    Generative Modeling in Structural-Hankel Domain for Color Image Inpainting

    In recent years, some researchers focused on using a single image to obtain a large number of samples through multi-scale features. This study intends to a brand-new idea that requires only ten or even fewer samples to construct the low-rank structural-Hankel matrices-assisted score-based generative model (SHGM) for color image inpainting task. During the prior learning process, a certain amount of internal-middle patches are firstly extracted from several images and then the structural-Hankel matrices are constructed from these patches. To better apply the score-based generative model to learn the internal statistical distribution within patches, the large-scale Hankel matrices are finally folded into the higher dimensional tensors for prior learning. During the iterative inpainting process, SHGM views the inpainting problem as a conditional generation procedure in low-rank environment. As a result, the intermediate restored image is acquired by alternatively performing the stochastic differential equation solver, alternating direction method of multipliers, and data consistency steps. Experimental results demonstrated the remarkable performance and diversity of SHGM.Comment: 11 pages, 10 figure

    Efficacy of repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation at different sites for peripheral facial paralysis: a prospective cohort study

    BackgroundThere are very few studies on transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) therapy for facial paralysis and no studies comparing the efficacy of central and peripheral TMS in the treatment of peripheral facial paralysis (PFP).PurposeTo observe the therapeutic effect and security of central and peripheral repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) on PFP.MethodsPatients with unilateral onset of peripheral facial paralysis within 1 month were prospectively recruited, 97 patients with PFP were divided into the peripheral group, central group, and control group. The control group was given common treatment (drug therapy and acupuncture), and the peripheral and central groups received rTMS in addition to conventional treatment. After 2 weeks of treatment, the House-Brackmann (HB) grading scale, Sunnybrook facial grading system (SFGS), and modified Portmann scale (MPS) were used to evaluate the facial muscle function of patients in the three groups.ResultAfter 2 weeks of rTMS treatment, the HBGS/SFGS/MPS scores of the three groups were significantly better than before (p < 0.05), and the mean change values of HBGS, SFGS, and MPS scores were significantly higher in participants in Peripheral Group (p < 0.001; p < 0.001; p = 0.003; respectively) and Central Group (p = 0.004; p = 0.003; p = 0.009; respectively) than in Control Group. But the mean change values of HBGS, SFGS, and MPS scores showed no significant differences in participants in the Peripheral Group than in the Central Group (p = 0.254; p = 0.139; p = 0.736; respectively) after 2 weeks of treatment (p > 0.05).ConclusionOur study shows that rTMS can be a safe and effective adjuvant therapy for patients with PFP. Preliminary studies have shown that both peripheral and central stimulation can effectively improve facial nerve function, but there is no significant difference in the efficacy of the two sites

    Investigating causal relationships between the gut microbiota and allergic diseases: A mendelian randomization study

    Observational studies revealed altered gut microbial composition in patients with allergic diseases, which illustrated a strong association between the gut microbiome and the risk of allergies. However, whether such associations reflect causality remains to be well-documented. Two-sample mendelian randomization (2SMR) was performed to estimate the potential causal effect between the gut microbiota and the risk of allergic diseases. 3, 12, and 16 SNPs at the species, genus, and family levels respectively of 15 microbiome features were obtained as the genetic instruments of the exposure dataset from a previous study. GWAS summary data of a total of 17 independent studies related to allergic diseases were collected from the IEU GWAS database for the outcome dataset. Significant causal relationships were obtained between gut microbiome features including Ruminococcaceae, Eggerthella, Bifidobacterium, Faecalibacterium, and Bacteroides and the risk of allergic diseases. Furthermore, our results also pointed out a number of putative associations between the gut microbiome and allergic diseases. Taken together, this study was the first study using the approach of 2SMR to elucidate the association between gut microbiome and allergic diseases

    Robust estimation of bacterial cell count from optical density

    Optical density (OD) is widely used to estimate the density of cells in liquid culture, but cannot be compared between instruments without a standardized calibration protocol and is challenging to relate to actual cell count. We address this with an interlaboratory study comparing three simple, low-cost, and highly accessible OD calibration protocols across 244 laboratories, applied to eight strains of constitutive GFP-expressing E. coli. Based on our results, we recommend calibrating OD to estimated cell count using serial dilution of silica microspheres, which produces highly precise calibration (95.5% of residuals <1.2-fold), is easily assessed for quality control, also assesses instrument effective linear range, and can be combined with fluorescence calibration to obtain units of Molecules of Equivalent Fluorescein (MEFL) per cell, allowing direct comparison and data fusion with flow cytometry measurements: in our study, fluorescence per cell measurements showed only a 1.07-fold mean difference between plate reader and flow cytometry data

    Survival predictors associated with signet ring cell carcinoma of the esophagus (SRCCE): A population-based retrospective cohort study.

    Signet ring cell carcinoma of the esophagus (SRCCE) is an uncommon tumor associated with significant morbidity and mortality. There is still no consensus regarding cut-off values for tumor size, age and optimal treatment for SRCCE. Thus, we elucidated the current survival outcomes of patients with SRCCE and analyzed factors associated with prognosis.A retrospective cohort study based on the SEER (The Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results) program database was conducted. We identified 537 patients (461 men and 76 women) newly diagnosed with SRCCE between January 2004 and December 2014. A multivariate Cox proportional hazards model was utilized to measure the mortality-associated risk factors in patients with SRCCE after adjusting for various variables.The 1-, 2- and 5-year disease-specific mortalities (DSM) were 51.6%, 67.6%, and 78.4%, respectively, and the median survival time was 12.0 months. The factors correlated with mortality hazard were marital status (unmarried versus married, Hazard Ratio (HR) = 1.443), tumor size (≥ 5 cm versus < 5 cm, HR = 1.444), tumor grade (high grade versus low grade, HR = 3.001), condition of primary tumor (T4 versus T1, HR = 2.178), regional lymph node metastasis (N1 versus N0, HR = 1.739), further metastasis (M1 versus M0, HR = 1.951) and chemotherapy (receiving chemotherapy versus no chemotherapy, HR = 0.464).The contemporary 5-year DSM was 78.4%. Being unmarried, having a tumor size ≥ 5 cm, a high tumor grade, a score of T4 for tumor invasion of adjacent organs, a score of N1 for regional lymph node metastasis, a score of M1 for distant metastasis and no chemotherapy were independent predictors of high DSM

    Design and Analysis of a Moment of Inertia Adjustment Device

    The vibration frequency characteristics of a rotor system are directly related to its moment of inertia. In this paper, a moment of inertia adjustment device is proposed to adjust the frequency characteristics of a rotor system and better reduce vibration by changing the moment of inertia. First, a mathematical model of the moment of inertia and the temperature field are established. A finite element simulation model of the electromagnetic field of the electromagnetic control unit in the device is established. The influence of current and air gap on the electromagnetic forces is discussed. Then, the validity of the finite element simulation for the electromagnetic control unit is verified using experimental results. In addition, the variations in the displacement and force of the moving mass and the moment of inertia of the device with speed are analyzed. The results show that the proposed moment of inertia adjustment device can be used to significantly adjust the moment of inertia, which provides a reference for better controlling vibrations in rotor systems. Finally, a finite element simulation model for an electromagnetic field analysis of the electromagnetic control unit in the device is established. The results show that the maximum temperature of the electromagnetic control device is 332 K in 60 min, which is in accordance with the requirements
