The Social Cost of Dredging: The Bahia Blanca Estuary Case
The Bahia Blanca Estuary System constitutes an ecosystem unique in the world by its physical, geographic and biological characteristics. In the frame of a major investment project related with natural gas provision, a dredging process has been planned and its execution results imminent. However, the analysis of socioeconomic effects of this dredging process has not been performed up to now. In this context, our objective is to estimate social costs and benefits of the dredging process related with the gas plant project mainly derived from the loss of the nursery services of the estuary and the loss of the jobs associated with fishing activities. Our results indicate that socioeconomic cost of the dredging related with the project is between US 6.5 million depending on how the displaced labor force can be reallocated.Fil: Zilio, Mariana Ines. Glucose is a key driver for GLUT1-mediated nanoparticles internalization in breast cancer cells
The mesenchymal state in cancer is usually associated with poor prognosis due to the metastatic predisposition and the hyper-activated metabolism. Exploiting cell glucose metabolism we propose a new method to detect mesenchymal-like cancer cells. We demonstrate that the uptake of glucose-coated magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) by mesenchymal-like cells remains constant when the glucose in the medium is increased from low (5.5 mM) to high (25 mM) concentration, while the MNPs uptake by epithelial-like cells is significantly reduced. These findings reveal that the glucose-shell of MNPs plays a major role in recognition of cells with high-metabolic activity. By selectively blocking the glucose transporter 1 channels we showed its involvement in the internalization process of glucose-coated MNPs. Our results suggest that glucose-coated MNPs can be used for metabolic-based assays aimed at detecting cancer cells and that can be used to selectively target cancer cells taking advantage, for instance, of the magnetic-thermotherapy
Surgical and Interventional Management of Complications Caused by Pancreatitis
Acute pancreatitis has a broad clinical spectrum: from mild, self-limited disease to fulminant illness resulting in multi-organ failure leading to a prolonged clinical course with up to 30% mortality in case of infected necrosis. Management of local complications such as pseudocysts and walled-off necrosis may vary from clinical observation to interventional treatment procedures. Gram negative bacteria infection may develop in up to one-third of patients with pancreatic necrosis leading to a clinical deterioration with the onset of the systemic inflammatory response syndrome and organ failure. When feasible, an interventional treatment is indicated. Percutaneous or endoscopic drainage approach are the first choices. A combination of minimally invasive techniques (step-up approach) is possible in patients with large or multiple collections. Open surgical treatment has been revised both in the timing and in the operating modalities in the last decades. Since 1990s, the surgical treatment of infected necrosis shifted to a more conservative approach. Disruption of the main pancreatic duct is present in up to 50% of patients with pancreatic fluid collections. According to the location along the Wirsung, treatment may vary from percutaneous drainage, endoscopic retrograde pancreatography with sphincterectomy or stenting to traditional surgical procedures. Patients may suffer from vascular complications in up to 23% of cases. Tissue disruption provoked by lipolytic and proteolytic enzymes, iatrogenic complications during operative procedures, splenic vein thrombosis, and pseudoaneurysms are the pathophysiological determinants of bleeding. Interventional radiology is the first line treatment and when it fails or is not possible, an urgent surgical approach should be adopted. Chylous ascites, biliary strictures and duodenal stenosis are complications that, although uncommon and transient, may have different treatment modalities from non-operative, endoscopic to open surgery
Activated zinc transporter ZIP7 as an indicator of anti-hormone resistance in breast cancer
ZIP7, a member of the ZIP family of zinc importers, resides on the endoplasmic reticulum membrane and transports zinc from intracellular stores to the cytoplasm after activation by CK2 phosphorylation on two serine residues (S275 and S276). ZIP7 is known to be required for the growth of anti-hormone resistant breast cancer models, especially acquired tamoxifen-resistant cells developed from MCF-7. Using our new pS275S276ZIP7 antibody which only recognises activated ZIP7 (pZIP7), we have demonstrated that the hyperactivation of ZIP7 is prevalent in tamoxifen-resistant breast cancer cells. This evidence suggests that pZIP7 might have potential as a biomarker of acquired resistance to such anti-hormones in breast cancer, a current unmet clinical need. In this regard, we have also developed a new immunohistochemical assay for pZIP7 which allowed pZIP7 to be tested on a small clinical series of breast cancer tissues confirming its prevalence in such tumours and relationship to a variety of clinicopathological parameters and biomarkers previously associated with endocrine resistant phenotypes, notably increased activated MAPK signalling, expression of ErbB2, CD71 and the proto-oncogene c-Fos, as well as with increased tumour grade
Can scenario-planning support community-based natural resource management? Experiences from three countries in latin america
Community Based Natural Resource Management (CBNRM) is a concept critical to managing socio-ecological systems, but whose implementation needs strengthening. Scenario-planning is one approach that may offer benefits relevant to CBNRM, but whose potential is not yet well understood. We therefore designed, trialled and evaluated a scenario-planning method intended to support CBNRM at three cases, located in Colombia, Mexico and Argentina. Implementing scenario-planning was judged as worthwhile in all three cases, although aspects of it could be challenging to facilitate. The benefits generated were relevant to strengthening CBNRM: encouraging the participation of local people and using their knowledge; enhanced consideration and adaption of future change; and supporting the development of systems thinking. Tracing exactly when and how these benefits arise is challenging, but two elements of the method seemed particularly useful. Firstly, using a systematic approach to discuss how drivers of change may affect local socio-ecological systems helped to foster systems thinking and identify connections between issues. Secondly, explicitly focusing on how to use and respond to scenarios helped identify specific practical activities ('response options') that would support CBNRM despite the pressures of future change. Discussions about response options also highlighted the need for support by other actors (e.g. policy groups): this raises the question of when and how other actors and other sources of knowledge should be involved in scenario-planning, so as to encourage their buy-in to actions identified by the process. We suggest other CBNRM initiatives may benefit from adapting and applying scenario-planning. However, these initiatives should be carefully monitored since further research is required to understand how and when scenario-planning methods may produce benefits, and their strengths and weaknesses versus other methods
A laminite subclínica acometeu primariamente as vacas do rebanho, considerando a etiologia multifatorial desta afecção, ocorrência e distribuição das enfermidades podais diagnosticadas
