Looking at Vector Space and Language Models for IR using Density Matrices
In this work, we conduct a joint analysis of both Vector Space and Language
Models for IR using the mathematical framework of Quantum Theory. We shed light
on how both models allocate the space of density matrices. A density matrix is
shown to be a general representational tool capable of leveraging capabilities
of both VSM and LM representations thus paving the way for a new generation of
retrieval models. We analyze the possible implications suggested by our

Calculation Of Secondary Particles In Atmosphere And Hadronic Interactions
Calculation of secondary particles produced by the interaction of cosmic rays
with the nuclei of Earth's atmosphere pose important requirements to particle
production models. Here we summarize the important features of hadronic
simulations, stressing the importance of the so called ``microscopic''
approach, making explicit reference to the case of the FLUKA code. Some

Meaning-focused and Quantum-inspired Information Retrieval
In recent years, quantum-based methods have promisingly integrated the
traditional procedures in information retrieval (IR) and natural language
processing (NLP). Inspired by our research on the identification and
application of quantum structures in cognition, more specifically our work on
the representation of concepts and their combinations, we put forward a
'quantum meaning based' framework for structured query retrieval in text
corpora and standardized testing corpora. This scheme for IR rests on
considering as basic notions, (i) 'entities of meaning', e.g., concepts and
their combinations and (ii) traces of such entities of meaning, which is how
documents are considered in this approach. The meaning content of these
'entities of meaning' is reconstructed by solving an 'inverse problem' in the
quantum formalism, consisting of reconstructing the full states of the entities
of meaning from their collapsed states identified as traces in relevant
documents. The advantages with respect to traditional approaches, such as
Latent Semantic Analysis (LSA), are discussed by means of concrete examples.Comment: 11 page
RAW AND READY-TO-EAT VEGETABLES: MICROBIAL SAFETY EVALUATION
The aim of this study was to supply to the shortage of information in microbial criteria in ready-to-eat vegetable products. This paper reports data obtained by analysis carried out with specific Real Time PCR methods to check the presence of pathogenic bacteria (Salmonella spp., Listeria monocytogenes, Escherichia coli O157:H7, Campylobacter spp. and Yersinia enterocolitica) in fresh and ready-to-eat green salads. 9.8% of samples positive for at least one pathogen by RealTime PCR, but no viable microorganism was isolated by ISO methods
Molecular characterization of Pseudomonas fluorescens isolates involved in the Italian "blue mozzarella" event.
Between June and September 2010, widespread Italian consumer reports of unusual blue spoilage on fresh dairy products were publicized, resulting in the so-called blue mozzarella event. An inordinately high number of samples from mozzarella and whey cheese products of Italian and German production subsequently tested positive for Pseudomonas fluorescens. The aim of this study was to verify whether a selected P. fluorescens strain was responsible for this apparently unusual event. Molecular characterization of 181 isolated P. fluorescens strains was conducted using a newly optimized pulsed-field gel electrophoresis protocol. Although a high number of pulsotypes was found (132), only four pulsotypes were associated with more than one production plant, and only one German isolate had the same pulsotype as was detected in two Italian plants. This is the only evidence of possible cross-contamination among cheeses from the two countries. The overall results did not support the spread of contamination from German to Italian plants or the presence of one environmental strain that spread in both countries
Isotopic Composition of Light Nuclei in Cosmic Rays: Results from AMS-01
The variety of isotopes in cosmic rays allows us to study different aspects
of the processes that cosmic rays undergo between the time they are produced
and the time of their arrival in the heliosphere. In this paper we present
measurements of the isotopic ratios 2H/4He, 3He/4He, 6Li/7Li, 7Be/(9Be+10Be)
and 10B/11B in the range 0.2-1.4 GeV of kinetic energy per nucleon. The
measurements are based on the data collected by the Alpha Magnetic
Spectrometer, AMS-01, during the STS-91 flight in 1998 June.Comment: To appear in ApJ. 12 pages, 11 figures, 6 table
A Precise Measurement of the Muon Neutrino-Nucleon Inclusive Charged Current Cross-Section off an Isoscalar Target in the Energy Range 2.5 < E_\nu < 40 GeV by NOMAD
We present a measurement of the muon neutrino-nucleon inclusive charged
current cross-section, off an isoscalar target, in the neutrino energy range
GeV. The significance of this measurement is its
precision, % in GeV, and % in GeV regions, where significant uncertainties in previous
experiments still exist, and its importance to the current and proposed long
baseline neutrino oscillation experiments.Comment: 14 pages, 3 figures, submitted to Phys.Lett.
A Measurement of Coherent Neutral Pion Production in Neutrino Neutral Current Interactions in NOMAD
We present a study of exclusive neutral pion production in neutrino-nucleus
Neutral Current interactions using data from the NOMAD experiment at the CERN
SPS. The data correspond to muon-neutrino Charged Current
interactions in the energy range GeV. Neutrino
events with only one visible in the final state are expected to result
from two Neutral Current processes: coherent production, {\boldmath
} and single production in
neutrino-nucleon scattering. The signature of coherent production is an
emergent almost collinear with the incident neutrino while 's
produced in neutrino-nucleon deep inelastic scattering have larger transverse
momenta. In this analysis all relevant backgrounds to the coherent
production signal are measured using data themselves. Having determined the
backgrounds, and using the Rein-Sehgal model for the coherent
production to compute the detection efficiency, we obtain {\boldmath } corrected coherent- events with GeV. We measure {\boldmath }.
This is the most precise measurement of the coherent production to

Production properties of K*(892) vector mesons and their spin alignment as measured in the NOMAD experiment
First measurements of K*(892) mesons production properties and their spin
alignment in nu_mu charged current (CC) and neutral current (NC) interactions
are presented. The analysis of the full data sample of the NOMAD experiment is
performed in different kinematic regions. For K*+ and K*- mesons produced in
nu_mu CC interactions and decaying into K0 pi+/- we have found the following
yields per event: (2.6 +/- 0.2 (stat.) +/- 0.2 (syst.))% and (1.6 +/- 0.1
(stat.) +/- 0.1 (syst.))% respectively, while for the K*+ and K*- mesons
produced in nu NC interactions the corresponding yields per event are: (2.5 +/-
0.3 (stat.) +/- 0.3 (syst.))% and (1.0 +/- 0.3 (stat.) +/- 0.2 (syst.))%. The
results obtained for the rho00 parameter, 0.40 +/- 0.06 (stat) +/- 0.03 (syst)
and 0.28 +/- 0.07 (stat) +/- 0.03 (syst) for K*+ and K*- produced in nu_mu CC
interactions, are compared to theoretical predictions tuned on LEP measurements
in e+e- annihilation at the Z0 pole. For K*+ mesons produced in nu NC
interactions the measured rho00 parameter is 0.66 +/- 0.10 (stat) +/- 0.05
(syst).Comment: 20 p
Search for the exotic resonance in the NOMAD experiment
A search for exotic Theta baryon via Theta -> proton +Ks decay mode in the
NOMAD muon neutrino DIS data is reported. The special background generation
procedure was developed. The proton identification criteria are tuned to
maximize the sensitivity to the Theta signal as a function of xF which allows
to study the Theta production mechanism. We do not observe any evidence for the
Theta state in the NOMAD data. We provide an upper limit on Theta production
rate at 90% CL as 2.13 per 1000 of neutrino interactions.Comment: Accepted to European Physics Journal
