now much easier than ever before to produce videos. While the
ubiquitous video data is a great source for information discovery and
extraction, the computational challenges are unparalleled. Automatically
summarizing the videos has become a substantial need for browsing, searching,
and indexing visual content. This paper is in the vein of supervised video
summarization using sequential determinantal point process (SeqDPP), which
models diversity by a probabilistic distribution. We improve this model in two
folds. In terms of learning, we propose a large-margin algorithm to address the
exposure bias problem in SeqDPP. In terms of modeling, we design a new
probabilistic distribution such that, when it is integrated into SeqDPP, the
resulting model accepts user input about the expected length of the summary.
Moreover, we also significantly extend a popular video summarization dataset by
1) more egocentric videos, 2) dense user annotations, and 3) a refined
evaluation scheme. We conduct extensive experiments on this dataset (about 60
hours of videos in total) and compare our approach to several competitive
baselines
